Watch marketing is unusual in that a few of its terms are defined by law or by an international standard, and most of the rest are defined by nobody at all. The trouble is that the two categories look identical in a product description. "Swiss made" is a legally controlled statement with a percentage attached. "Manufacture" is a word anyone may print on anything.

This guide sorts them. For each claim: what it is meant to suggest, what it is actually permitted to mean, and the one follow-up question that resolves it. The questions are the useful part, because a claim that survives the follow-up is usually true.

The four biggest offenders

"In-house" and "manufacture"

Neither term has a legal definition anywhere. In-house is generally used to mean the brand designed and made the movement itself, but it is routinely applied to a movement designed by a supplier and assembled by the brand, to a supplier movement modified with a proprietary rotor and finishing, or to a movement made by a sister company inside the same group. Manufacture, from the French manufacture d'horlogerie, traditionally described a firm that produces its own movements rather than buying them, and now appears on dials as a marketing word.

None of this makes a supplier movement worse. A well-made, widely serviceable third-party caliber is often the better ownership proposition, because parts and expertise are everywhere. What the words should not do is justify a premium on their own.

Ask: who designed this caliber, who manufactures the escapement and the hairspring, and can an independent watchmaker obtain parts for it?

"Swiss made" versus "Swiss movement"

This one is genuinely regulated, under Swiss law, and the rules were tightened with effect from 2017. In outline, a watch may be marked Swiss made when its movement is Swiss, the movement is cased up in Switzerland, the final inspection is carried out in Switzerland, at least 60 percent of the manufacturing cost is generated in Switzerland, and the technical development took place there. A movement counts as Swiss when it is assembled and inspected in Switzerland and Swiss-made components account for at least 60 percent of its value.

The distinctions matter. "Swiss movement" on a dial tells you about the movement, not the watch: the case, dial, hands and assembly may be from anywhere. "Swiss parts" is not a controlled designation at all. And even full "Swiss made" status is a cost-origin rule, not a quality grade. The detail is in our guide to Swiss made and origin marks.

Ask: is the marking "Swiss made" or "Swiss movement", and where was the watch assembled and cased?

"Chronometer", "chronograph" and everything in between

A chronograph is a complication: a stopwatch built into a watch. A chronometer is a precision rating. The words are unrelated, and confusing them is the single most common error in watch writing.

In practice, "chronometer" should mean certified by an independent body against a published standard. COSC, the Swiss official chronometer testing institute, tests bare movements over 15 days in five positions and at three temperatures against ISO 3159, and the headline criterion is a mean daily rate between minus four and plus six seconds. Other schemes exist and set their own bars, some of them stricter and applied to the cased watch rather than the movement.

The phrases to distrust are the ones that borrow the word without the certificate. "Chronometer accuracy" and "regulated to chronometer standards" mean the maker believes the watch performs comparably, which may well be true, but nobody independent has checked, and no certificate accompanies the watch. That is a real difference in what you are buying, and it is set out fully in accuracy and chronometer standards.

Ask: is there a certificate, who issued it, and was the test done on the movement or on the finished watch?

"Scratch-resistant" and "sapphire-coated"

Scratch resistance is relative, always. Anything softer than the material doing the scratching leaves no mark; anything harder does. Sapphire, being synthetic corundum, sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, above the quartz-family particles that make up most everyday grit, which is why sapphire crystals survive ordinary life so well. Mineral glass sits far lower and marks readily.

"Sapphire-coated" is the phrase to watch. It describes mineral glass carrying a thin sapphire layer. The coating raises surface hardness while it lasts, but it is thin, it can wear through in the middle where the watch contacts surfaces, and once it does the crystal behaves like the mineral glass underneath. A crystal is either sapphire or it is not, and the full comparison is in watch crystals compared.

Ask: is the crystal solid sapphire, and is the anti-reflective coating internal, external or both?

Movement grades: the claim hiding inside a caliber number

"Contains a Swiss ETA 2824-2" is accurate and incomplete, because that caliber has long been supplied in four grades that differ in the quality of the regulating organ, the number of positions adjusted and the rate tolerance. ETA's own published specifications set them out roughly as follows.

The same logic applies to other suppliers and to in-house calibers, which frequently exist in a base and a decorated or better-regulated version. Two watches quoting the same caliber number can therefore be quite different products, and the grade is rarely printed on the dial. Materials claims in one paragraph each

"Surgical grade steel" has no meaning in horology. There is no watch standard by that name. Almost every steel watch case is austenitic stainless steel, most commonly 316L, chosen for corrosion resistance and low nickel release rather than for anything surgical. If a maker will not name the alloy designation, assume the ordinary answer.

"Aerospace grade titanium" usually means Grade 5, the alloy Ti-6Al-4V, which is harder and stronger than the commercially pure Grade 2 also used in watchmaking. Both are titanium, both are light, and Grade 2 marks more easily. The word "aerospace" tells you nothing by itself, and the comparison across case metals is in watch case materials.

"DLC" is diamond-like carbon, a genuinely hard amorphous carbon coating applied in a vacuum process. The physics is real. The limitation is geometry: the coating is only microns thick, so a scratch deep enough to reach the metal beneath exposes a bright line that cannot be polished out without stripping and recoating the case.

"Anti-magnetic" is the most misleading of the set, because a standard does exist and its threshold is low. ISO 764 asks a watch to survive a field of 4,800 A/m, about 60 gauss, and to keep running within 30 seconds a day afterwards. Modern claims of 1,000 or 15,000 gauss are far beyond that, and are made against some other regime: sometimes the maker's own, sometimes an independent one, as with the METAS Master Chronometer certification that tests the cased watch at 15,000 gauss. Common follow-up questions

Is an in-house movement better than a supplier movement?

Not inherently. An in-house caliber can be a genuine technical achievement or a lightly reworked base movement, and the phrase does not distinguish between them. For ownership, a widely used supplier caliber is often easier and cheaper to service because parts and expertise are common. Judge the specific movement on its rate, its power reserve, its construction and its serviceability, not on the label.

Does "Swiss made" guarantee quality?

No. It is an origin rule about where value was added and where the watch was assembled and inspected, not a performance standard. A Swiss made watch may contain a basic movement, and a watch made elsewhere may be excellent. The mark tells you about geography and cost distribution, and it is worth exactly that.

What is the difference between COSC certification and "chronometer accuracy"?

COSC certification is an independent test of an individual movement against ISO 3159, over 15 days, in five positions, at three temperatures, with a certificate issued for that movement. "Chronometer accuracy" is a claim made by the seller with no third-party verification and no certificate. The performance may be similar; the evidence is not.

Is a limited edition a good investment?

Treat the phrase as marketing rather than as information. There is no rule governing what "limited" means: an edition may be limited to a stated number, to a production period, or to nothing in particular. Editions in the thousands are common. Scarcity only affects value when demand exceeds it, which is rarely predictable at the point of sale.

Do more jewels mean a better movement?

No. Jewels are synthetic ruby bearings, they have been inexpensive for over a century, and a simple movement needs around 17 to jewel the pivots that matter. Counts well above the mechanism's requirement usually indicate jewels placed where they do no work. The count tells you about the movement's layout and complications, not its quality.
