Watch strap and bracelet costs

A strap or bracelet is the cheapest way to change a watch and the easiest thing to get wrong. Indicative US prices in 2026: fabric and NATO straps run roughly $12 to $30, leather $25 to $150, rubber $30 to $120, and aftermarket steel bracelets $60 to $200. Manufacturer bracelets from the larger Swiss brands commonly sit between $200 and $900, and above that on precious metal. US figures are quoted before sales tax, which varies by state, and a list price outside the US moves with local tax, import duty and distribution, so treat all of these as bands rather than quotes.

Lug width is the thing you actually buy

You do not buy a strap for a watch. You buy it for a number: the distance in millimeters between the inside faces of the lugs, where the spring bar sits. Get that number and the rest of the market is open to you, including makers who have never heard of your watch.

Measure the gap with calipers rather than measuring an old strap, because leather compresses at the ends and rubber swells, so a worn 20 mm strap often measures under 19.5 mm. Even widths dominate: 18, 20 and 22 mm cover most watches. Odd widths such as 19 and 21 mm appear on Swiss cases and cost more, because fewer makers stock them and stock clears slowly. The second measurement that matters is lug to lug distance, which decides whether the watch fits your wrist at all. Width decides what you can order; lug to lug decides whether you should have bought the watch.

What you are actually paying for

Four things separate a $15 strap from a $120 one, and only the last is discretionary.

  • Material grade. Full-grain leather against corrected or bonded leather. Fluoroelastomer (FKM) against cheap silicone. Solid milled steel links against folded sheet.
  • Construction. Stitched edges rather than glued, a reinforced keeper, a lining that does not delaminate when it gets wet.
  • Hardware. A machined buckle or deployant clasp against a stamped one, and screw bars rather than friction pins.
  • Fit to a specific case. Curved or fitted ends that follow the case profile cost more and only fit one family of watches.

What each material costs and why

Fabric and NATO. The cheapest genuine upgrade in watches. A NATO strap passes under the case on a second layer, so if one spring bar fails the watch stays on your wrist. It adds a millimeter or two of height, which matters on a thick watch. Anything above roughly $80 is buying hardware finish and weave density rather than function.

Leather. The band where price and quality correlate most cleanly up to about $100, then flatten. Leather and water are a bad combination: sweat and swimming both destroy it, which is why leather belongs on a dress or office watch rather than anything you take into the sea. Expect to replace a daily-worn leather strap every one to three years, and budget accordingly.

Rubber. The gap between a $30 silicone strap and a $90 FKM one is real. FKM resists heat, chlorine, salt and skin oils better, and it does not attract lint in the same way. On a watch you actually swim with, this is the material to buy.

Metal. An aftermarket bracelet at $120 to $200 with solid end links and screwed links is often better made than the factory bracelet on a mid-range watch. Below about $60, expect hollow end links, folded clasps and pins that work loose. Spring bars, buckles and tools

The consumables are cheap and the tools pay for themselves after one strap change.

  • Spring bars. A pack of assorted bars costs $8 to $15. Tool watches generally use 1.78 mm diameter bars; thinner dress cases use 1.5 mm, and a fat bar will not enter a narrow lug hole.
  • Quick release bars, with a small lever on the bar, cost $8 to $20 a pair and turn a strap change into a five second job. They are marginally weaker than solid bars, which matters on a dive watch and not at all on a dress watch.
  • Spring bar tool. $10 to $25. The bench standard from the established Swiss tool makers sits at the top of that band and is worth it if you change straps often.
  • Buckle or clasp. A plain steel buckle costs $10 to $30. A deployant clasp costs $30 to $120 and roughly doubles the life of a leather strap by removing the repeated bending at one hole.

What a bracelet and its sizing costs

Sizing is normally included when you buy the watch from a dealer, and it is worth asking for the removed links, which you will need if you sell the watch or your wrist changes. Elsewhere, expect roughly $20 to $40 at a jeweler or watchmaker, and up to $40 at a dealer that did not sell you the watch.

Doing it yourself needs a pin pusher or a small screwdriver set at $10 to $30. Screwed links are straightforward. Friction pins with split collars are fiddly, and the collar is easy to lose. The part that matters more than either is the clasp: a bracelet with micro-adjustment lets you take up the two or three millimeters that a wrist gains on a warm day, which is the difference between a bracelet that fits and one that only fits in the morning. The integrated bracelet problem

An integrated bracelet is one where the first link is shaped to the case and there are no conventional lugs. It looks purposeful and it wears beautifully, and it removes your strap market almost entirely.

Three consequences follow, and they are permanent. You cannot cheaply change the look of the watch. If the bracelet is damaged, the only supplier is the manufacturer, at manufacturer prices. And if the reference is discontinued, a replacement bracelet may simply be unavailable, which can make a repairable watch effectively unwearable. The Tissot PRX illustrates the trade-off at the affordable end: an excellent watch on its own bracelet, with a much narrower set of options afterwards than a conventional 20 mm case would give you. A sensible strap budget

For most owners, $70 to $150 spread across a fabric strap, one good leather or rubber strap and a spring bar tool covers everything a single watch needs for years, and it is the cheapest way to make one watch feel like three. Spend more only when a specific strap solves a specific problem: FKM because you swim, a deployant because your leather straps keep failing at one hole, a full bracelet because the factory one rattles.

Two cases justify going further. If you own a watch whose factory bracelet is part of its resale value, keep it and wear an aftermarket strap instead. Common follow-up questions

Is an expensive strap actually better?

Up to about $100, yes, and measurably. Full-grain leather with stitched rather than glued edges, a properly finished buckle and correct taper all last longer and sit better than a $20 strap. Above roughly $200 you are largely paying for hand finishing, exotic leathers and a maker's name. A $60 strap from a competent maker outperforms a $200 one from a fashion brand.

Why does a manufacturer bracelet cost so much?

Partly because it is genuinely expensive to make: solid milled links, machined end links that match the case curve to a fraction of a millimeter, and a clasp with fine adjustment. Mostly because the brand is the only supplier and the demand is captive. If you need a factory bracelet for a specific reference, price it before you buy the watch, because on some steel models it runs to $900 and on precious metal far beyond that.

Can I fit a strap myself?

Yes, and most people should. A spring bar tool costs $10 to $25 and the job takes a few minutes. The risk is a slipped tool gouging the case between the lugs, which is a permanent scratch on the most visible edge of the watch. Work over a cloth, use the forked end on the bar rather than levering against the case, and buy quick release bars if you change straps often.

What does it cost to have a bracelet sized?

Usually nothing at the shop that sold you the watch, since sizing is normally included with the purchase. Elsewhere, a jeweler or watchmaker typically charges roughly $20 to $40. Doing it yourself needs a pin pusher or screwdriver set at around $10 to $30, and the main hazard is a bent link pin or a scratched link on a bracelet with friction pins.
