My watch irritates my skin
Short answer
Use the timing. A reaction appearing 12 to 48 hours after wear, itching, and persisting for days after the watch comes off is allergic contact dermatitis, usually to nickel. One that appears the same day, worsens in heat, and clears overnight is friction or trapped moisture. The second is far more common and usually cheap to fix.

A rash under a watch has three common causes and they look similar to the wearer and completely different to a dermatologist. Working out which one you have costs nothing and decides whether the answer is a new bracelet, a looser clasp, or nothing more than washing the watch.

The delayed onset is the single most useful signal. Allergic contact dermatitis is a type IV immune response and it takes a day or two to appear, which is why people so often blame something they did yesterday rather than the watch they have worn all week. Irritant and moisture reactions are immediate and they resolve as fast as they arrived.
The second most useful signal is what happens when you stop. Take the watch off for a week. A friction or moisture reaction is gone in a day. An allergic one takes days and often needs the skin to fully recover before it settles.
What the law actually limits, and why it matters
Owners often assume "nickel free" is a claim about composition. Where the law speaks at all, it is not. The one widely applied rule on the subject is European: entry 27 of Annex XVII to the REACH Regulation restricts nickel release, not nickel content, and it names watches directly, since wrist-watch cases, watch straps and tighteners are listed in the entry. It matters well beyond Europe, because a brand selling into that market usually builds one specification and ships it everywhere.
The limit for articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin is 0.5 micrograms of nickel per square centimeter per week. Post assemblies inserted into pierced ears and other pierced parts of the body have a stricter limit of 0.2. The measurement method is EN 1811. For coated items, EN 12472 first subjects the item to simulated wear and corrosion, because a coating that hides nickel when new is not protection.
Three practical consequences follow.
First, a steel watch can be fully compliant and still be roughly 10 to 14 percent nickel by weight. 316L is a nickel-bearing austenitic steel. What keeps it below the release limit is the passive chromium oxide film described in our page on rust and corrosion, not the absence of the metal.
Second, compliance is a property of the item when tested, not a permanent state. A bracelet whose plating has worn through, whose links are pitted, or which has been sitting in salt and sweat for years, can release considerably more nickel than it did new. This is the honest explanation for the very common experience of wearing a watch happily for six years and then reacting to it.
Third, and this is the part US buyers miss: there is no federal American counterpart to that limit. No US rule sets a nickel release figure for watches, so whether your watch clears it depends entirely on whether the maker built to the European standard. Most international brands do. Some cheap direct-import sellers do not, and buying across a border from a marketplace listing leaves you with no regulatory floor at all, only whatever material specification you can get in writing.
The boring causes, which are more common than allergy
Before spending anything, rule these out. In rough order of frequency:
- Soap and detergent trapped under the bracelet. Hand washing pushes soap into the links and rinsing does not get it out. It sits against the skin all day. This causes a genuinely convincing rash and it is fixed by cleaning the bracelet properly, following how to clean a watch.
- Too tight a fit. A bracelet that cannot move traps sweat and loads the skin at the clasp edges. See how a watch should fit: the standard is that the watch can slide a centimeter or two, roughly half an inch to an inch, but not spin freely.
- Never taking it off. Skin under a watch worn 24 hours a day never dries. Take the watch off at night and the problem often disappears without any other change.
- Heat and exercise. A caseback under a sweating wrist during a workout is a small sauna. Many people who react only in summer have this and not an allergy.
- The strap, not the watch. Chrome-tanned leather, dyes and adhesives all cause reactions, as covered in our guide to straps and bracelets.
The test that separates these from allergy is cheap: clean the watch and bracelet thoroughly, loosen the fit by one link or one micro-adjustment position, take it off every night, and give it two weeks. If the reaction goes, it was never the metal.
If it really is the metal
Nickel is the most frequently identified contact allergen in patch testing on both sides of the Atlantic, and sensitization is permanent once it develops. If patch testing confirms it, the material question becomes straightforward.

Titanium is the usual destination, and it brings a second benefit: it is roughly 40 percent lighter than steel for the same volume, which reduces the pressure of the caseback against the skin. Be careful with "surgical steel", which is a marketing phrase rather than a grade and tells you nothing about composition.
A resin-cased watch such as the Casio G-Shock DW5600 sidesteps the problem entirely at a price that makes it a reasonable test purchase: around $70 at US list, before sales tax. Wear one for a month, and if the reaction stops, you have your answer for the cost of a dinner out.
The cheap fixes, in order
- Clean the watch. Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush through the links and around the clasp, rinse thoroughly, dry completely.
- Loosen it. One link or one micro-adjustment position. Enough that it moves.
- Take it off at night, and off before exercise.
- Switch to a fabric or rubber strap for two weeks. This removes the bracelet and the clasp from the equation while keeping the watch, and it costs $20 to $80.
- Swap wrists temporarily to let the skin recover, while noting whether the reaction follows.
- Get patch tested if the reaction survives all of the above. Knowing the actual allergen is worth more than guessing at metals.
Only after that does replacing the watch make sense. A titanium bracelet retro-fitted to an existing watch is rarely available and rarely cheap: expect $250 to $700 where the brand offers one at all, indicative for 2026, quoted before sales tax and highly variable. A good rubber or fabric strap costs a tenth of that and solves the problem for most people, which is why it belongs several steps earlier in the list.
What to buy if this is you
If patch testing has confirmed nickel sensitivity, treat it as a specification requirement and shop accordingly: titanium, ceramic or resin case, and a fabric, rubber or titanium bracelet. Ask the retailer for the case material by grade, not by adjective, using the vocabulary in our guide to case materials. Common follow-up questions
My watch is stainless steel. How can I be reacting to nickel?
Stainless steel contains nickel. 316L is roughly 10 to 14 percent nickel by weight. What keeps it tolerable for most people is not the absence of nickel but the passive chromium oxide film on the surface, which holds release far below the level that provokes a reaction. Scratches, pitting, corrosion and sweat can degrade that film locally, and a small number of highly sensitized people react to compliant steel regardless.
Is the caseback or the bracelet more likely to be the problem?
Check both, because they are often different parts made differently. The caseback is the largest continuous contact area and it traps sweat against the skin, so it is the usual site for a moisture reaction. The bracelet and the clasp are the usual site for a metal reaction, because clasps are more often plated or made from a cheaper alloy, and plating wears through at the edges first. If the rash follows the bracelet and not the caseback, that tells you a lot.
Does a coating fix a nickel problem?
Partly and temporarily. A physical vapor deposition or diamond-like carbon coating is a barrier, and while it is intact it works. It wears through at high points and edges, and the European test method EN 12472 exists precisely because a coated item can pass a release test when new and fail after simulated wear. Clear nail varnish on a caseback is the household version and it works the same way: for a few weeks, then it flakes.
Could it be the leather strap rather than the metal?
Yes, and this is under-recognized. Chromium salts used in chrome tanning are a known contact allergen, and some people who blame a watch are reacting to the strap. Dyes and adhesives in cheap straps cause reactions too. If the rash follows the strap and stops where the case sits, switch to an untreated fabric strap for two weeks as a test before spending anything.
When should I see a doctor rather than change my watch?
If the rash blisters, weeps, spreads beyond the contact area, or persists after two weeks without the watch. Allergic contact dermatitis is diagnosed by patch testing, which identifies what you actually react to rather than what you assume you react to. That is worth doing, because nickel sensitization affects jewelry, belt buckles, glasses frames and coins, not just watches.
