What a first mechanical watch costs
The verdict
A first mechanical watch usually costs between about $150 and $2,000 in 2026, and the sensible middle for most first-time buyers is roughly $300 to $800. Below $200 you get a working automatic with compromises in crystal, sealing and finishing. Above $2,000 you are mostly buying brand, certification and decoration rather than function. These are indicative US figures, quoted before sales tax, and they move with market, discounting and availability.

A first mechanical watch costs between roughly $150 and $2,000 for almost everybody, and the band that suits most first-time buyers is somewhere around $300 to $800. Those are indicative US figures for 2026, quoted the way American retail quotes them: before sales tax, which varies by state. Buying anywhere else, the local list price moves with tax, with import duty, with how heavily a brand is discounted where you live, and with the currency you are paying in. Treat every number here as a shape, not a quote.
The more useful question is what each step up actually buys. Below, the bands are described by what changes in the movement, the crystal, the sealing, the finishing and the bracelet, because those are the five things you can check on a specification sheet and feel on your wrist.
What drives the price of an entry-level mechanical watch
Five things move the number, and only two of them are strictly mechanical.
- The movement. A Japanese workhorse caliber costs a manufacturer a fraction of what a Swiss one does, and an in-house caliber costs more again because the development is amortized over fewer watches.
- Materials. Sapphire instead of mineral, ceramic instead of aluminum on a bezel, solid links instead of folded ones. Each is a real cost and each is visible.
- Certification. Submitting movements to chronometer testing costs money per movement and adds a documented rate standard. It is uncommon below roughly $700.
- Finishing. Hand-applied indices, polished bevels, a decorated rotor. This is labor, it is the least functional thing you buy, and it is a large share of the price above $1,000. Our guide to movement finishing sets out what is machine work and what is not.
- Brand position and distribution. The retailer's margin, the marketing budget and the service network are all inside the ticket price. This is the part that does not come back when you sell, which is the subject of our depreciation guide.

Under $200
This band is dominated by Japanese automatics, and it is a genuine mechanical watch rather than a novelty. A Miyota 8215 or a Seiko 4R runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with roughly 40 hours of power reserve. Published rate tolerances at this level are wide, commonly quoted as something like minus 20 to plus 40 seconds a day, which sounds alarming and usually behaves better than that in practice.
What you give up is specific. The crystal is hardened mineral, which resists scratches less well than sapphire. The case is often plated rather than solid finished steel. Water resistance is frequently 30 or 50 meters, which under the ISO 22810 test regime means splashes, not swimming. Bracelets are hollow and rattle. Dial printing is machine work and the alignment of the chapter ring is a lottery.
Orient is the most interesting name here, because it designs and builds its own calibers at a price where competitors buy generic ones.
$200 to $500
This is the band where a mechanical watch stops making excuses. The Seiko NH35 and 4R36 add hacking seconds and hand-winding, which the cheaper 7S and 8215 calibers do not have. The Miyota 9015 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour for a smoother sweep and a tighter published tolerance. Our comparison of the three workhorse calibers covers the trade-offs properly.
Sapphire appears here, and it is the single upgrade most worth paying for on a watch you intend to wear daily. Water resistance moves to 100 or 200 meters with a screw-down crown. Bracelets get solid links, though clasps remain stamped.
The Seiko 5 Sports sits squarely in this band and is the default recommendation for a reason. If you want a dive-style watch with 200 meters of rating, the Prospex Turtle is usually a little above it.
$500 to $1,000
Swiss mechanicals start here. The Powermatic 80, used by Tissot and Certina, gives about 80 hours of reserve, which means you can leave a watch off on Friday evening and find it running on Monday morning. Hamilton sells hand-wound and automatic field watches in the same band on ETA-derived calibers.
Sapphire is standard. Anti-reflective coating appears. Cases get a proper mix of brushed and polished surfaces rather than a single satin finish. Bracelets get solid end links and clasps you can adjust without a tool. The Tissot PRX is the obvious integrated-bracelet option, with the caveat that an integrated bracelet commits you to that bracelet more or less permanently.
What does not improve much is timekeeping. An 80 hour barrel trades some amplitude for reserve, and the balance in these calibers is regulated by an index rather than free-sprung. Read our accuracy standards guide before you assume Swiss means precise.
$1,000 to $2,000
Above a thousand dollars the mechanical gains slow down and the perceptual gains speed up. You get better case work, applied and polished indices, ceramic bezels, decorated movements visible through an exhibition caseback, and occasionally COSC certification. Longines and Oris both have a foot in this band and a good deal of their catalogue above it: a Longines Spirit or an Oris Aquis is closer to $2,600, and the Oris Calibre 400 sits higher again.
This is also where depreciation starts to cost real money. Losing half of $300 is an annoyance. Losing half of $1,800 is a decision you should make deliberately.
New against pre-owned
The pre-owned discount is the largest single lever available to a first-time buyer. Across the mainstream Swiss and Japanese brands, a recent watch in good condition typically trades at roughly 45 to 70 percent of its new price, and less for brands that are heavily discounted new. That is a broad range and it moves, but the direction never changes.

The costs that come after the purchase
The ticket price is roughly two thirds of the story on a watch you keep for a decade. A full service on a simple automatic runs somewhere around $250 to $500 at an independent watchmaker, and more at a brand service center: our service price guide breaks that down. How to check the current figure, and which band suits you
Any price page ages. Three checks keep you honest, and all three take minutes.
- Open the manufacturer's own site for your country and read the list price. A US list price is quoted before sales tax; most other markets quote it with local tax included. Either way that is the ceiling, not the price.
- Check two authorized dealers in your market for the same reference. The gap between them tells you how much discounting the brand tolerates.
- Search completed sales, not asking prices, on a large second-hand marketplace. Asking prices are aspirations; completed sales are the market.

If you want to find out whether you like mechanical watches at all, spend $200 to $400 and accept the mineral crystal. If you already know you will wear it daily for years, $500 to $800 buys sapphire, real sealing and a bracelet that fits, and it is the band with the best ratio of function to money. Go above $1,000 only when a specific watch is the one you want, not because the next band up sounds better on paper. And if the loss on resale would bother you, buy pre-owned and let somebody else pay for the shop.
Common follow-up questions
Is a $200 automatic a real mechanical watch?
Yes. A Seiko or Orient automatic at that money has a genuine mainspring, gear train, escapement and balance, and it is assembled and regulated in a factory that has been building movements for decades. What you give up is a hardened mineral crystal instead of sapphire, a wide published rate tolerance, plainer finishing and a bracelet with hollow links. None of that stops it working for years.
Should I stretch to $1,000 for my first watch?
Only if the watch at $1,000 is the one you actually want to wear daily. The mechanical gain between $500 and $1,000 is real but modest: a longer power reserve, better case finishing, a bracelet that adjusts properly. The larger cost is the depreciation, which is a percentage of a bigger number. Buying a $400 watch first and a considered second watch later loses less money than guessing high.
Does a more expensive watch keep better time?
Not reliably. Price buys a tighter published tolerance and, above a certain level, chronometer certification. It does not buy accuracy in your specific watch, which depends on regulation, position, magnetism and wear. A well-regulated $300 automatic can hold a few seconds a day. An unregulated $3,000 one can drift more. Measure yours rather than assuming.
Is it better to buy pre-owned for a first watch?
Financially, almost always. A recent watch in good condition typically trades at roughly 45 to 70 percent of its new price in the mainstream Swiss and Japanese brands, so somebody else has absorbed the first drop. The cost is that you carry the authentication and condition risk yourself, and the warranty is usually gone. If this is your first watch and you cannot inspect one confidently, a new watch from an authorized dealer buys peace of mind that is worth something.
