A 42 mm automatic diver with a ceramic dial and bezel, 300 m of water resistance and a movement tested by a federal laboratory at 0 to plus 5 seconds a day. It is capable, well finished and visually loud. Buy something else if you want a quiet watch, or one that slides under a cuff.

The Seamaster Diver 300M is Omega's mainstream bezel-equipped diver: a 42 mm steel case, a screw-down crown, a date at six, a unidirectional ceramic bezel and a sapphire display back. The design was reworked in 2018, and the version described here is that one. The skeleton hands, the wave dial and the valve on the case flank are all inherited from the 1993 original, which means this is a watch with a strong accent. You either like it or you should buy something else.

The helium escape valve, honestly
The valve at ten o'clock is real engineering solving a real problem for a very small number of people.
Commercial saturation divers do not surface between dives. They live for days or weeks inside a pressurized habitat or transfer chamber breathing a helium-oxygen mixture, because helium is less narcotic and less dense than nitrogen at depth. Helium is also a very small atom. Over days at pressure it works its way past case gaskets and into the watch until the inside of the case is at chamber pressure too. Nothing bad happens while the diver stays down. The problem comes during decompression, which can take days: the ambient pressure falls, the helium trapped inside the case does not vent as quickly as it entered, and the pressure differential can push the crystal out of the case. The helium escape valve is a one-way relief path that lets the excess out before that happens.
It is worth saying that the valve is a design choice rather than a requirement. Several manufacturers build saturation-rated divers with no valve at all, using a monobloc case and gasket geometry that resists helium ingress in the first place, on the argument that the best way to vent helium is not to let it in. Both approaches work. Omega's version is a manually operated conical valve, which the company states can be opened while the watch is submerged, unlike the screw-down valves used on earlier Seamasters. How it wears
This is a big watch and the specification says so plainly. Forty-two millimeters is only part of it; 49.90 mm lug to lug is the number that decides whether it fits, and it is a full 2.4 mm longer than a Speedmaster Moonwatch despite the same nominal diameter. Below roughly a 17 cm (6.7 in) wrist the lugs start to reach the edge, and below 16 cm (6.3 in) most people will find it overhangs. At 13.56 mm it is also tall, and the ceramic bezel gives it visual mass that a slab-sided watch of the same height would not have. The bracelet is a genuine strength: it tapers, the links are solid, and the clasp carries a diver extension that folds out over a wetsuit sleeve. Perceived weight on the wrist is moderate for the size once the bracelet is sized properly, which matters more than the 194 g figure suggests. The movement, and living with it
Caliber 8800 is Omega's workhorse automatic: bidirectional winding, a free-sprung balance with a silicon spring, a Co-Axial escapement and 55 hours of reserve. It hacks, it hand winds, and the date is quickset. We cover the architecture in detail on the caliber 8800 page.
The certification is the part worth understanding. The bare movement is first tested to chronometer standard, then the finished, cased watch goes through the eight-part Master Chronometer protocol run by the Swiss federal metrology institute, which sets the daily rate at 0 to plus 5 seconds and confirms the watch still runs after exposure to a 15,000 gauss field. That last figure is not about your commute. It demonstrates that the regulating organ contains nothing ferromagnetic, which is also why the watch can have a display back with no soft iron shield. Servicing: Omega guidance for its mechanical watches sits in the five to eight year band, and a brand overhaul on a time-and-date automatic runs an indicative $800 to $1,100. What it is good at
It is genuinely capable underwater, and unusually well finished for a working diver: ceramic that will not fade, a bezel with clean action, and lume that reads properly at depth and after dark. It is accurate to a number somebody else certified, which very few watches at any price can say. It resists magnetism to a level that makes the question uninteresting. And it is easy to buy, which is not a small thing: Omega sells current production through authorized dealers, boutiques and its own online store in most markets, so getting one is a question of stock rather than standing.
What is wrong with it
The design is loud. Skeleton hands, a heavily textured dial, a date window that cuts into the wave pattern, and a lot of polished steel on a tool watch. That is a matter of taste, but it is the most common reason people who admire the specification buy something else.
The size is a real constraint. Omega offers the time-and-date Diver 300M only at 42 mm, with no 39 or 40 mm version, so a smaller wrist has to leave the family rather than pick a size within it.
The polished center links and case flanks pick up hairlines quickly, and ceramic bezels do not scratch but they do chip if you hit a doorframe hard enough, and a chipped ceramic insert is a replacement rather than a repair. Finally, the 3.5 Hz beat and 55 hour reserve are competitive rather than leading: several rivals at lower prices now publish 70 hours or more, which matters if you rotate watches and dislike resetting.
What it costs, new and used
Indicative US dollar figures, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state. They move with discounting and availability, and outside the US the local number moves with tax, import duty and how Omega distributes, so check it where you are buying. The steel version on the steel bracelet has generally sat in the region of $5,600 to $6,200 new, with rubber strap versions a few hundred less and two-tone and titanium versions above. Pre-owned examples of the current generation typically trade meaningfully below list, often in the $3,900 to $5,000 band depending on age, condition and completeness. Pre-2018 41 mm Seamasters sit lower still and are one of the better value entry points into the brand, provided you check which caliber is inside.
Over ten years, budget one overhaul, a pressure test or two, and possibly a bracelet clasp adjustment. Any statutory consumer rights sitting on top of it depend on the country you bought in, so check your own.
The alternatives, and who should buy which
- Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight. Around twenty percent cheaper, 39 mm, 200 m, 70 hours of reserve and a far quieter design. It gives up the ceramic bezel, the display back and the METAS certificate. For most wrists it is the better-fitting watch.
- Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. The same certification standard from the same brand, with a chronograph instead of a dive bezel and only 50 m of water resistance. Choose by what you do, not by badge.
- A Seamaster Diver 300M of the previous 41 mm generation, pre-owned. Smaller, cheaper and still a serious diver. Read the pre-owned guide and confirm the movement and the service history.
- Rolex Submariner. The direct rival at close to twice the money, with a tighter published rate, a harder-wearing bracelet and a buying process that may involve a waiting list. Better made in the details, less interesting to look at.
- A Seiko or Citizen diver certified to ISO 6425. A fraction of the cost, with the DIVER'S marking the Swiss rarely apply. If the diving is the point and the finishing is not, this is the honest answer, and our dive, field and dress comparison covers what you actually need.
Buy the Diver 300M if you want one watch that swims, survives, keeps a certified rate and looks like it means it. Skip it if your wrist is under about 16.5 cm (6.5 in), if you want a diver that disappears under a shirt cuff, or if the wave dial and skeleton hands are something you are talking yourself into rather than actually wanting.
Common follow-up questions
Will I ever need to use the helium escape valve?
Almost certainly not. It matters only if you spend days inside a pressurized habitat or diving bell breathing a helium-rich mixture, which is commercial saturation work, not recreational diving. On any normal dive, swim or shower the valve does nothing at all. Leave it closed, rinse the watch in fresh water afterwards, and treat it as a piece of the case rather than a control.
Is 300 meters more than anyone needs?
Yes, in the sense that no unassisted human dives to 300 m. That is not the point of the rating. Pressure ratings are static bench figures with margin built in, and a watch that certifies at 300 m has thicker gaskets, a screw-down crown and a caseback that stay sealed after years of aging, knocks and temperature swings. The margin is what you are buying.
How does the 42 mm compare with the older 41 mm Seamaster?
The pre-2018 Seamaster Diver 300M was 41 mm, with a printed wave dial, an aluminum or ceramic bezel depending on year, and caliber 2500 or 8800 depending on reference. The current watch is 42 mm, ceramic throughout, and Master Chronometer certified across the range. The older one wears smaller and costs considerably less used. Check the caliber on any listing.
What accuracy should I expect day to day?
METAS certifies the cased watch at 0 to plus 5 seconds a day averaged across the protocol. In ordinary wear, most owners see something between running on time and gaining a few seconds a day, and gaining is normal by design: the window forbids losing. If yours loses time consistently, that is a reason to have it looked at rather than something to accept.
