Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight
The verdict
A 39 mm steel diver with an in-house COSC-certified movement, 200 m of water resistance and 70 hours of reserve, at roughly half the price of a steel Rolex diver. It fits wrists that most modern divers do not. Buy something else if you want a ceramic bezel, a date, or a slim watch.

Tudor's Black Bay Fifty-Eight is a 39 mm steel diver with no date, a domed sapphire crystal, a gilt-marked dial and a movement Tudor makes itself. The name refers to 1958, the year of reference 7924, the first Tudor divers' watch rated to 200 meters. This page describes the time-only reference 79030, which is the watch most people mean when they say Black Bay 58. The 39 mm GMT that arrived later is a different watch with a different movement, and we note where that matters.
Why 39 mm was the point
The original Black Bay of 2012 was 41 mm and about 14.8 mm tall, which put it in the same physical class as most modern Swiss divers. It sold well and it overhung a lot of wrists.
The Fifty-Eight was Tudor answering that directly. Diameter came down to 39 mm, thickness to 11.9 mm, and the lug span with it. Nothing else about the concept changed: same bezel action, same crown, same 200 m, same in-house movement family. The result was a watch that people with 16 cm (6.3 inch) wrists could wear as a daily watch rather than as a statement, and the demand that followed reshaped the rest of the industry's size charts. How it wears
Better than the numbers suggest, for two reasons. The lugs curve down hard, so the effective span across the wrist is shorter than the measurement, and the case sides are thin because the bezel carries the height. On a 16 to 17 cm wrist (about 6.3 to 6.7 inches) it sits flat with the lug tips inside the wrist edges, which is the whole point. Under about 15 cm, close to 6 inches, it is still wearable but starts to feel like a proper diver rather than a small one, and above about 19 cm (7.5 inches) the 41 mm version is the more honest fit. The bracelet is the weak link in the experience and the thing owners complain about most. It looks right, with a riveted-style profile that echoes the 1960s, but the clasp micro-adjustment on earlier examples uses fixed holes that need a tool, which is awkward for a watch that gets warm and loose over a day. Tudor's rapid-adjustment clasp has been spreading through the Black Bay range, so check which clasp is fitted to the specific watch in front of you rather than assuming. The MT5402, and living with it
The MT5402 is Tudor's own caliber, not a modified Swiss ebauche, and its priorities are visible. A large single barrel gives 70 hours, meaning you can take the watch off on Friday evening and it is still running on Monday morning. The balance is free-sprung with a traversing bridge, which is more stable under shock and easier to regulate precisely than a regulator index, and the balance spring is silicon, so magnetism is a non-issue in ordinary life. It hacks and it hand winds.
COSC certifies the bare movement at minus 4 to plus 6 seconds a day. Tudor then publishes a tighter figure of minus 2 to plus 4 for the watch once it is cased, which is its own claim rather than an outside one. In practice a healthy MT5402 usually settles within a couple of seconds a day either side, and it holds that rate deep into the reserve because the barrel is oversized for the job.
Finishing is industrial. There is no display back, the bridges are sandblasted, and Tudor spent the money on the barrel and the balance instead of on anglage. That is a defensible choice at the price, and our guide to movement finishing explains what you are giving up.
The METAS question across the Black Bay range
Tudor has been migrating the Black Bay line to Master Chronometer certification, which is the eight-part protocol run on the finished watch by the Swiss federal metrology institute, covering rate, magnetism to 15,000 gauss, water resistance and power reserve delivery. The Black Bay Ceramic was the first Tudor to carry it. The 41 mm Black Bay followed with caliber MT5602-U, and the 39 mm Black Bay 58 GMT with caliber MT5450-U.
The time-only Fifty-Eight has not made that move. It remains COSC certified with Tudor's own cased-watch figure on top. That is not a scandal, and the practical difference in daily rate is small, but it is a genuine gap: the same brand now sells a 39 mm watch with an independently certified magnetic and rate result, and this one does not have it. If the certificate matters to you, look at the dial. Tudor prints Master Chronometer on the watches that carry it, and a caliber suffix of U marks the certified versions.
What is wrong with it
The aluminum bezel insert is the specification most obviously behind its rivals. It fades in sunlight and marks easily, where a ceramic insert like the one on the Seamaster Diver 300M does neither. Tudor chose aluminum for the vintage look and it is a real trade, not a cost saving alone.
There is no date, which for many buyers is a feature and for some is the reason to buy the 41 mm instead. The lume is applied to a gilt-toned dial that reads slightly warm rather than crisp white, which some find beautiful and others find muddy.
Height is the other honest criticism. Tudor shrank the case but not the movement, so 11.9 mm on a 39 mm no-date diver is more than the design implies, and thinner watches exist at the price. Availability has also been intermittent: the Fifty-Eight is one of the few Tudor references where authorized dealers have run waiting lists, which is a market condition rather than a property of the watch.
What it costs, new and used
Indicative US list figures, quoted before sales tax, which move with market and discounting and which differ in other countries with local tax, import duty and retail practice. The Fifty-Eight launched in 2018 at about $3,425 on the bracelet and $3,150 on a strap, and list prices have risen since; expect roughly $4,725 on the bracelet and $4,375 on a strap. Pre-owned examples of the standard black reference generally trade close to or a little below list depending on condition and completeness, and the discontinued colors move independently of that. Running cost is low for the category. Tudor does not impose an intermediate service to keep the five-year warranty alive, a full overhaul at a Tudor service center is an indicative $550 to $800, and the practical interval for a modern automatic like this is driven by how the watch is behaving rather than by the calendar. The alternatives, and who should buy which
- Tudor Black Bay 41 with caliber MT5602-U. Two millimeters wider, a date, and Master Chronometer certification. The right answer for a larger wrist or for a buyer who wants the certificate.
- Tudor Pelagos 39. Titanium, ceramic bezel, and the tool-watch specification the Fifty-Eight trades away for looks. Less charm, more capability.
- Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. Roughly a quarter more money for a ceramic bezel, 300 m, a display back and METAS certification, in a case that is 3 mm wider and 3 mm longer. A different watch for a different wrist.
- Rolex Submariner. Roughly twice the price for a ceramic bezel, a date, a tighter published rate and a 41 mm case. The comparison people actually make, and the one the Fifty-Eight was designed to make awkward.
- Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. Not a rival on function, but frequently the other watch on the shortlist at the step above. Chronograph, hand wound, 50 m.
Buy the Fifty-Eight if your wrist is between roughly 15 and 18 cm (6 to 7 inches), if you want one watch that handles a pool, a desk and a suit, and if you would rather have 70 hours of reserve than a ceramic bezel. Skip it if you need a date, if you want the thinnest possible watch, or if the Master Chronometer certificate is something you would keep thinking about. Tudor sits close enough to its sister brand that the comparison is worth making before you commit.

Is the Black Bay Fifty-Eight a Master Chronometer?
The time-only Fifty-Eight, reference 79030, is COSC certified rather than METAS certified. Tudor has been rolling Master Chronometer calibers through the Black Bay line since the Black Bay Ceramic, and the 39 mm Black Bay 58 GMT uses one. The simplest check is the dial: Tudor prints Master Chronometer on watches that carry it. If the dial does not say it, the watch does not have it.
Is 39 mm too small for a man's wrist?
No. Forty-two millimeters is a recent fashion, not a standard. On wrists between about 15 and 18 cm (6 to 7 inches) a 39 mm case with a roughly 47 mm lug span sits inside the wrist edges, which is what makes a watch look deliberate rather than borrowed. Above about 19 cm it starts to read small, and the 41 mm Black Bay is the more proportionate choice.
Can I dive with it?
It has the equipment: 200 m rating, a screw-down crown, a unidirectional 60-minute bezel and strong lume. Tudor does not market it as an ISO 6425 certified divers' watch in the way it does the Pelagos, so the 200 m is a pressure rating rather than a fitness-for-purpose certificate. For recreational diving it is entirely adequate. Have it pressure tested before the first trip.
Why is it 11.9 mm thick when it is only 39 mm across?
Because the MT5402 is a tall movement with a large barrel to deliver 70 hours. Tudor shrank the diameter without shrinking the caliber, so height stayed. The domed crystal adds to the number without adding to how it feels, and the case sides are slim, so in practice it wears thinner than 11.9 mm reads. It is still not a watch that hides under a tight cuff.
