How do I wind a manual watch?
Short answer
Take the watch off, hold it in one hand, and with the crown pushed fully in turn it clockwise in short half turns between thumb and forefinger. Stop the instant you feel firm, definite resistance. That is the mainspring fully wound, and forcing past it is the one way to break something. Wind once a day, at roughly the same time.

Winding a manual watch is a ten second job that owners overthink. Take it off the wrist, leave the crown pushed all the way in, turn it clockwise in short half turns, and stop as soon as the resistance becomes firm and definite rather than smooth. That is the whole procedure.
The reason it deserves an answer at all is that a hand-wound movement has no safety mechanism. On an automatic, the mainspring's outer end is attached to a sliding bridle that slips inside the barrel wall once the spring is full, which is why you cannot overwind one. On a manual movement the outer end is anchored to the barrel wall outright. When it is full, it is full, and anything you add goes into the spring, the stem or the winding wheels.
The procedure, step by step
- Take the watch off your wrist and hold the case in your non-dominant hand. Setting or winding on the wrist loads the stem sideways.
- If the crown screws down, turn it counterclockwise until it releases and springs outward. Do not pull it further.
- Check the crown is in its neutral position, pushed fully in against the case, sometimes called position 0. This is the winding position on essentially every movement.
- Grip the crown lightly between thumb and forefinger and turn it clockwise, away from you, in short half turns rather than long sweeps.
- Release your grip between turns and let the crown reset in your fingers. You should feel and often hear a fine ratcheting.
- Keep going until the resistance changes from smooth to firm. Stop immediately.
- If the watch was fully stopped, give it a gentle horizontal shake or set the time now, which starts the balance swinging.
- If the crown screws down, push it gently against the case and turn counterclockwise first until you feel a small drop as the threads register, then turn clockwise until it seats. It never needs force.
How many turns it should take
From completely stopped, most manual watches reach full wind in roughly 20 to 40 half turns of the crown, depending on the caliber and how long the mainspring is. A watch you wind every day, before it has run down, needs far fewer, often ten to fifteen, because you are only topping up the energy the last 24 hours consumed.
Do not count turns as a substitute for feel. The turn count varies between calibers, between individual watches, and with how far the spring has unwound since you last touched it. The feel does not vary. Some watches with long power reserves, particularly those quoting eight days, take a great many turns and are genuinely tiring to wind; that is normal and not a fault.
Why a daily habit matters
A mainspring does not deliver constant torque. It pushes hardest when fully wound and progressively less as it unwinds, and once torque falls far enough, the balance swings through a smaller arc. Lower amplitude means the rate wanders, and the last few hours of any power reserve are the least accurate hours the watch will run.
Winding at the same time each morning keeps the movement in the strong, stable upper part of its reserve, where it was regulated to run. If something feels wrong
A crown that spins endlessly with no resistance and no ratcheting usually means a broken mainspring, a slipped bridle on an automatic, or a stem that has come out of engagement. A crown that feels gritty or notchy suggests dry keyless works or debris in the tube. Neither is a winding problem you can fix by trying harder, and both are cheaper to address early. One more distinction worth keeping straight: you can hand wind almost every modern automatic in exactly the same way, and it is the correct method for restarting one that has stopped. Common follow-up questions
Which way do I turn the crown?
Clockwise, meaning away from you along the top of the crown, as if the crown were the top of a wheel rolling forward. Many movements only wind in that one direction and simply freewheel the other way, so if turning produces no ratcheting sound or feel at all, reverse direction before assuming anything is wrong.
Can I wind it while wearing it?
You can, and nothing dramatic will happen, but it is a bad habit. Winding on the wrist pulls the crown sideways against the stem and the case tube, and over years that wears the tube, distorts the stem and damages a screw-down crown's threads. Ten seconds spent taking the watch off removes the whole class of problem.
What if I miss a day and it stops?
Nothing is harmed. A stopped mechanical watch is at rest, not damaged. Wind it fully, then set the time, and if it has a date make sure you avoid the danger zone around midnight when you correct the calendar. The only cost of a stopped watch is the minute it takes to restart it.
My crown has to be unscrewed first. Does that change anything?
Only the first and last steps. Unscrew it counterclockwise until it releases and springs out, wind normally in that released position, then push it gently against the case and turn counterclockwise until you feel the threads drop into register before turning clockwise to seat it. Never force a screw-down crown that has not caught its thread.
