Straps and bracelets: a practical guide

Changing a strap is the cheapest way to change a watch, and the only modification that alters nothing about the watch itself. A steel sports watch on a bracelet, on a rubber strap and on a nylon single-pass strap is three different objects in every respect but the mechanism inside.
It also matters more than aesthetics. The strap decides how the case is held against your wrist, whether the watch survives being sweated on, and what happens when a spring bar fails. That last one is not hypothetical: the strap and its two bars are the only parts of a watch whose failure costs you the whole watch.
Bracelet types and what they do
A metal bracelet spreads the watch's weight around the whole wrist rather than hanging it from one point, which is why heavy watches wear best on one. The main families are worth knowing by name, since those names are used generically.
- Oyster-style three-link: a wide flat center link between two narrower outers. Sporty, robust, easy to clean.
- Jubilee-style five-link: five rows with smaller polished center links, introduced by Rolex on the Datejust in 1945. Far more flexible and dressier than a three-link, and it drapes better on a small wrist. More links also means more places to develop stretch.
- President-style: three semi-circular links, introduced with the Day-Date in 1956. Heavy, formal, and soft on the wrist because rounded links present less flat surface.
- Beads of rice: many small rounded beads in the center rows, a mid-century style associated with the Geneva bracelet maker Gay Frères. Supple and light.
- Milanese mesh: finely woven wire, usually with a sliding clasp that adjusts anywhere along its length. Low profile and endlessly adjustable, though a coarse weave pulls arm hair.
- H-link: links shaped like an H from above, flatter and more architectural than an Oyster.
- Integrated: built into the case with no conventional lugs, as on the sports watches that followed the Royal Oak in 1972 and the Nautilus in 1976. Superb when it fits, a dead end when it does not, because you can only use what the manufacturer makes.
How to judge a bracelet
Four details separate a bracelet still good in twenty years from one that rattles in two.
Solid versus folded end links. The end link joins the bracelet to the case between the lugs. A folded end link is stamped from sheet metal and bent to shape: light, cheap and prone to sitting loosely. A solid end link is machined from a block, fits the case closely and stops the bracelet clattering. It is the most visible quality signal on a bracelet.
Hollow versus solid links. The same logic runs down the length. Hollow links are folded sheet; solid links are machined and heavier. Hollow links wear at the pin holes faster, the usual cause of the sagging feel people call bracelet stretch.
Screws versus pins. Links are held by friction pins, pin-and-collar assemblies or screws. Screwed links are the most serviceable, since they can be removed and refitted repeatedly without deforming anything. Friction pins are cheapest and easy to bend on refitting.
Taper. A bracelet that leaves the case at 20 mm and reaches the clasp at 16 mm is tapered. The underside of your wrist is narrower than the top, so a parallel bracelet has to bunch somewhere. A tapered one follows the wrist and disappears; an untapered one feels like a cuff.
Clasps and adjustment
The clasp is where comfort is won or lost, and where manufacturers economize to hit a price.
A pin buckle (or tang buckle) is the frame and prong on most leather straps: light, cheap to replace, adjustable to any hole, but it bends the strap tightly every time you fasten it, which is where leather eventually cracks.
A deployant clasp (a butterfly when it opens from both sides) folds the strap into itself, so the leather never bends sharply and never slides over your hand. That extends strap life considerably. The trade-offs are thickness under the wrist and fixed adjustment.
A folding clasp with a safety catch is the dive-watch answer, adding a flip-lock cover that must be lifted before the clasp opens. With an extension piece for a wetsuit sleeve, it is the arrangement dive watch practice has settled on, and the reason a dive watch stays on when the clasp is knocked.
Micro-adjustment is the row of holes inside the clasp giving an eighth of an inch or so (a few millimeters) in fixed steps. On-the-fly adjustment is better: a ratchet or slider that extends the bracelet with a fingernail while you wear it. Wrists change size through the day, and adding a sixteenth of an inch (2 mm) at 4 pm without a tool is a real improvement, not a marketing feature.
Leather
Calfskin is the default: available everywhere, comfortable once broken in, made in every finish from matte to high gloss. Shell cordovan is cut from a dense membrane in the hindquarters of a horse hide, and it is prized because it creases into gentle rolls rather than cracking. It costs several times what calf costs and takes months to tan.
Alligator and crocodile are the traditional dress exotics, and both are regulated under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which lists crocodilian species across its appendices and requires permits for cross-border trade. A reputable strap comes with paperwork; one bought from abroad without it can be seized at the border.
Tanning matters more than most buyers realize. Vegetable tanning uses tannins from bark and wood, takes weeks, and gives a firm strap that darkens with wear. Chrome tanning uses chromium salts, takes a day or two, and gives a softer, more color-stable, more water-tolerant strap. Neither is better in the abstract.
Rubber, FKM and silicone
Rubber is the honest choice for anything wet. Two chemistries dominate.
FKM, the ASTM D1418 designation for fluoroelastomer (sold under trade names such as Viton), is denser, resists heat, chlorine, salt water, sunscreen and solvents, and does not attract lint. It feels firmer and costs more.
Silicone is soft, cheap and comfortable straight out of the package. Its surface also attracts dust, lint and hair enough to be irritating, and it tears more readily once nicked. Fine for a pool watch; for anything worn near a jacket pocket or a dog, FKM is the better answer.
Either way, rubber ages from ultraviolet light and ozone rather than from use, so a spare left in a sunny window degrades while doing nothing.
NATO, Zulu, and fabric straps
The NATO strap is a single length of nylon that passes under the caseback, through both spring bars, and back through a second keeper layer. The design descends from a British Ministry of Defence specification, cataloged as Defence Standard 66-47 and nicknamed the G10 after the stores requisition form used to order one.
Its advantage is structural, not stylistic. On a two-piece strap, one failed spring bar drops the watch. On a single-pass strap the nylon runs through both bars and under the case, so a single failure leaves the watch hanging on the other bar and still on your wrist. That is why the military specified it.
Zulu straps are the heavier cousin: thicker nylon, chunkier rounded hardware. Tougher, and they lift the watch further off the wrist, which is the main drawback of any single-pass design.
Perlon is braided nylon rather than woven webbing. The buckle pin passes through the braid instead of punched holes, so adjustment is continuous, and the open weave breathes better than anything else here. Sailcloth is a coated, textured fabric, often over a rubber core, giving a technical look with rubber's water tolerance. Plain canvas and textile straps sit between leather and nylon: comfortable, casual, best kept dry.

Treat the lifespan column as a rough expectation, not a guarantee. Heat, sweat and sunlight change all of it substantially.
Changing a strap without damaging the watch
Use a spring bar tool: a forked end for compressing the spring bar flange, a pointed end for pushing bars out through drilled lug holes. It costs very little and there is no substitute.
- Lay the watch face down on a soft cloth, never over a hard bench or a sink.
- Mask the inside faces of the lugs with tape, or hold a folded cloth against them. Almost every slip lands there, and lug scratches are effectively permanent, because refinishing a lug changes the shape of the case.
- Slide the forked end between strap and lug, catch the flange, compress the bar and lift that side clear.
- Refit by seating one end in its hole, compressing the other and easing it in. Push the strap side to side afterwards: if it moves, the bar is not seated.
Quick-release spring bars carry a small knurled lever, so you retract them with a fingernail and no tool. Excellent for straps you swap often, at the cost of a more complex bar, which is why they are rarer on dive watches.
Spring bar sizes are quoted as length by diameter, and length must match the lug width exactly. Diameter is commonly around 1.5 mm on dress watches and around 1.8 mm on sports watches, with heavier bars of roughly 2 mm and above on dive watches, where ISO 6425 requires the attachment to survive a specified pull test. An undersized bar is the most common self-inflicted watch loss there is: it seats, it looks right, and it shears under a knock.
Replace bars if they look bent, if the tips are polished flat, after any hard impact, and as a matter of course if you swap straps often, since repeated compression tires the spring. If in doubt, replace them: they cost almost nothing, and a failed bar costs you the watch.
Cleaning and hygiene
A strap collects sweat, dead skin and soap residue all day. Most strap smells are hygiene, not material failure.
- Metal bracelets: warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush worked into the links and clasp, then rinse and dry. Check the crown is screwed down first, and see our water resistance guide if you are unsure the case is up to it.
- Leather: never soak it. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry away from radiators and sunlight, and use conditioner sparingly. Rotating two straps so each dries fully is worth more than any product.
- Rubber: soap and warm water, with dish soap for the greasy film that builds up. Rinse well, because residue is what makes rubber feel tacky.
- Nylon and perlon: take it off the watch and hand wash it, or machine wash it in a mesh bag, then air dry. This is the great advantage of fabric.

Common follow-up questions
How do I know what strap size to buy?
Measure the gap between the lugs in millimeters with a ruler or calipers. Lug width is one of the measurements the watch industry keeps in metric, so buy it in millimeters. That is the lug width, and it is what strap sizes refer to, most commonly 18, 20 or 22 mm. Buy the exact figure: a strap 1 mm narrow rattles and one 1 mm wide will not fit. How often should spring bars be replaced?
There is no schedule, and the honest answer is that if you are wondering, replace them. They cost almost nothing, they are the single point of failure between your watch and the floor, and repeated strap changes tire the spring inside. Replace them if they look bent, if the tips are worn flat, or after a hard knock.
Can I wear a leather strap in the shower?
No. Water pulls the oils out of leather, so the fibers stiffen and crack as they dry, the layers delaminate and the stitching rots. Even sweat shortens a leather strap's life noticeably. Use rubber or nylon for anything wet.
What is the difference between a NATO and a Zulu strap?
Both are single-pass nylon straps that thread under the caseback. A NATO follows the British military pattern: thinner nylon, flat lighter hardware and an extra keeper layer. A Zulu uses thicker nylon and heavier rounded rings. Zulus are tougher and sit higher on the wrist; NATOs are slimmer under a cuff.
