What is the best everyday watch?

Short answer

There is no single best everyday watch, because the constraint is your wrist and your week, not the watch. Five criteria decide it: at least 100 m water resistance, a size that actually fits, a bracelet or strap you can adjust, a crystal you can live with, and a movement you can get serviced where you live. Meet all five and dozens of watches qualify.

There is no best everyday watch, and the question is worth refusing rather than answering. An everyday watch is defined by a wrist, a climate, a job and a tolerance for fuss, and none of those is the same for two people. A watch that is perfect on a 19 cm (7.5 inch) wrist overhangs a 15 cm (5.9 inch) one. Any page that names one model has quietly substituted its own circumstances for yours.

What does generalize is the criteria. Five of them do almost all the work, and applying them honestly reduces a catalog of thousands to a shortlist of a dozen. Then you pick on looks, which nobody can do for you.

Water resistance: 100 m as the working floor

A watch you wear every day will get wet: a hand washed without thinking, rain, a shower, a swim you did not plan. Set 100 m as the floor and stop worrying about it.

The number is not a depth you can descend to. Ratings come from a static laboratory pressure test under ISO 22810, on a new watch. 30 m is a rain rating. 50 m is a handwashing rating that many people swim with and mostly get away with. 100 m is the first level genuinely comfortable for swimming, and it is also the floor ISO 6425 sets for a certified divers' watch. The ladder. Treat the printed figure as roughly three to four times the depth you should actually take the watch to, and treat anything under 10 bar as not for swimming.

Two of those conditions are the ones people get wrong. A screw-down crown must be fully home, every time. And the rating describes the watch as manufactured, not as it is now: gaskets age, so a watch that swims should be pressure tested every year or two, as our answer on pressure testing intervals explains.

A size that actually fits

Diameter is the number brands print and the wrong number to judge by. What decides whether a watch sits on your wrist or hangs off it is lug to lug distance, the span from one lug tip to the opposite one, because the lugs are what reach the edge.

Case dimensions. Lug to lug and thickness decide comfort. Diameter decides how the watch looks, which is why it is the number every brand prints and every buyer overreads.

The test is simple. Measure the flat top of your wrist, between the two bones. If the lug to lug span is longer than that, the lugs overhang and the watch rocks. A 42 mm watch with short curved lugs can fit a wrist that a 38 mm watch with long straight lugs does not. Thickness is the one people forget. A watch over about 13 mm catches on cuffs, and on a daily watch that is a small irritation repeated until you stop wearing it.

A bracelet or strap you can adjust

This is the criterion most buyers skip and most owners end up caring about most. Your wrist changes size over the course of a day, more in heat, and steel expands and contracts too. A bracelet sized perfectly in the morning is tight by late afternoon.

The fix is micro-adjustment: a clasp that shifts the fit by a few millimeters without removing links. Tool-free versions are far more useful than half-links or screw-adjusted positions you need a workshop for. On a watch you wear every day, a good clasp is worth more than almost any other feature at the same cost.

A strap sidesteps the problem, because holes are already micro-adjustment. It brings its own trade: leather dislikes water, fabric and rubber survive anything but read as casual. A crystal you can live with

There is no perfect crystal, only a choice about which failure mode you prefer. Whatever the material, a flat or lightly domed crystal with good anti-reflective treatment is far more legible outdoors than a heavily domed one.

Sapphire resists scratching from almost everything you encounter, including keys and steel. It is also brittle: a sharp knock on a hard edge can chip or shatter it, and replacement is a workshop job. Mineral glass sits in between. Acrylic is soft, scuffs from a shirt cuff, and polishes back to clear in minutes with a mild abrasive, which is why it survives on watches meant to be beaten up.

A movement you can get serviced

An everyday watch is one you intend to keep, which makes serviceability a first-order criterion.

A widely supplied caliber, from Seiko, ETA, Sellita or Miyota, can be worked on by almost any competent watchmaker anywhere, with parts on the shelf. An exclusive in-house caliber usually cannot: parts run through the brand's network, which means longer turnaround, higher cost and fewer options if the brand withdraws from your market. Quartz changes the calculation. A standard quartz watch needs a battery every few years and a gasket check, and is otherwise close to maintenance-free for a decade. If low fuss is the priority, that is the honest recommendation, and our cost of ownership calculator shows the gap over twenty years.

At the bottom. The G-Shock DW5600 is close to the purest everyday watch made: 200 m water resistance, a resin case that survives what a steel one does not, quartz accuracy measured in seconds per month, and a battery life of years. What it gives up is a mineral crystal, a case that will never look formal, and a digital display some people do not want. The Seiko 5 Sports is the mechanical answer at similar money: 100 m rated, automatic, robust. It gives up a screw-down crown, uses a hardened mineral crystal rather than sapphire, and its movement is specified across a wide rate band, roughly minus 35 to plus 45 seconds a day, which is fine but not close to chronometer territory.

In the middle. This is where the criteria are met most cheaply. The Tissot PRX gives you sapphire, 100 m, a well-made bracelet and a choice of quartz or an automatic with a long reserve. Its compromise is the integrated bracelet: you cannot easily fit a standard strap, so you are committed to the look. The Prospex Turtle is 200 m and gives up size, wearing large on a modest wrist. The Khaki Field Mechanical is the best-proportioned of the three and fails the water resistance criterion outright at 50 m, which disqualifies it if the watch will swim and is irrelevant if it will not.

At the top. The Tudor Black Bay 58 hits every criterion: 200 m, 39 mm with a short lug span, sapphire, a tool-free clasp adjustment, a roughly 70-hour reserve and COSC certification. It gives up thickness, and it depreciates, as our answer on whether Tudor is worth the money covers. The Seamaster 300M adds METAS-certified accuracy and 300 m of water resistance, and gives up more thickness still and a higher service bill. Both are excellent; neither is better than the DW5600 at surviving a bad day.

Narrowing it down for yourself

Work in this order and the shortlist assembles itself.

  1. Measure your wrist and set a maximum lug to lug span. Our answer on measuring your wrist eliminates most of the catalog in two minutes.
  2. Decide whether it swims. If yes, 100 m and a screw-down crown are non-negotiable. If no, the field opens up.

  5. Check where it gets serviced from where you live, before you buy.
  6. Then choose on looks, the one criterion nobody else can apply for you.

Common follow-up questions

Should an everyday watch be quartz or mechanical?

Either, and the honest answer is that quartz is the more practical choice. It is more accurate, needs no winding, is thinner, is cheaper to own and survives being ignored for weeks. Mechanical watches are chosen for reasons that are not practical, which is a legitimate basis for a purchase but should be recognized as what it is. Is one watch enough?

For most people, yes, and a single watch that meets all five criteria will cover a working week, a swim, a wedding and a weekend without complaint. The case for a second watch is usually aesthetic rather than functional. If you do want two, the useful split is by dress code and by risk: one you can knock about, one you would rather not.

How big should an everyday watch be?

Judge by lug to lug span rather than diameter, and keep the span inside the flat top of your wrist so the lugs do not overhang. For most wrists that lands somewhere between 44 and 50 mm of lug to lug, which corresponds to very different diameters depending on the case design. Does an everyday watch need a screw-down crown?

Not strictly, but it helps if the watch will get wet regularly. A screw-down crown removes the most common cause of water ingress, which is a crown left partly out. A push-in crown with good gaskets is fine for rain and handwashing. The important thing either way is that the seals are in current condition, which means a pressure test every year or two if the watch swims.

Is a smartwatch a better everyday watch?

For function, easily. It tells better time, tracks more, and does things a mechanical watch cannot attempt. What it gives up is lifespan: it becomes unsupported in a handful of years, where a serviced mechanical watch runs for decades.
