What is lug-to-lug distance and why does it matter?
Short answer
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the lug diagonally opposite, measured along the length of the case. It is the footprint the watch occupies on your arm. It matters because the lug tips must stay inside the flat top of your wrist: if they overhang, the case cannot lie flat, whatever the diameter says.

The lugs are the four horns projecting from a watch case that hold the strap or bracelet. Lug-to-lug distance is the straight-line measurement from the tip of one lug to the tip of the lug diagonally opposite it, taken along the length of the case rather than across its width. It is sometimes written L2L, and some sellers call it case length.
It matters because it is the footprint the watch actually occupies on your arm. Diameter tells you how wide the case is at its middle. Lug-to-lug tells you how far it reaches from one end of your wrist to the other, and that is the dimension your wrist can physically refuse.
Why it outranks diameter
Your wrist is not a cylinder. The top presents a flat or gently domed plateau between the two bones, and past the edges of that plateau the surface falls away sharply. A watch case is rigid. If the lug tips extend past the point where your wrist curves down, they lose contact with skin and become levers: the case tilts, rocks when you move, and presses at the opposite corner.
No strap tension corrects this. Tightening a bracelet on an overhanging case only increases the pressure at the contact points. That is why the rule is close to absolute while everything else in sizing is a preference.
Diameter cannot stand in for it, because the ratio between the two is not fixed. Lug-to-lug typically runs 6 to 11 mm greater than the diameter, so a 40 mm watch can be 46 mm or 51 mm long depending entirely on how the lugs are drawn. A 42 mm case with short, curved lugs frequently sits better than a 39 mm case with long, flat ones.
How to measure it
On a watch you own, digital calipers are the right tool and cost very little. Close the jaws gently on the outer tips of two diagonally opposite lugs, along the length of the case, and read the figure. Do not squeeze: calipers can mark a polished lug, so approach slowly and stop at first contact.
Without calipers, lay the watch face down on a sheet of paper, mark the position of each lug tip with a pencil held vertically, and measure between the marks with a ruler. It is accurate to about a millimeter, which is enough for a fit decision.
For a watch you do not own, you have three options. Ask the seller to measure it. Find a review that publishes measured dimensions rather than repeating the specification sheet. Or use the paper cutout method: draw a rectangle lug-to-lug tall by diameter wide, cut it out, tape it to the top of your wrist and look in a mirror. Adjust for shape. A flat-topped wrist will carry 2 to 3 mm more than its row suggests, and a round, sharply tapering wrist rather less. Why brands rarely publish it
Diameter and thickness appear on essentially every specification sheet. Lug-to-lug usually does not, including from Rolex, Omega, Seiko and Tudor, which is awkward given that it is the more useful number. Part of the reason is habit: diameter has been the marketing figure for decades. Part of it is that a case with curved or stepped lugs has no single obvious point to measure from, so a published figure would invite arguments.
The practical response is to ask. A dealer with the watch in front of them can measure it in a few seconds, and a private seller can do the same with a ruler and a sheet of paper. If a listing omits lug-to-lug and the seller will not measure it, treat the dimension as unknown rather than assuming it is proportional to the diameter. One last distinction worth keeping straight: lug width is not lug-to-lug. Lug width is the gap between the lugs, commonly 18, 20 or 22 mm, and it decides which straps fit rather than how the watch sits. The strap and lug width finder handles that side of it.
Common follow-up questions
Is lug-to-lug the same as case length?
In practice yes. When a listing quotes case length or L2L, it means the distance from lug tip to lug tip along the long axis. Be careful with the phrase overall length, which some sellers use for the case plus the whole strap or bracelet. If a number looks far too large, that is usually what happened.
Do curved lugs change the number?
Not the number, but they change what the number means. Lug-to-lug is measured as a straight line, so a case with strongly downturned lugs and a case with flat ones can both read 48 mm while wrapping your wrist very differently. Curved lugs typically buy 2 to 3 mm of effective length on a round wrist.
What about watches with no lugs at all?
Integrated bracelet designs and cushion cases still have a case length along the strap axis, and it does the same job. Measure from where the bracelet leaves the case on one side to the equivalent point on the other, and apply the same overhang rule.
How much overhang is actually acceptable?
A millimeter or two past the point where your wrist starts to curve is usually tolerable, especially with curved lugs and a firmly fitted strap. Beyond that the case begins to lever off the skin at one end, and you feel it as rocking and as pressure at the opposite lug tip.
