Breitling Navitimer B01 Chronograph
The verdict
A serious in-house chronograph carrying the most legible piece of analog computing ever fitted to a watch. The B01 caliber is genuinely good: column wheel, 70 hour reserve, chronometer certified. The costs are real too: a thick case, a busy dial, only 30 m of water resistance, and a service bill around a thousand dollars every few years. If you want a chronograph you can swim in, look elsewhere.

The Navitimer is a pilot's chronograph with a circular slide rule built into the bezel and the dial flange. Breitling developed it in 1952 and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association adopted it two years later, which is why early examples carry the AOPA wing on the dial. It has been in production, in various forms, ever since. The current version is the Navitimer B01 Chronograph, which pairs that design with Breitling's own integrated chronograph caliber rather than a bought-in or modular movement.
It is a dense watch to look at: three sub-dials, a date aperture, a chapter of small numerals around the dial edge and another around a rotating bezel. That density is the point, and the main reason people bounce off it.
How the slide rule actually works
There are two logarithmic scales. The outer one is on the rotating bezel and turns in either direction. The inner one is fixed, printed around the edge of the dial. Because both scales are logarithmic, turning the bezel to set any one number opposite any other fixes a ratio, and from that moment every other pair of numbers facing each other around the dial expresses the same ratio. That single sentence is the whole instrument.
In practice that gives you four things:
- Multiplication and division. Set one factor against the index, which is the marker at 10, then read the answer against the other factor. Decimal places are your problem, not the watch's: 24 and 240 and 2.4 occupy the same position.
- Rate problems. Anything of the form quantity per hour. Set the rate against the 60 marker, and every reading around the dial then pairs a number of minutes with the quantity used in that time. Fuel burn against flight time is the classic case, and it works identically for a printing press or a drip line.
- Unit conversion. The scales carry markers for statute miles, nautical miles and kilometers, plus positions for liters and gallons. Once the bezel is set, the whole conversion table is readable at once rather than one value at a time.
- Percentages and proportions. A fixed ratio is a fixed ratio, so a currency rate or a discount behaves the same way as a fuel burn.
Precision is roughly two or three significant figures, which is what a slide rule has always offered and is adequate for the problems it was built for. It is a different tool from a tachymeter bezel, which only converts elapsed time into a rate over a known distance; our tachymeter calculator does that in one screen.

The B01 caliber
Breitling launched caliber 01 at the end of the 2000s, when the supply of third-party Swiss movements was tightening and several brands decided to build their own. It is an integrated chronograph: the timing mechanism is part of the movement's architecture rather than a module added on top of a time-only base. That shows up in three places you can notice.
The chronograph is switched by a column wheel, a slotted vertical wheel that routes the levers. Breitling states this explicitly. A column wheel gives the pushers a defined, crisp action instead of the mushy travel a cam-switched chronograph often has. The coupling is vertical rather than lateral, which is why the chronograph seconds hand starts without the tiny stutter that lateral clutches produce and why it can be left running without measurable cost to the rate. And the power reserve is about 70 hours, so the watch survives a weekend in a drawer and is still correct on Monday.
The caliber is chronometer certified, which means each movement passed the independent Swiss test rather than a factory self-declaration. In practice a healthy B01 runs within a few seconds a day, and the chronograph reads to a quarter of a second with a 30 minute and a 12 hour counter. How it wears
This is a large, thick watch and no amount of good design hides 13.7 mm. It is a cuff-catching thickness, and on the bracelet the 43 sits high enough to catch a desk edge. The lugs are short relative to the case, which helps, but Breitling publishes no lug to lug figure for any of the three sizes, so measure a real one before committing.
Practical guidance by wrist: below about 17 cm (6.7 in), take the 41. Between 17 and 18.5 cm (6.7 to 7.3 in) the 43 is the natural size and the one most people end up with. The 46 is a specialist choice and looks it. All three are within half a millimeter of the same height, so going smaller buys you width, not slimness. Legibility depends heavily on which dial you choose. A high-contrast dial with clearly separated sub-dials reads quickly; a layout that repeats the same tone in the slide rule ring does not. Look at the real dial in daylight rather than a product photograph.
What is wrong with it
Three real compromises, in order of how much they will bother you.
Thirty meters of water resistance. Breitling lists the crown as non screw-locked with two gaskets. That is a rain-and-hand-washing rating, not a swimming one, on a watch costing about $9,500. Price buys nothing here: the Nomos Tangente at a quarter of the money carries a comparable rating, because neither watch was designed to be sealed.
Thickness and weight. Nearly 14 mm on a 43 mm case, plus a bracelet, makes for a watch you are aware of all day. Some owners like that. Others sell within a year.
Running cost. Breitling recommends a maintenance service every two years and a complete service every four to six. A complete service on an integrated chronograph at a brand service center typically lands between $700 and $1,200, in line with our answer on what a watch service costs. Breitling publishes a maximum price list searchable by reference number, which is more transparency than most competitors offer; look yours up before you buy. Parts access for in-house calibers is restricted, so realistically this is a watch you send back to the brand.
What it costs, new and used
Indicative and moving: a steel Navitimer B01 chronograph lists at around $9,500 in 41, 43 or 46 mm, on leather or bracelet. US list is quoted before sales tax, which varies by state, and outside the US the local number moves with tax, import duty and how Breitling distributes, so check it where you are buying. Special dials sit slightly above. Gold and platinum versions run from roughly $25,000 to over $50,000 and are a different conversation.
Used, a recent steel B01 with box and papers typically trades in the $5,700 to $7,100 band, a first-owner loss in the order of 25 to 40 percent. Older Navitimers with modular movements sit lower and cost less to service. The alternatives, and when each is the better answer
If you want a serious chronograph without the slide rule, the Omega Speedmaster Professional and the Zenith Chronomaster line are the obvious comparisons: the Speedmaster is thinner and hand wound, the Zenith times to a tenth of a second. Both have simpler dials to read.
If it is specifically the slide rule you want, Sinn has built pilot's chronographs with the same computing bezel for decades at a fraction of the price, using supplied movements. You lose the manufacture caliber and the chronometer certificate, and you keep the instrument.
If the appeal is the aviation history rather than the mechanism, a pre-owned Navitimer with a modular caliber gives you the same dial at roughly half the money, with a lower service bill and a shorter reserve. Buy it if you want a chronograph whose complication is genuinely usable, you have the wrist for a 13.7 mm case, and the service schedule is a cost you have already accepted. Buy something else if you want one watch for everything, if you swim, or if you want a dial you can read without looking twice.
Common follow-up questions
Do people actually use the slide rule?
Rarely for flying, occasionally for everything else. No pilot needs it now, and no airline would accept it as a primary instrument. What it is still good for is any ratio problem you would otherwise reach for a phone to solve: currency at a fixed rate, unit conversion, fuel consumption, a tip, a percentage. It takes about ten minutes to learn and it works without power, which is a small pleasure rather than a serious tool.
Why is a $9,500 watch only rated to 30 meters?
Because the crown does not screw down and the case was never designed to be sealed for immersion. Breitling states both plainly in its own specification. Thirty meters is a rain and hand-washing rating: it means the case passed a static pressure test, not that you can swim in it. The Navitimer is a flight instrument by design lineage, and cockpits are dry.
Which size should I take?
The 41 for most wrists, the 43 if you are above about 18 cm (7.1 in) and want the dial to read easily, the 46 only if you are certain. All three are within half a millimeter of the same thickness, so the choice is purely width. The 43 also has the most straightforward numbering on the slide rule scales at arm's length, which is the practical argument for it over the 41.
Is the B01 worth paying for over a modular chronograph?
Mechanically, yes. An integrated chronograph built around a column wheel starts and stops crisply, keeps its dial layout symmetrical, and adds less height than a module stacked on a time-only base. The 70 hour reserve is a real convenience, and the chronometer certification is independently tested rather than self-declared. Whether that is worth the price gap over an ETA or Sellita chronograph is a separate question about how much you value the mechanism itself.
