How do I measure my wrist for a watch?
Short answer
Wrap a soft tape measure or a strip of paper around your wrist just past the wrist bone, where a watch sits. Draw it snug without denting the skin and read the circumference in millimeters, converting from inches if that is what your tape shows. Measure in the afternoon, when your wrist is at its largest, and note whether the top of your wrist is flat or round.

Measuring a wrist takes about a minute and needs nothing you do not already own. Wrap a soft tape measure or a strip of paper around your wrist just past the wrist bone, snug but not tight, and read the number. Everything else on this page is about doing it in a way that gives a figure you can act on.
Work in millimeters. If your tape reads in inches, write the millimeter equivalent next to the figure, because case dimensions, lug widths and strap lengths are all quoted in millimeters.
What you need
A soft tailor's tape is the ideal tool. If you do not have one, cut a strip of paper about 13 mm (half an inch) wide and 254 mm (10 inches) long. A narrow strip follows the curve of the wrist; a wide one bridges across it and reads high. A shoelace or a length of string works too, as long as it does not stretch under tension.
Avoid a steel tape measure from a toolbox. It will not lie flat against the wrist, and the hook on the end adds an unpredictable amount.
Where to measure
Position matters more than most people expect. Put the tape just past the wrist bone, on the forearm side, away from your hand. That is where a watch settles once you are wearing it, and it is typically a few millimeters larger than the narrowest point of the joint that people instinctively wrap.
Keep your hand relaxed and your arm hanging naturally. Clenching a fist or flexing the forearm inflates the number. Measure the wrist you actually wear a watch on, which for most people is the non-dominant one, and expect the two to differ slightly.
The paper strip method
- Cut the strip and wrap it around your wrist just past the bone, with the ends overlapping.
- Draw it snug: it should stay put on its own without pressing a line into the skin.
- Mark the overlap point with a pen, holding the strip steady as you do it.
- Unwrap the strip, lay it flat against a ruler, and read from the end to the mark.
- Repeat once. If the two readings differ by more than 3 mm (an eighth of an inch), you are pulling with different tension; take the looser one.
A ruler with both scales removes the conversion step. If yours has only inches, multiply by 25.4 to get millimeters: six and a half inches is 165 mm, seven inches is 178 mm.
Also note the shape of your wrist
Circumference is one of two numbers worth having, and the second one takes ten seconds. Look at the top of your wrist. Some are a broad flat plateau between the two bones; others taper away sharply, leaving a narrow usable strip. Lay a ruler across the flat area and note where the surface begins to curve down on each side.
That width is the practical limit on lug-to-lug, the length of a watch case from lug tip to lug tip. A flat 178 mm (7 inch) wrist carries a longer case comfortably than a round 190 mm (7.5 inch) one, because on the round wrist the lug tips lose contact and lever the case away from the skin. What your measurement tells you
Once you have a figure, it points you toward a range of case sizes. It does not select one for you, and the bands overlap for a reason.

Strap lengths are sold as codes rather than measurements, quoted as two pieces such as 115/75 mm, longer piece first. There is no industry standard behind short, regular and long, so check the maker's own chart against your figure. Mistakes that cost you a size
- Measuring at the narrowest point. The joint is narrower than where the watch sits, and this is the most common reason a bracelet arrives too tight.
- Measuring in the morning. Cold, unswollen wrists read small.
- Pulling the tape. Soft tape stretches slightly and skin compresses. Snug, not tight.
- Using a wide strip of paper. Anything much over 13 mm (half an inch) will not follow the curve.
- Measuring over a bracelet you already own. That gives you the bracelet's length, not your wrist.
Common follow-up questions
Should I measure over a shirt cuff or bare skin?
Bare skin, and on the wrist you actually wear a watch on. Most people find one wrist is slightly larger than the other. A cuff adds a variable amount and will send you a size high, which matters most when you are ordering a bracelet sized to length before it ships.
How tight should the tape be?
Snug enough that it stays in place on its own, loose enough that it leaves no mark when you take it off. If the skin bulges above or below the tape, you are pulling too hard and will end up with a bracelet that is tight by evening.
Do I need my wrist width as well as the circumference?
It helps, and almost nobody takes it. Lay a ruler across the flat top of your wrist and note the distance between the points where the surface starts to curve away. That figure is the practical ceiling for lug-to-lug, and it is more informative than circumference on its own.
Does a digital caliper give a better result?
Not for circumference, since calipers measure across rather than around. They are useful for the other two numbers you will want: lug width and the flat width of your wrist. A soft tape or a paper strip remains the right tool for the wrap measurement.
