In-house movement
Definition
A movement designed and manufactured by the brand whose name is on the dial, rather than bought in from an outside supplier.

An in-house movement is a caliber designed and manufactured by the company whose name appears on the dial, rather than bought in finished from a specialist supplier such as ETA, Sellita, Miyota or Seiko Instruments. It is a statement about who owns the design and who did the work. It is not a technical grade, no standards body defines the term, and nobody audits the claim.
Why it matters
A brand that controls its own caliber can shape the movement around the watch instead of the other way round: put the crown where the design wants it, add a complication no supplier offers, choose its own frequency and power reserve. It also buys independence. When Swatch Group moved to reduce supply of ETA movements to outside customers, a process negotiated with the Swiss competition commission COMCO, several brands responded by developing calibers of their own and Sellita grew by supplying alternatives. That obligation to keep supplying outside customers finally expired on 31 December 2019.
There is a craft argument too. A movement drawn from a blank sheet can be laid out and decorated as a single design rather than dressed up after the fact.
The spectrum of integration
Four real examples show how wide the word stretches. Rolex designs and assembles movements at Bienne, makes cases, bracelets and its own gold alloys at Plan-les-Ouates, dials at Chene-Bourg, and its Parachrom hairspring in a niobium and zirconium alloy of its own. Seiko makes hairsprings, mainsprings, quartz oscillators, luminous compound, cases and dials. NOMOS introduced its swing system in 2014, covering escape wheel, pallet lever, balance and balance spring, which is the expensive part almost nobody makes. Tudor's MT calibers are built by Kenissi in Le Locle, founded in 2016, which also supplies Breitling, Norqain and Fortis. All four are called in-house, and only the last shares a factory with competitors.
Common misconceptions
In-house does not mean more accurate. Chronometer certification is awarded to individual movements against measured rate limits, and a great many certified movements come from third-party suppliers.
In-house does not mean easier to live with. A Sellita SW200 or an ETA 2892 can be serviced by any competent watchmaker and parts are ordinary. A low-volume proprietary caliber may mean posting the watch to the brand's own service center and paying its prices for the life of the watch.
Nor does it mean everything is made under one roof. Hairsprings, jewels, mainsprings and screws come from specialists for almost every brand. Vertical integration is a spectrum, not a badge.
What it costs to own
This is where the label reaches your wallet. A widely supplied caliber goes to any competent independent watchmaker, with parts in the ordinary supply chain and a turnaround usually measured in weeks. A restricted proprietary caliber usually goes back to the brand, because many manufacturers limit spare parts to their own network, and the wait commonly runs from six weeks to several months. The prices diverge with it: a full service on a three-hand automatic at an independent runs roughly $250 to $500, against about $795 to $1,100 at Omega and $800 to $1,200 at Rolex. How to read the claim
Ask what was actually done. A supplier base with a signed rotor and a decorated bridge is not an in-house movement, however often it is sold as "manufacture". Look for a caliber number the brand will name, a stated production location, and a clear service policy.
