The verdict
The PRX is a 1970s-style integrated bracelet watch in 316L steel with sapphire and 100 meter water resistance, sold as a Swiss quartz and as a Powermatic 80 automatic with an 80 hour reserve. It is the cheapest credible way into the integrated bracelet look. Buy something else if you want to change straps freely or need a rate guarantee.

The PRX is Tissot's revival of a 1978 case shape: a thin, flat, tonneau-inflected steel case with a bracelet that grows out of it rather than being attached to it. Tissot relaunched it in 2021 as a quartz watch, added the automatic later that year, and has since extended the family into 35 mm, a chronograph and a digital version.
The reason it matters is arithmetic. The integrated bracelet sports watch is a category defined by watches costing five figures. The PRX puts a competent, Swiss made, sapphire-fronted version of the same idea on the shelf for well under a thousand dollars. What you are buying is the format, not a substitute for the watches that made the format famous.
Two watches with one name
Listings often say "PRX" and stop there, which is unhelpful, because the quartz and the automatic differ in price, thickness, caseback, running cost and daily behavior. Check the reference before you buy.

The Powermatic 80
The Powermatic 80 is Swatch Group's long reserve automatic, built on ETA architecture descended from the 2824-2. The change that defines it is a reduced beat rate. Slowing the balance means each swing costs less energy, and that is most of how a single barrel gets to 80 hours from the roughly 38 to 42 hours a conventional caliber of this size delivers.
Eighty hours is the specification that changes daily life. A watch with a two day reserve taken off on Friday evening is dead on Monday morning. A watch with three days plus is still running. That is not a small convenience, and it is the main reason to prefer this caliber over the older ETA and Sellita movements that populate the same price bracket.
Current versions use a Nivachron balance spring, a titanium-based alloy developed inside the Swatch Group and introduced across its brands from around 2018, intended to improve resistance to magnetic fields and shock compared with older ferrous alloys. The movement hand winds and it has hacking seconds, so you can stop the second hand and set the watch precisely.
The molded regulator, and what it means
The Powermatic 80 does not use the conventional metal regulator index found on a standard ETA 2824. Its regulating assembly is a molded synthetic component, adjusted at the factory rather than intended for routine field adjustment. This is the single most consequential difference between this caliber and the movement it descends from, and it rarely appears in a product description.
Tissot does not publish a rate figure in seconds per day for standard PRX references, so there is no promise to hold it to. Treat anything within about ten seconds a day, consistently, as normal for the caliber, and measure yours over a week rather than judging it overnight. How it wears
Two things make the PRX wear smaller than its diameter suggests. There are no protruding lugs, so the case ends where the bracelet begins, and the case is flat rather than domed. The 40 mm sits on a wrist roughly the way a conventional 38 mm with short lugs would, and there is no overhang risk from long lugs.
The 35 mm is not simply a shrunk 40 mm. It is the same thickness in the Powermatic 80 version, about 10.9 mm, which on a 35 mm case reads as noticeably chunkier in proportion. It also weighs about 104 g against 138 g. On wrists below roughly 16 cm (6.3 inches) the 35 mm is the more comfortable watch and the 40 mm the more balanced-looking one, and the honest advice is to try both. Under a cuff the quartz is the better behaved of the two by about half a millimeter, which sounds trivial and is noticeable on a flat-cased watch that is meant to slide.
The integrated bracelet, and what it costs you
The bracelet is the design. It tapers sharply from the case, it is brushed on the top surfaces with polished flanks, and it closes with a butterfly clasp with pushers.
The constraint follows directly. Because the first link is shaped to the case rather than sitting between lugs, you cannot fit a normal strap. The gap between the case flanks is 12 mm on the 40 mm and 11 mm on the 35 mm, and those are not strap sizes anyone stocks. Tissot sells quick-release leather and rubber straps profiled to the case, and third parties make PRX-specific ones, but the universe of options is small compared with a watch that takes any 20 mm strap. The clasp is the weaker part of the design. There is no micro-adjustment on the fly, so sizing is done by removing links and you accept whatever fit that lands on. On a warm day a steel bracelet you cannot loosen by two millimeters is a genuine irritation.
What it is good at, and what is not
Good at: the finish for the money. The case and bracelet are properly brushed and polished, the dial patterns are crisp, the sapphire is standard rather than an upgrade, and 100 meters of water resistance means you do not have to think about rain, washing up or a swim. Swiss made here is backed by group-owned movement supply, which is the reason the price works at all.
Not good at: individuality, because the PRX is now extremely common; strap versatility, as above; and regulation, as above. The Powermatic 80 versions have no published rate specification and are not chronometer certified, so the quality of your particular example is a lottery within a fairly wide band. The polished flanks scratch quickly, and on an integrated bracelet those scratches are hard to refinish without changing the shape of the case.
What it costs
Indicative US list figures, quoted before sales tax and moving with discounting, distribution and availability; retail in other countries varies with local tax and import duty, so check the current number where you are buying. New at authorized retail, the quartz 40 mm typically sits around $375 to $450 and the Powermatic 80 versions around $725 to $825, with special dials and finishes above that. Used examples in good condition commonly trade at roughly 55 to 75 percent of new, and the model's ubiquity keeps that band stable rather than volatile.
Over ten years, the quartz costs you two or three battery changes with seal replacement. The Powermatic 80 should be budgeted for at least one full overhaul, which at Swiss group service pricing is a significant fraction of the purchase price, as our page on what a watch service costs sets out. The alternatives
If the integrated bracelet is not the point and you want a mechanical watch to keep, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical is a hand-wound field watch at a similar price with the same 80 hour reserve and far more strap freedom. If timekeeping is what you actually care about, the quartz PRX or even the Casio F-91W will beat any mechanical here on rate by a wide margin.

Buy the PRX if you want the flat integrated look, done properly, at a price where a scratch is survivable. Buy the quartz if you want it to be right whenever you put it on. Buy something with conventional lugs if changing straps is part of how you enjoy a watch.
Common follow-up questions
Which should I buy, the quartz or the Powermatic 80?
If you want the watch to be right when you pick it up after two weeks in a drawer, buy the quartz. It is thinner, cheaper, more accurate and needs a battery every few years. If you want a mechanical movement you can see through the caseback and you accept that it will gain or lose several seconds a day, buy the Powermatic 80. Neither is a compromise version of the other.
Can I put a normal strap on a PRX?
Not a generic one. The case has no conventional lugs. The bracelet end link is shaped to the case and the gap it fills is 12 mm on the 40 mm and 11 mm on the 35 mm, which is not a standard strap width. Tissot sells quick-release leather and rubber straps cut to the case profile, and third parties make PRX-specific straps. A straight 12 mm strap will leave visible gaps.
Can a watchmaker regulate a Powermatic 80?
It can be regulated, but not in the usual way. The regulating assembly is a molded synthetic component set at the factory rather than a conventional metal index a watchmaker nudges with a lever. Some independents will adjust one and some decline. If your example is running badly outside warranty, ask before you leave it, and expect the Swatch Group service network to be the straightforward route.
Is 100 meters enough for swimming?
Yes. Under ISO 22810 a 100 meter marking covers swimming and snorkeling, and the PRX has a screwed caseback and a sapphire crystal. It is not a dive watch: it has no rotating timing bezel and no DIVER'S marking under ISO 6425. Have the seals tested every few years if you swim in it regularly, because gaskets age whether or not the watch gets wet.
