Anglage

Definition

The bevelled, polished edge applied to the borders of movement components, also called chamfering or bevelling, and one of the clearest markers of hand finishing.

Anglage is the finishing operation that cuts away the sharp border where the top surface of a movement component meets its side, leaving a narrow bevel that is then polished to a mirror. It is applied to bridges, plates, levers, springs and the spokes of wheels. The bevel is usually cut at roughly 45 degrees, and it has a functional origin (a sharp edge holds burrs and chips) but survives today mostly as a display of skill.

The physical reality is smaller than photographs suggest. On a wristwatch bridge the bevel is a few tenths of a millimeter wide, so what you see through an exhibition caseback is not a surface but a line of light tracing the outline of the part. Because a mirror bevel returns light in one direction, it flares white as the watch tilts and goes dark a moment later, which is why anglage reads at normal viewing distance when finer operations do not. On the best work the same treatment is applied to edges nobody will see, such as the undersides of bridges.

How it is done

A machined chamfer can be milled in seconds. Traditional anglage is filed by hand, then smoothed with progressively finer abrasives and finally burnished with gentian wood or boxwood loaded with diamond or diamantine paste. The finisher works toward a bevel of constant width that follows every curve of the part.

The bench sequence runs roughly: deburr the edge, cut the bevel with a fine file held at a constant angle, refine it with abrasive paper on a stick, then polish with a wooden peg charged with successively finer diamond paste until every scratch from the previous grade has gone. Each grade has to erase the marks left by the one before it, which is where the hours go. The work is done before plating, so a slip at the last stage scraps a part that already carries every earlier operation.

Time is the honest measure of the difference. A machine bevel is one pass of a rotating cutter; hand anglage on one bridge with a complicated outline is measured in hours, and a full set of parts runs into days of bench time. That labor, not the material, is what you pay for.

What good looks like

Three things separate expensive work from cheap work, all visible under a loupe. The first is the internal angle: where the outline of a bridge turns inwards to a sharp point, a rotating cutter cannot reach, so a machine leaves a small radius. A crisp inward corner has almost always been made by hand.

The second is consistency of width. The bevel should stay the same width around the whole perimeter, including through tight curves.

The third is the polish. A properly finished bevel behaves like a mirror, throwing a bright line that flashes as the watch tilts. A gray, satin or slightly rounded bevel has been tumbled or brushed rather than polished.

Reading it through a caseback

Anglage tracks price in fairly predictable bands, quoted here as indicative US figures before sales tax. At a few hundred dollars there is usually no bevelling at all, which is the right call: the money went into the case and the dial. In the low four figures you get a machined bevel, often brushed rather than polished. In the middle four figures a machine bevel with a real polish is normal, and the corners still show the cutter's radius. Hand anglage with sharp interior angles is a five-figure feature. How it differs from nearby terms

Anglage, chamfering and bevelling name the same operation in different registers. The neighbors are not the same thing. Perlage and cotes de Geneve are surface textures applied on a jig in seconds, so they say little about a finishing budget. Black polishing, or poli noir, is a flat mirror produced on a lap on small steel parts, not an edge treatment, and is effectively hand work only. Zaratsu polishing is a case operation and has nothing to do with the movement.

Common misconceptions

Anglage is decoration, not performance. A movement with immaculate bevels does not keep better time than a plain one, and many robust calibers carry none at all. Hand and machine work also sit on a spectrum: much modern anglage is machine cut and hand finished, which is honest work rather than deception.

Two claims deserve care. Hand-finished is not the same as hand-cut, and both phrases are used loosely. And the count of interior angles on a bridge is now a marketing number, quoted the way horsepower is: a real proxy for labor, but only if the angles are genuinely sharp and polished into the corner, which is what a loupe settles.
