How often should I wind my automatic watch?
Short answer
If you wear it all day and move about, not at all. If you have a desk job, take the watch off in the evening, or rotate between watches, give it a short wind each morning before you put it on: about 20 turns keeps it in the strong part of its mainspring. A watch that has stopped needs 30 to 40 turns before you set it.

The correct frequency depends entirely on how you wear the watch, and the answer for most people is not the one the marketing implies. An automatic worn on an active wrist for fourteen hours a day never needs the crown touched. An automatic worn by somebody at a keyboard, taken off at bedtime, and swapped for something else at the weekend needs a short wind most mornings.
Neither case is a fault. Automatic winding was designed for a wrist in motion, and it is very good at that one job.
The daily wear case
Wear the watch, and do nothing. That is the whole routine for a watch worn seven days a week by somebody who walks, gestures, cooks and carries things. The rotor keeps the mainspring near the top of its wind, and the watch sits in the part of its torque curve where the rate is most stable.
The number behind this is worth knowing. A typical automatic needs somewhere around 650 to 800 rotor turns a day to replace what it uses. An active day supplies that comfortably. A sedentary day does not come close, which is why the same watch can gain reserve on a Saturday and lose it on a Tuesday.
When a morning wind earns its place
Give the crown about 20 turns before you put the watch on if any of the following is true.
- You spend the day mostly still: desk work, driving, long flights.
- You take the watch off in the evening and it has a reserve under about 45 hours, which covers most calibers made before the last decade.
- You rotate between watches, so each one sits for days at a time.
- You want the best rate the watch can give, for instance while you are timing it or after having it regulated.
That last point is the one owners underestimate. As the mainspring unwinds, torque falls, amplitude falls with it, and the watch drifts away from the rate it was adjusted to. Nobody regulates a watch at the bottom of its reserve, so a watch habitually run down there will not match its specification. A short daily wind is the cheapest accuracy improvement available, and it costs ten seconds.
Restarting a watch that has stopped
A stopped automatic needs a real wind rather than a top-up, because there is no reserve at all to work with.
- Take the watch off. Winding on the wrist loads the stem sideways against the case tube.
- If it has a screw-down crown, unscrew it completely first. Winding against a partly engaged thread is how crowns and tubes get ruined, and the cure is a bench repair.
- Wind 30 to 40 turns, unhurriedly, in short movements of the fingers rather than full rotations.
- Set the date, avoiding the hours around midnight when the calendar mechanism is engaged. The reasoning is in when it is unsafe to change the date.
- Set the time, then screw the crown back home if it screws down. Push in gently, feel for the thread to catch, and turn.
Fifteen to twenty turns is enough to get a stopped watch running with hours in hand, which is fine if you are about to wear it all day. Thirty to forty takes most movements close to full, which is what you want if it is going straight back in the drawer or if you are setting it accurately.
How far to wind, and how you know
The rule differs by movement type, and it is the single most useful thing to understand about winding.
On a hand-wound watch, wind until you feel firm, unmistakable resistance, then stop. The mainspring is hooked to the barrel wall and it genuinely runs out of travel. Counting is a poor substitute for feeling it.
On an automatic there is no stop at all. The spring's outer end is a slipping bridle that slides once the spring is full, so the crown will keep turning smoothly forever and nothing useful happens after the first 30 or 40 turns. Count, or simply stop when you have given it a sensible number. The detail is in how many turns it takes to wind a watch.
You cannot overwind it
This worry stops more owners from winding than any other, and it is misplaced. The slipping bridle means an automatic mainspring cannot be loaded past its design tension by the crown, by the rotor, or by a winder running for a month. Two real cautions remain, and neither is about the mainspring: do not wind while wearing the watch, and do not wind with a screw-down crown still threaded.
Wind it rather than shake it
The habit of swinging a stopped watch back and forth does work, in the sense that the rotor turns and the watch starts. It is still the wrong tool. The rotor is a heavy mass on a small bearing, sized for the gentle accelerations of an arm, and shaking loads that bearing with impacts it was never designed for. A worn rotor bearing later announces itself as a faint gritty rustle when you rock the watch near your ear.
It is also slow. Twenty crown turns take about fifteen seconds and put in more than a minute of enthusiastic shaking. Wind the watch, then put it on. The only case for wrist motion is a movement that cannot be hand-wound at all, such as Seiko's long-running 7S26, where 30 to 60 seconds of slow, deliberate rotation is the right approach.
Long reserves change the routine
How often you need to intervene is mostly a function of the number on the specification sheet.
A 38 hour movement taken off on Friday evening is stopped by Sunday morning. A 70 or 80 hour movement is still running on Monday, which is why long power reserve calibers such as the ETA Powermatic 80, Seiko's 6R35 and Rolex's 3235 have changed what owners expect. Long reserve does not remove the case for a morning top-up on desk days. It just moves the point at which neglect becomes visible.

If you find yourself winding every single morning and the watch still dies overnight, stop treating it as a habit problem. A reserve that has fallen well below the published figure is one of the earliest symptoms an owner can detect without instruments, and it points at a service rather than at your routine. For everyone else, the decision is simple. If you are an active daily wearer, do nothing and enjoy the fact that the watch handles it. If you are not, spend ten seconds on the crown before you put it on, and skip the winder.
Common follow-up questions
Is winding an automatic by hand bad for it?
No. The winding train is designed for it, and every automatic that hand-winds is tested that way at the factory. The wear people worry about comes from doing it badly: winding with the watch on your wrist, which levers the stem sideways, or winding with a screw-down crown still partly threaded. Take the watch off, unscrew the crown fully, and wind gently.
My watch runs down even though I wear it all day. Why?
Usually low activity, sometimes a movement problem. A rotor needs sustained arm movement, and a day of typing and driving supplies very little. Try a 20 turn wind each morning for a week. If the watch still stops, the winding module or the mainspring may be at fault, and a falling power reserve is the classic early sign that a service is due.
Should I wind it before or after setting the time?
Before. Setting the hands and the date on an almost dead mainspring means moving the gear train on very little torque, which is exactly when a date change is most likely to jam. Wind first, then set the date, then set the time. On a screw-down crown, screw it back home afterwards and check it is seated.
Does a watch winder replace the morning wind?
It does, for the watches on it. Whether that is worth the money is a separate question, and for a one or two watch collection it usually is not: restarting a stopped automatic takes under a minute. The genuine case for a winder is a watch that is tedious to reset, such as a perpetual or annual calendar.
