Micro-adjustment clasp
Definition
A mechanism in a bracelet clasp that lengthens or shortens the bracelet by a few millimeters without removing a link, so the fit can be corrected as the wrist swells or shrinks.

A metal bracelet adjusts in whole links, typically 5 to 9 mm at a time. A wrist changes size by several millimeters over a day, more in heat, more again after exercise. The gap between those two facts is why a bracelet can be perfect at breakfast and wrong by evening.
Micro-adjustment closes it. The clasp carries a mechanism that shifts the bracelet's effective length in small increments, and the good implementations do it without tools.
The arithmetic is what makes the feature matter. Removing one more link takes 5 to 9 mm out of the circumference, which on a 7 inch (about 178 mm) wrist is a jump of roughly three to five percent. That is far coarser than the change your wrist makes on its own between a cold morning and a hot afternoon. Micro-adjustment fills the space between two link steps, which is why a clasp with a 2 mm increment finds a fit that a bracelet without one cannot reach.
The systems you will meet
- Holes in the clasp. The cheapest and commonest: move a spring bar between two or three positions. Needs a tool, the increments are coarse, and the total travel is usually only a few millimeters.
- Ratcheting extension. Push a button or lever and slide the clasp out, click by click. Rolex's Glidelock and Easylink and Tudor's T-fit are the best known; several brands now offer a version.
- Sliding or friction extension. A blade held by friction or a leaf spring that you pull out by hand. Cheap to build, quiet in use, and prone to creeping under load as it wears.
- Diver's extension. A folding section designed to fit over a wetsuit sleeve, which some owners repurpose as a coarse adjustment.

Setting it up
Size the bracelet in the afternoon, not first thing, because a wrist sized cold will be tight by evening. Remove links from both sides of the clasp so it stays centered on the underside of the wrist, following the arrows stamped inside the links, and stop one link before it feels right. Then close the remaining gap with the micro-adjustment, and leave it near the middle of its travel so you have room to move in both directions later. What good and bad look like
Good micro-adjustment is operable with one hand while the watch is on the wrist, has at least three or four positions, and holds where you put it. Bad micro-adjustment needs a spring bar tool and a flat surface, offers two positions several millimeters apart, or creeps back under the weight of the watch. On a clasp with spring bar holes, check the bar itself: a bent or fatigued bar is the usual reason a bracelet lets go, and replacements run an indicative US $8 to $15 a pack.
If the clasp on a watch you otherwise like has none, an aftermarket bracelet with a ratcheting clasp is the usual remedy. Expect an indicative US $60 to $200 before sales tax for a decent steel bracelet, and check the lug width and end link shape before buying. Why it is worth paying for
Of everything on a specification sheet, tool-free micro-adjustment is the feature owners notice most often and buyers consider least. A watch that fits properly all day is worn; a watch that pinches by mid-afternoon sits in a drawer. Weigh it more heavily than an extra 10 meters of water resistance. See watch sizing and fit.
Common confusions
Micro-adjustment is not the same as a deployant clasp, which is the folding mechanism itself; a deployant may or may not carry an adjustment. It is not a half-link either: a half-link is a permanent change made with tools, while micro-adjustment is meant to be changed daily. And a diver's extension is a coarse single step, not a fine adjustment, however often listings describe it as one.
One more point. Changing a clasp or a bracelet does not affect water resistance, because nothing on the outside of the case is part of the seal. That is a genuine difference from work that opens the case, which is why bracelet changes need no pressure test afterwards.
