My quartz watch has stopped
Short answer
Start with the battery: it is the cause in the large majority of cases, and a watch that has stopped dead with no warning is the classic signature. If a fresh battery does not revive it, the likely causes are a corroded or displaced contact, a seized movement from old lubricant or moisture, a broken coil, or on a light-powered watch a secondary cell at the end of its life. Only the first two are cheap.

Quartz movements fail in a small number of characteristic ways, and they announce most of them. Spending two minutes reading the symptoms saves you from the very common experience of paying for a battery, getting the watch back, and finding it stops again a week later.
The battery, and how to be sure
The signature of a flat battery is a watch that stopped without ever running badly. Quartz movements do not slow down as the voltage falls; the integrated circuit maintains the oscillator frequency until it cannot, and then the watch stops.
Before that, most movements give you a warning: the seconds hand starts moving in four-second jumps, once every four seconds. That is not a fault. It is an end-of-life indication designed into the movement, and it means you have days or weeks.
If a new battery does not help

Light-powered watches are different
If the watch is a Citizen Eco-Drive, a Seiko Solar or an equivalent, there is no battery to change and a battery is not the problem. Put it in bright daylight, not office light, for several hours and see whether it restarts. Many of these movements enter a power save mode in which the hands stop entirely while the movement keeps time internally, and they reset themselves when charged.
If a full day of daylight does not revive it, the rechargeable secondary cell has probably reached the end of its life. That is a genuine service part, not a consumer item, and it usually means a visit to the brand or a specialist. It is a long way from a failure: these cells commonly last well beyond a decade, which is several ordinary battery changes.
If it got wet
Treat this as urgent. Water inside a quartz movement corrodes the coil, the circuit board and the steel parts, and the damage continues while you wait. Pull the crown out to vent the case, keep the watch somewhere warm and dry, and get it opened as soon as you can. Do not put it in rice. See fog under the crystal for the same problem caught earlier.
What it costs, and when to stop
A battery change with a new gasket and a pressure test typically runs somewhere in the region of $40 to $80, or $15 to $60 for the cell alone with no test, and more again at a brand boutique. A quartz movement replacement on a common caliber is often $70 to $175 fitted, which is the honest reason many inexpensive quartz watches are not repaired: the movement is a module, and swapping it is cheaper than diagnosing it. These are indicative US figures before sales tax, and bench rates differ wherever you are, so ask for a price before the watch is booked in.

Preventing the next one
Change the battery when the four-second jump starts, not months later. Ask for the gasket to be replaced and the case pressure tested at the same time: it costs very little on top and it is the only thing that keeps the water resistance marking meaningful. And if a watch is going into storage, have the battery removed rather than left in.
Common follow-up questions
What does the seconds hand jumping every four seconds mean?
It is a deliberate low-battery warning, built into most quartz movements. The watch keeps time correctly but moves the seconds hand in four-second jumps so you can see the battery is nearly flat. You have days to weeks, not months. Replace it before it dies and leaks.
Does a quartz watch keep working if I do not wear it?
Yes, and it keeps draining. Unlike a mechanical watch, which stops when the mainspring runs down, a quartz movement runs continuously from the battery whether it is on your wrist or in a drawer. A watch you never wear will still need a battery on the same schedule.
Can I change the battery myself?
You can, and on a snap-back case with a push-in crown it is genuinely simple. The catch is that opening the case breaks the water resistance seal, and refitting the back without replacing and greasing the gasket, then pressure testing, leaves you with a watch that is no longer sealed. On anything you swim with, or anything you care about, pay somebody with a pressure tester.
