Definition

The crown is the small knurled knob on the side of the case, fixed to a stem that passes through the case wall into the movement. Turning and pulling it are the only ways most owners ever interact with the mechanism directly. Inside, the keyless works translates the crown's position into a function: pushed home it winds the mainspring, and pulled out it sets the hands or, on many watches, a date.

What sits behind the knob

Three parts do the work. The crown is a turned metal knob, typically 5 to 7 mm across on a three-hand watch and 6 to 8 mm on a diver. It threads onto a stem, a hardened steel shaft cut at its outer end in one of a few standard sizes: watchmakers order them by tap number, where tap 9 is a 0.90 mm thread and tap 10 is 1.00 mm. The stem runs through a case tube fitted into the case wall, and gaskets inside that tube ride on the stem.

At the other end the stem meets the keyless works on the dial side of the movement. Pushed home, a winding pinion drives the ratchet wheel over the barrel. Pulled out, a setting lever swings a yoke that disengages the winding pinion and brings the sliding pinion into mesh with the calendar or the hand-setting wheels instead.

How the positions work

A simple watch has two positions. A watch with a quickset date usually has three: pushed in to wind, first click out to advance the date, fully out to set the time. Movements with a hacking lever stop the balance in the final position so the seconds hand can be synchronised with a time signal.

Setting should be smooth, and the crown should return positively to each click. A crown that spins freely without winding, or that will not stay in position, points at the keyless works rather than at anything the owner has done wrong.

Quartz watches use the same positions for a different purpose. On most of them the last position stops the motor as well as freeing the hands, the standard way to park one in a drawer without draining the cell.

Winding through the crown has limits worth knowing. A manual watch is wound until you feel a firm stop, and you stop there. An automatic never gives you that stop, because its mainspring is anchored by a bridle that slips inside the barrel once the spring is full, which is why you cannot overwind one by hand. Twenty to thirty turns will restart a stopped automatic.

Why it matters for water resistance

The crown is the largest hole in the case, and it is sealed by gaskets around the stem. A screw-down crown adds a threaded collar that clamps those gaskets and takes the load off them, which is why nearly every serious diver's watch uses one. It is also why the same watch is only water resistant with the crown fully screwed home.

Not every sealed crown screws down. Panerai clamps instead, with a lever bridge that cams down over the crown, and many push-pull crowns rated to 100 meters rely on a heavier gasket stack and spring load. What they share is that the seal is a consumable and the rating comes from a static pressure test rather than from swimming, as our guide to water resistance sets out.

In practice

Two habits protect the mechanism and the seals. Wind and set with the watch off the wrist, so the stem is not being levered sideways at an angle. And avoid setting the date during the hours when the calendar change is engaging, conventionally treated as roughly 9pm to 3am, since the wheels are already partly in motion.

Crown gaskets are consumables. They dry, compress and lose their seal over years, which is why a pressure test after service matters more than the number printed on the case back. A test is an indicative $25 to $60 in the United States before sales tax, and how often to have one done depends on how wet the watch gets.

When it goes wrong

The symptom usually names the part. A crown that turns endlessly in both directions without winding means a stripped thread between crown and stem, or a failed clutch. A crown that will not thread back down is normally cross-threading, grit in the tube, or a stem standing proud of where it belongs, all covered in crown will not screw down. Common confusions

The crown is not the stem. Most of what listings describe as a broken crown is a broken or stripped stem. It is not a pusher either: chronograph pushers work the timing functions, are sealed separately.

And a signed crown is a trademark, not evidence. Counterfeiters reproduce logos on crowns as readily as on dials, which is why spotting a fake works through the movement and the case rather than the badge.
