Casio G-Shock DW-5600

The verdict

The DW-5600E is a digital resin G-Shock with 200 meter water resistance, a quartz module rated to ±15 seconds a month, and a battery Casio rates at about two years. It is genuinely hard to break and cheap enough to treat as a tool. Buy something else if you want an analog dial, solar charging or a watch a watchmaker can repair rather than replace.

The DW-5600E is the plain version of the shape most people picture when they hear G-Shock: a rounded rectangle in black resin, a negative or positive LCD, four buttons set into the case sides, and a stainless steel back held on by screws. It descends directly from the DW-5000C of 1983, and the current reference has been in production in essentially this form since 1996.

Nothing about it is decorative. There is no sapphire crystal and no attempt at finishing. What you buy is a quartz module, a battery and a case designed around one engineering problem.

How the shock resistance actually works

The usual story about G-Shock is that it is armored. It is not, or not mainly. The design principle is the opposite: the module inside is deliberately not rigidly fixed to the case.

Casio's team, led by Ibe Kikuo, spent two years and more than 200 prototypes wrapping a conventional watch in shock-absorbing material. It kept failing, because stiffening one part transferred the impact somewhere else. The solution was to suspend the module inside the housing at a limited number of contact points, so the case can deform and decelerate while the module barely moves. Casio calls it a hollow, or floating, structure, and it is still the basis of the line.

Three further details do the rest of the work on the DW-5600:

  • Urethane. The bezel and band are polyurethane, a material that absorbs energy by deforming and returning, rather than transmitting it the way steel does. The bezel is also a wear part, and it is designed to be unscrewed and replaced.
  • Recessed buttons. The four pushers sit behind raised resin walls rather than standing proud of the case. A pusher is a hole through the case wall with a gasket in it, which makes it the most vulnerable point on any watch. Setting it back means a flat impact reaches the resin first.
  • A protected crystal. The mineral glass sits below the surrounding resin lip, so the watch lands on the case before it lands on the glass.

This is shock resistance as a system rather than a coating. It is also why the square survives treatment that stops a mechanical watch: a balance wheel runs on pivots a fraction of a millimeter thick, protected only by a sprung jewel setting at each end, and a quartz module has no such pivot to break. What 200 meters means on a resin case

The number is not a depth you can go to. It is a static pressure tested under ISO 22810, and the useful translation is behavioral: 200 meters covers swimming, surf, jumping in and showering without thinking about it.

The ladder. Treat the printed figure as roughly three to four times the depth you should actually take the watch to, and treat anything under 10 bar as not for swimming.

What makes the rating hold on a plastic watch is the same thing that makes it hold on a steel one. There are three sealed openings: the crystal, the back and the buttons. The DW-5600E has no crown at all, which removes the single most common leak path on an analog watch, and its steel back is compressed onto a gasket by screws. Resin is not a weakness here. It is dimensionally stable, it does not corrode in salt water, and it is not what fails.

What fails is the gaskets, which harden with age and heat. If you open the watch for a battery, the gaskets should be replaced and the watch pressure tested afterwards, exactly as on any other watch. How it wears

At 48.9 mm long and 42.8 mm wide the square sounds large, and it is not. The 42.8 mm figure includes the resin bezel that surrounds a much smaller display, and the 48.9 mm length is the whole watch, which is the number that actually matters for fit. That makes it comparable in footprint to a round watch of roughly 40 mm with short lugs. At 13.4 mm it is not thin, but at 53 grams it is very light, and weight matters more than thickness for comfort. The resin band is soft and takes a curve quickly. It suits wrists from about 15 cm (6 in) upward, and reads as deliberate rather than oversized on smaller wrists. Our sizing and fit guide has the general method.

The battery, and the ten year claim

The original brief for the 1983 watch was a "triple 10": survive a 10 meter fall, hold 10 bar of water pressure, and run for 10 years on one battery. That is where the ten year figure comes from, and it is worth knowing because it is repeated as though it applies to every G-Shock ever made.

It does not apply to this one. Casio rates the CR2016 in the DW-5600E at approximately two years, because module 1545 drives an electroluminescent backlight and an alarm, and those cost current. If you want to stop thinking about batteries entirely, the answer in this case shape is a solar model. The GW-M5610 adds Casio's Tough Solar charging and radio time signal reception; the GW-B5600 adds solar plus Bluetooth syncing to a phone. The plain DW-5600E has none of that, and its price reflects it.

Module replacement, and the economics of repair

A Casio digital is not repaired the way a mechanical watch is. There is no overhaul, no cleaning, no re-oiling. If the electronics fail, the service answer is to fit a new module: a single part swap, fast, but priced as a part rather than as labor.

The practical consequence is a cliff. Battery and gasket replacement is cheap, and worth doing properly at a service center so the seals are renewed and the watch is retested. A dead module on a watch that cost under $100 usually is not worth paying for, and most owners replace the watch. This is the inverse of the servicing economics of a mechanical watch, where the movement is the durable part and the case is the consumable.

What is wrong with it

The crystal is mineral glass, and it scratches. On a watch this exposed that is a real annoyance, and the DW-5600E has no sapphire option from Casio, although aftermarket replacements exist and fitting one voids the water resistance until the watch is resealed.

The EL backlight is dim and lights the panel unevenly. The band and bezel are consumables: urethane hardens and cracks with years of ultraviolet light and skin oils, faster in hot climates. Casio sells replacements, but it is a running cost. And the button interface has not changed since the 1990s: setting an alarm means holding a button until a field flashes. If that irritates you now, it will irritate you in year five.

What it costs, new and used

Indicative figures in US dollars, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state. New, the DW-5600E lists at about $70 and commonly changes hands between $55 and $80 at ordinary retail. Solar and radio versions in the same case shape are generally $140 to $220, and the metal-cased square is several times that again. Readers outside the United States should expect their own list to sit somewhere else again, because local tax, import duty and distribution are all built into it before it is published.

Used prices are close to useless at this level: a used one saves so little that the risk is rarely worth it. The alternatives

If you want the same case shape without battery changes, the solar GW-M5610 is the direct upgrade, and the GW-B5600 adds phone syncing. Both cost roughly twice as much and are the better answer if the watch will be worn daily for a decade.

If you want something smaller, lighter and cheaper that does the same timekeeping job, the Casio F-91W is the honest alternative, and it is a fraction of the price with a battery rated at around seven years. It gives up the shock structure and the 200 meter rating entirely.

If you want a mechanical watch of similar toughness in spirit, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical is the field watch answer, at roughly eight times the money and with 50 meters of water resistance rather than 200. Buy the DW-5600E if you want a watch you will never worry about, in the shape that started the category, for a price that makes damage a non-event. Do not buy it if you want an analog dial, a scratch-proof crystal, or an object that can be handed on and serviced rather than replaced.

Common follow-up questions

Is the DW-5600E solar or Bluetooth?

Neither. The DW-5600E runs on a CR2016 lithium cell and has no radio and no Bluetooth. Solar charging in the same square case is a GW prefix feature, as on the GW-M5610, which adds Tough Solar and radio time signal reception. Bluetooth phone syncing appears on GW-B references such as the GW-B5600. If a listing calls a DW model solar, the listing is wrong.

Can I dive with a 200 meter G-Shock?

Not as a certified dive watch. The DW-5600E is rated to 200 meters under the general water resistance standard, ISO 22810, which covers swimming, snorkeling and jumping into water. Scuba diving is covered by a separate standard, ISO 6425, and a watch qualified under it carries a DIVER'S marking on the dial. The DW-5600E does not. In practice many people dive with them anyway, and Casio does not endorse it.

Can the module be repaired if it fails?

Not at component level, in normal practice. Casio service replaces the whole electronic module rather than repairing the circuit inside it. That is why a failed module often costs a meaningful share of a new watch to put right, and why owners of inexpensive references usually replace the watch instead. Batteries and gaskets are a separate, much cheaper job.

Does the resin band fail before the watch does?

Usually, yes. Polyurethane hardens under ultraviolet light, heat and skin oils, and bands typically crack at the buckle holes or at the lug ends after several years, sooner in hot climates. This is expected wear rather than a defect. Casio sells replacement bands and bezels for the 5600 family as ordinary spare parts, and fitting a band is a spring bar job. Keeping a spare is cheap insurance.
