A mechanical watch is metal sliding on metal, thousands of times a minute, in a film of oil thinner than a fingerprint ridge. The steel will outlive you. The oil will not. That mismatch is why servicing exists, and everything else here follows from it.

A full service means complete disassembly, staged cleaning, inspection and replacement of worn parts, fresh lubrication with several oils and greases at specified points, reassembly, regulation in multiple positions, new gaskets, a pressure test and a period on the bench. Manufacturers commonly quote five to ten years. Service on symptoms with a sensible outer limit, not on a calendar alone.

Why oil is the whole reason a service exists

Watch lubricants are not one substance. A movement uses a family of them: a thin oil for fast, lightly loaded pivots such as the escape wheel and balance, a thicker oil for slower, higher-torque wheels near the barrel, a specialist oil at the pallet stones, and greases for the barrel wall and keyless works. Using the wrong one, or the right one in the wrong quantity, is a common fault in cheap work.

They fail in four ways, and all four happen whether or not the watch runs. They thin and spread, as capillary action pulls oil from where it was placed. They migrate to where they do nothing useful. They oxidize on contact with air and traces of metal. And they dry, leaving a varnish that increases friction rather than reducing it.

Then the expensive part. A pivot running dry in its jewel no longer floats on a film; it cuts. Hardened steel against synthetic ruby, with metal dust as an abrasive, wears an oval into a round hole and a groove into the pivot. You are then buying a balance staff, a jewel, possibly a wheel and the labor to fit them. A service costs a roughly fixed amount. Not servicing costs an open-ended one.

The decline shows early. Amplitude, the angle through which the balance swings, falls as friction rises, and a watchmaker reading a timing machine spots old oil long before the rate misbehaves. To track your own watch, see timing your own watch.

Power flow. Everything a mechanical watch does is one spring unwinding, held back by an oscillator that only lets it go one beat at a time.

What a full service should include

If a quote does not describe something close to this, it is not a service. It may be a clean and regulation, a legitimate cheaper job, but it should be called one.

Inspection Every pivot, jewel, tooth and spring examined under magnification, before cleaning washes evidence away.
Cleaning in stages Ultrasonic baths in sequence: cleaning solution, rinses, drying. Balance and pallet fork treated separately, never sharing a bath with greasy barrel parts.
Parts replacement Gaskets always, and the mainspring routinely, since a spring years in the coil takes a set. Plus any worn jewel, staff, pinion or wheel.
Lubrication Several specified oils and greases in measured quantities at named points, often with epilame on escapement parts to stop oil spreading.
Reassembly and regulation Rebuilt with freedom and endshake checked at each stage, then rate, amplitude and beat error adjusted in multiple positions and states of wind.

Symptoms that mean service now

A watch that suddenly gains minutes a day is usually magnetized rather than broken, and demagnetizing takes seconds. Check that before spending anything: see magnetism and watches.

How often, honestly

Manufacturers commonly publish five to ten years, and some now suggest longer. The interval has genuinely stretched: synthetic lubricants are more stable than mid-20th century oils, epilame keeps oil in place, better-sealed cases keep humidity out, and some escapements reduce sliding friction. But a published interval is a marketing number as well as a technical one, and it assumes normal use. Heavy wear, swimming, humidity, shocks and a daily-used chronograph all shorten it.

So treat the figure as an outer limit, watch for the symptoms above, and get a timing check every couple of years, which costs little and sometimes nothing. A watch showing healthy amplitude, holding its power reserve and keeping a stable rate does not need opening because a date has passed.

Vintage is the exception: older lubricants and seals do not last as long, and a watch of unknown history should be serviced before it is worn rather than after something breaks. Our vintage watch buying guide treats service history as a pricing factor, because it is.

Manufacturer service or an independent watchmaker

Both are legitimate, and the trade-offs are real.

Manufacturer service gets guaranteed parts access, technicians trained on that caliber, a documented warranty and paperwork a future buyer will want. Against that: turnaround is often months, cost sits at the top of the range, and house policy may include refinishing the case and replacing parts a collector would rather keep.

An independent watchmaker usually offers shorter turnaround, lower cost, a direct conversation with the person at the bench, and willingness to follow your instructions on cosmetics. Against that: parts access for some brands is restricted, standards vary enormously, and any warranty is only as good as the business behind it.

The vintage concern deserves stating plainly. A factory service may replace an aged dial, a worn bezel insert or original hands with current parts, and may polish the case back to a factory profile. Those parts are usually not returned unless you ask, and originality that took decades to accumulate is gone in an afternoon. On a modern watch this hardly matters. On a 1960s piece it can be most of the value.

What to ask for in a quote

  • A written estimate after inspection, not a price quoted before the case is opened.
  • An itemized split between labor and parts, worn parts named.
  • Whether mainspring and gaskets are included as standard.
  • The cosmetic policy in writing, and the return of replaced parts.
  • Regulation in multiple positions, with a timing printout before and after.
  • Water resistance testing to a stated rating, and the guarantee on the work.

Expect a simple automatic to cost roughly $250 to $500 at an independent watchmaker in the US, and more at a brand service center: around $350 to $600 for a mainstream Swiss brand, and $800 to $1,200 for a Rolex or an Omega. A chronograph runs higher again, commonly $700 to $1,200. Those are order-of-magnitude figures rather than quotations, and they are quoted before sales tax, which varies by state. Labor rates and parts pricing differ from one city to the next and move over time, and readers outside the US should expect their own bench prices to sit somewhere else again, since import duty and local distribution feed into parts costs. Any figure quoted without an inspection is provisional.

Living with the watch between services

Most damage is not mechanical failure. It is water, magnets and impatience.

  • Rinse after seawater with fresh water, then dry. Salt crystallizes around the crown, caseback and bracelet links, and it corrodes.
  • Never operate the crown or pushers when the watch is wet. The seal depends on the crown being home, and pulling it out with a wet hand is the commonest way owners flood a watch.
  • Keep it away from magnets: speaker drivers, laptop and tablet closures, bag clasps, induction cooktops.
  • Avoid extreme temperature swings. Rapid cooling of a warm case draws air, and moisture, past the seals.
  • Take it off for hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms. Heat degrades gaskets and exceeds the conditions a rating assumes, as our water resistance guide explains, and have the seals tested whenever the case is opened.

Cleaning by material

A soft toothbrush, lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap will clean a steel case and bracelet safely, provided the crown is fully home and the watch has a real water resistance rating. Rinse, then dry with a lint-free cloth. Bracelets trap a startling quantity of skin and soap, and a clean one wears more slowly.

Gold needs a softer brush, since it scratches easily. Titanium cleans like steel but shows swirl marks readily. Bronze should be kept dry, its patina left alone unless you dislike it. PVD and DLC must never meet abrasives or metal polish: the layer is microns thick, and once it is through, it is through. Leather straps should be wiped, never washed; rubber and fabric can and should be washed properly, as our guide to straps and bracelets explains. Never put a whole watch in a domestic ultrasonic cleaner: it drives water past tired gaskets and can loosen hand fits.

Storage, and what to do if water gets in

Short-term storage is simple: crown screwed in, in a box or roll, away from heat, damp and magnets. Nothing needs to keep running. For longer, let the watch wind down rather than storing it fully wound, keep it cool and dry, and add a silica gel packet. Avoid a sealed leather case in a humid room, since leather holds moisture against the watch. Whether you need a winder is covered in watch winders and storage, and for most people the answer is no.

Condensation under the crystal is an emergency. Water in a movement causes rust, and rust does not stop when the watch dries. Take it off, do not run it, do not bury it in rice, do not apply heat, and get it to a watchmaker within days rather than weeks. That gap is often the difference between a service and a new movement.

Common follow-up questions

How often does a mechanical watch really need servicing?

Manufacturers commonly quote five to ten years, and some modern movements are specified for longer. Treat that as an outer limit, not a schedule. Service when the power reserve drops, the rate drifts, the crown feels gritty or moisture appears, and otherwise within roughly a decade.

Does a watch need servicing if it is never worn?

Eventually, yes. Lubricants oxidize, thin and migrate with time rather than use, so a watch in a drawer ages its oil even though it is not wearing its pivots. Have a long-stored watch checked before it returns to wear.

Is a manufacturer service worth the extra cost?

For a modern watch under warranty, usually, because the warranty may depend on it. Out of warranty, a good independent is often equally competent and much faster. For a vintage watch, an independent who will follow your instructions on originality is frequently the better choice.

Will a service make my watch keep perfect time?

It should bring the watch back within its designed tolerance, which for most movements means a few seconds a day in the positions it was adjusted in. It will not make it better than its design allows. If you want a particular rate on the wrist, give the watchmaker a week of your own timekeeping data and ask them to regulate to your habits.
