Master Chronometer

Definition

A certification run by METAS, the Swiss federal metrology institute, that tests the finished cased watch against eight criteria including a 0 to plus 5 seconds a day rate and function in a 15,000 gauss magnetic field.

A chronometer certificate from COSC applies to a bare movement, tested before it is cased. Master Chronometer certification, introduced by Omega and METAS in 2015, applies to the finished watch, and it starts from a COSC-certified movement rather than replacing that step. METAS is the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, the national measurement authority, so the testing body is a government laboratory rather than a trade association or the brand itself.

The eight tests

The program runs over ten days on the assembled watch and covers eight criteria. Two check that the movement, and then the complete watch, keep functioning while exposed to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss. A third checks the daily rate after that exposure. A fourth is the headline figure: average daily precision of 0 to plus 5 seconds a day, measured across six positions and at two states of wind, full and around a third remaining. The remaining four cover the deviation of rate between those two wind states, the deviation across positions, water resistance, and power reserve.

Two details are easy to miss. The accuracy criterion is asymmetric on purpose: a watch that runs very slightly fast is easier to live with than one that loses. And testing at a third of wind is a real-world condition COSC does not check, because that is where a mechanical watch usually times worst.

The magnetic requirement

15,000 gauss is 1.5 tesla. For scale, the long-standing antimagnetic threshold in ISO 764 is 4,800 amperes per meter, about 60 gauss, and the historic Rolex Milgauss was named for 1,000. The METAS figure is not an increment on that, it is two orders of magnitude beyond it, and it cannot be reached with a soft-iron inner case. It requires non-ferrous components through the regulating organ: a silicon hairspring and amagnetic escapement parts. Why testing the cased watch matters

Casing a movement changes it. Dial and hands add load, the case can transmit shock differently, and a magnetically vulnerable movement in a protective case behaves differently from the same movement on a bench. Testing after casing measures the object the customer actually receives.

The tolerances are the least interesting column. What separates them is what was inside the timing machine and who was holding the certificate. A tighter number tested in-house is a different kind of claim from a looser one tested by a national laboratory, and neither is automatically better. How to check a certificate

Each certified watch gets its own numbered record, and the individual test results can be looked up online using the number supplied with the watch. This is the practical value of the scheme for a buyer: it is the most independently checkable accuracy claim in the industry, and it survives a change of owner. On a used Omega it is worth doing, because a watch presented as Master Chronometer that has no retrievable record is a watch worth asking more questions about. The scheme is open to any brand, and Tudor is the only other one currently using it.

What it does not tell you

It is not a rating of finishing, materials or value; it is a set of pass or fail measurements. It does not test the watch at multiple temperatures the way COSC does, so it is not a superset of the COSC test, it is a different slice through the problem. Above all it does not predict the rate on your wrist: no scheme tests a watch being worn, and posture, activity and how fully you wind it all move the number. See what counts as good accuracy.

The naming causes its own trouble. Omega used Master Co-Axial from 2013 for its own 15,000 gauss standard before METAS existed, and Co-Axial Master Chronometer for the certified calibers afterwards. A watch marked Chronometer alone is COSC, not METAS. And Master Chronometer says nothing about whether the watch is a chronograph, which is a separate word for a separate thing.
