Changing a strap is the cheapest way to change a watch, and the only modification that alters nothing about the watch itself. The same steel sports watch on nylon, on leather and on a bracelet is three different objects in every respect except the mechanism inside.

It is also the one decision with a real failure mode. The strap and its two spring bars are the only parts of a watch whose failure costs you the entire watch, which is why the security argument belongs at the front of this comparison rather than buried under discussion of formality.

Why the attachment matters more than the material

A two-piece strap, whether leather, rubber or a metal bracelet, hangs the watch from two independent points. Each side is held by one spring bar, a small tube with a spring and two sprung tips seated in holes drilled in the lugs. If either bar shears, deforms or works loose, that side of the watch releases and the case swings down and off your wrist.

A single-pass nylon strap works differently. One continuous length of webbing runs under the caseback, through both spring bars, and back through a second layer. If a bar fails, the nylon is still captured by the other one and by its own path under the case, so the watch stays put. This is why the British military specified the design, cataloged as Defence Standard 66-47 and nicknamed the G10 after the requisition form used to order one. The style became fashionable much later, but the engineering intent was purely about not losing the watch.

That is the trade in one paragraph. Nylon buys you security and costs you height, because the strap passes between the caseback and your skin and lifts the watch 1 to 2 mm. Two-piece attachments sit flat and look better, and they carry a small ongoing risk that you manage by replacing spring bars.

NATO nylon: cheap, wet-tolerant, casual

Beyond security, nylon is the most practical option in heat and water. It absorbs sweat, but unlike leather it does not care: pull it off the watch, hand wash it or put it in a mesh bag in the machine, and it comes back like new. In a hot, humid summer that is worth more than any other property a strap can have.

Adjustment is continuous rather than in steps, because the buckle prong goes through whichever hole you want and the tail folds back through the keepers. A standard strap is around 280 mm (11 inches) long, which fits most adults, and shorter and longer cuts exist for wrists outside roughly 160 to 200 mm (6.3 to 7.9 inches).

The costs are real. The strap lifts the watch, which makes a thick watch feel taller and less stable, and it is the wrong answer on a small wrist for that reason. Hardware quality varies enormously at the $12 to $30 price point most nylon sits at: thin stamped rings bend, and cheap nylon frays at the buckle within months. Paying $40 to $80 buys better hardware and thicker webbing, not a different idea. And nylon eventually holds odor no matter how often you wash it, at which point you replace it, which is easy because it costs less than lunch.

Formally, it is casual and nothing else. A nylon strap on a dress watch does not read as relaxed, it reads as wrong.

Leather: the only material water actually ruins

Leather is the most comfortable material here once broken in, the only one that reads as formal, and the only one that is genuinely destroyed by the conditions the other two shrug off.

The mechanism is worth understanding because it explains every piece of care advice. Leather is a fiber structure held supple by oils. Water carries those oils out, and as the strap dries the fibers stiffen and lock, the layers that were glued together delaminate, and the stitching rots from the inside. That is why a soaked leather strap does not recover: nothing has been washed off it, something has been washed out of it. Sweat does the same thing slowly, which is why a leather strap worn daily through a hot summer is often finished within the season.

Tanning changes how much abuse it tolerates. Vegetable tanning uses tannins from bark, takes weeks, and produces a firm strap that darkens and patinates. Chrome tanning uses chromium salts, takes a day or two, and produces a softer, more color-stable, more water-tolerant strap. Neither is better in the abstract, and both die in the shower.

Leather also adds no height under the case, which is why it is the correct answer for a thin watch. Metal bracelets: weight distribution and hidden cost

A bracelet is the only option that spreads the watch across the whole circumference of your wrist instead of hanging it from one point on top. That is why a heavy watch feels lighter on a bracelet than on a strap of the same weight, and why divers are sold on them.

It is also the component where manufacturers economize most quietly, and there are four things to check. Solid end links, machined to fit the case, rather than folded sheet metal that rattles. Solid links through the length, rather than hollow folded ones that wear at the pin holes and produce the sag people call stretch. Screwed links rather than friction pins, because screws can be removed and refitted repeatedly without deforming. And a clasp with either several micro-adjustment holes or, better, an on-the-fly extension you can operate with a fingernail. Wrists swell through the day and in summer heat, and two millimeters at 4 pm is a real improvement rather than a marketing feature.

Bracelets clean up with warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush, they tolerate salt water if rinsed, and they last decades. The drawbacks are weight, the fact that sizing usually requires a tool or a trip to a jeweler, and that a bracelet from the watch manufacturer is often expensive and sometimes the only thing that fits the case properly.

Sizing, lug width and buying

Every strap decision starts with one number: the lug width, the gap between the lugs measured in millimeters. Most watches are 18, 20 or 22 mm. Buy the exact figure, because a strap 1 mm narrow rattles and one 1 mm wide will not go in. The strap and lug width finder will get you there if the manufacturer does not publish it.

Two-piece leather straps are usually sold in a standard pair of roughly 125 and 80 mm (4.9 and 3.1 inches), fitting wrists from about 160 to 190 mm (6.3 to 7.5 inches). Outside that range, buy short or long rather than punching extra holes, because a strap fastened at the very end of its travel wears out at that point first.

Spring bars are quoted as length by diameter. Length must match the lug width exactly. Diameter is commonly around 1.5 mm on dress watches and 1.8 mm on sports watches, with heavier bars of 2 mm and up on dive watches, where the standard requires the attachment to survive a pull test. Fitting an undersized bar is the most common self-inflicted watch loss there is: it seats, it looks right, and it shears under a knock.

The mistake people make

The common error is buying straps for how they look in a photograph and discovering the practical constraint afterward. Leather on a watch worn to the gym. Nylon under a suit. A heavy bracelet on a wrist that is already at its limit for lug-to-lug. Each is a mismatch between the attachment and the life the watch actually leads, and none of them is fixed by spending more.

The second mistake is ignoring spring bars entirely. They cost a couple of dollars each, they are the single point of failure between your watch and a concrete floor, and repeated strap changes tire the spring inside them. Replace them if they look bent, if the tips are polished flat, after any hard impact, and as routine maintenance if you swap straps often. Nobody who has lost a watch this way makes the mistake twice, and the whole thing is avoidable for the price of a coffee.

Common follow-up questions

Will a NATO strap scratch my caseback?

It can, and on a polished caseback it eventually will. The nylon traps grit against the metal and the whole assembly slides slightly with every wrist movement. On a brushed steel caseback the marks are invisible in normal wear. On a polished or engraved one, or on precious metal, use a two-piece strap instead.

How long should a strap be for my wrist?

Two-piece leather straps are usually sold as a pair around 4.9 and 3.1 inches (125 and 80 mm), which suits wrists from roughly 6.3 to 7.5 inches (160 to 190 mm). Below or above that, look for short or long versions. A standard NATO is around 11 inches (280 mm) of webbing, with shorter and longer cuts available, and excess tail folds back through the keepers.

Can I put a bracelet on any watch?

Only if the lug width matches and the end links suit the case. Straight end links fit almost anything at the right width but leave visible gaps against a curved case. Fitted end links are shaped for one specific case and look far better, which is why they are usually only available from the watch manufacturer.

Is a rubber strap a better answer than any of these?

For pure water use, often yes. Fluoroelastomer rubber tolerates chlorine, salt and sunscreen, and it does not hold odor the way nylon eventually does. It is casual only, it degrades in sunlight even when unworn, and it is a two-piece attachment, so it offers none of the security a single-pass nylon strap gives you.
