How should a watch fit?
Short answer
A watch fits when the case stays centered on the top of your wrist with your arm hanging, but you can still rotate it slightly by hand. The clasp should sit on the underside of your wrist, not off to one side. Size it late in the day, when your wrist is at its largest, and leave one step of adjustment in reserve.

A correctly fitted watch stays where you put it. Let your arm hang at your side and the case should remain centered on the top of your wrist, not slide toward the back of your hand. Lift your arm and it should not swing. Yet you should still be able to turn it a few degrees around your wrist with your other hand.
That combination, held in place but movable, is the whole target. Everything below is how to reach it and how to keep it once your wrist changes size, which it does every day.
How much play a bracelet should have
The advice you will hear in most stores is to leave room for two fingers under the bracelet. It is wrong, and it is repeated everywhere. Two fingers of slack lets the watch head travel around your wrist and settle on the underside, where you cannot read it and where it meets every desk edge in the building.
Use the rotation test instead. With the clasp closed, take hold of the case and turn it. A well-sized bracelet lets the watch rotate slightly under hand pressure and returns to sitting flat. It does not travel down toward your hand under its own weight when your arm hangs, and it does not leave an impression in the skin when you take it off.
Where the clasp should sit
The clasp belongs on the underside of your wrist, roughly centered. If it has drifted around toward the thumb side or the little-finger side, the two halves of the bracelet are unequal, and the watch head will be pulled off center on top.
This happens when links are removed from only one side. The fix is to take links from both sides, as evenly as the design allows, so the clasp stays opposite the case. Some bracelets only offer removable links on one side, which sets a limit on how well they can be balanced; that is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
Comfort matters here too. A thick folding clasp sits directly against the underside of the wrist, which is thinner and bonier than the top, so a bulky clasp is felt more than an equivalent thickness at the case.
Your wrist is a different size by evening
Wrist circumference changes through the day with temperature, activity, salt intake and altitude on a flight. A swing of around 6 mm (a quarter of an inch) between a cool morning and a warm evening is ordinary, and it is more in hot weather or after exercise.
Two conclusions follow. Size in the afternoon or evening, when your wrist is at its largest, and take the larger reading if you measure twice. Then leave yourself one step of adjustment in each direction, because a fit with no reserve is only correct for part of the day. Our answer on measuring your wrist covers the measurement itself.
Links, half links and micro-adjustment
Bracelet adjustment comes from three mechanisms working at different resolutions, and better bracelets add a fourth.

Full links alone are too coarse for most wrists: one link too few is tight, one too many is loose. That gap is exactly what half links and micro-adjustment exist to close, so ask whether a bracelet includes half links before you assume a size can be dialed in. On-the-fly systems, sold by Rolex as Easylink and Glidelock and by most dive watch makers under their own names, are a genuine functional improvement rather than a marketing feature.
Straps: aim for the middle hole
On a leather, rubber or nylon strap, the target is simple. When the strap is comfortable, the buckle tongue should land in the middle hole, leaving room in both directions. On the last hole the strap is too long and the tail flaps. On the first, you have no room left as the leather stretches slightly over its first few weeks.
Strap lengths are sold as codes, usually short, regular and long, and quoted as two pieces such as 115/75 mm with the longer piece first. There is no standard behind the codes, so check the maker's own chart. One fit problem no adjustment solves: if the lug tips overhang the flat top of your wrist, tightening the strap only makes the case rock harder. That is a case dimension problem, not a sizing one.
Common follow-up questions
Should a watch be worn above or below the wrist bone?
Just above it, on the forearm side. Worn over the bone the case rocks on a high point and digs in when you bend your hand back. Worn low on the hand side it slides onto the back of the wrist and knocks into things. The flat area immediately behind the bone is where the case is supported on both sides.
Is it worse for a watch to be too tight or too loose?
Too tight is worse for you and too loose is worse for the watch. A tight bracelet presses on the wrist all day and has nowhere to go when your wrist swells. A loose one lets the head swing to the underside of your wrist, where it collects impacts against desks and door frames.
Can a jeweler adjust any bracelet?
Most, but not all. Screwed and pin-and-collar links come apart cleanly with the right tool. Some designs place all the removable links on one side, which shifts the clasp off center when several come out, and integrated bracelets on some sports watches allow very little adjustment at all. Ask before buying if your wrist is at either end of the range.
How do I stop a heavy watch sliding around on a leather strap?
A dense case on a thin, soft strap has nothing holding it in place, so it migrates until it ends up dial-down. A thicker, stiffer strap, a slightly snugger setting, or a strap that tapers less will all help. A bracelet solves it outright by spreading the weight around the whole wrist.
