The verdict

Worth buying if you want a Swiss mechanical watch at the entry price and you know what the entry price buys. A Powermatic 80 gives you about 80 hours of reserve and a Nivachron balance spring for roughly $650 to $850 in the United States, before sales tax. You give up hand finishing, chronometer certification on most references, and the ability to have the rate adjusted the ordinary way.

Tissot is where most people meet a Swiss mechanical watch for the first time. That is not an accident of marketing. It is the deliberate job the Swatch Group has given the brand: take the group's own movements, its own balance springs and its own component suppliers, and turn them into a Swiss made automatic that sells in six figures of units a year.

Everything good and everything disappointing about Tissot follows from that job description.

Who owns Tissot, and where it comes from

Tissot has been in Le Locle in the Swiss Jura since 1853. It belongs to the Swatch Group, and the group publishes its own brand segmentation in its annual reports: Prestige and Luxury at the top (where Omega sits), then High Range (Longines), then Middle Range, then the Basic Range built around Swatch itself. Tissot is Middle Range, sharing that tier with Certina, Mido and Hamilton.

That segmentation is worth taking seriously, because it is the group's own statement of intent rather than an outsider's ranking. It tells you what a Tissot is allowed to be: Swiss assembled, Swiss made under the origin rules, built on shared calibers, and priced so that the group never has to defend the number.

Tissot does not develop movements from a blank sheet. It draws on ETA, the group's movement company, which also supplies Certina, Hamilton, Mido and, in modified form, Longines. Cases and bracelets are sourced rather than made in Le Locle. The brand's own work is design, assembly, testing and distribution.

The Powermatic 80, in plain terms

Most current Tissot mechanicals run the Powermatic 80, which is ETA caliber C07.111. It descends from the ETA 2824-2, the most widely produced Swiss automatic of the last fifty years, with two deliberate changes.

The first is frequency. The balance was slowed from 28,800 to 21,600 vibrations per hour. The second is the barrel and mainspring, redesigned to store more energy. Together those buy a power reserve of about 80 hours from a single barrel, against roughly 38 hours for the caliber it replaced.

Power reserve. Anything under about 60 hours means a watch left off over a weekend will be stopped when you pick it up.

Eighty hours is a real, daily, noticeable benefit. It is the difference between a watch that is dead on Monday morning and one still running after a weekend in a drawer. Current versions also use a Nivachron balance spring, a titanium-based alloy developed inside the group and rolled out from around 2018, which Swatch Group states improves resistance to magnetic fields and to shock compared with the ferrous alloys it replaced.

The molded regulator, and what it costs you

Here is the part that rarely appears in a shop window. The Powermatic 80 has no conventional regulator index. On a traditional caliber, a watchmaker shifts a small lever that changes the working length of the hairspring, and the rate moves. That lever is not there. The movement is adjusted at the factory and left alone, and parts of the escapement are molded rather than machined from metal.

This is a genuine engineering trade, made openly. Factory adjustment on a jig is cheap, repeatable and accurate enough at volume. Molded escapement components are low friction and inherently non-magnetic. What the design gives up is the ordinary, cheap, twenty-minute rate tweak that older Swiss calibers accept, and that matters to owners who like to keep a watch within a couple of seconds a day. Where the money actually goes

A buyer can feel four things Tissot spends on: sapphire crystals across nearly all current lines, honest water resistance ratings by reference, bracelet and case tooling that is properly finished if not elaborately so, and a service network that exists in most countries. Those are not small.

What the money does not buy is hand work. Bridges and rotors are machine decorated. There is no hand-applied anglage, and there is no chronometer certification on the great majority of references, so the rate you get is a working average rather than a published guarantee. If certification matters to you, the difference between the schemes is worth reading first.

The range, and what each line is for

Tissot's catalog is unusually wide for one brand, and roughly half of it is quartz. The mechanical half divides cleanly.

Prices are indicative US dollar figures for guidance only, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state. What you pay moves with market and discounting, and a list price in another country moves with local tax, import duty and distribution.

The PRX is the line that changed the brand's standing. It revives a 1978 Tissot case shape, a thin tonneau with an integrated bracelet that flows straight out of the case rather than attaching through conventional lugs. Integrated bracelets are expensive to execute well because the case and the first links must be machined to match, and doing it at this price is the most interesting thing Tissot has done in a decade. It is also the reason to check the fit carefully: an integrated bracelet cannot be swapped for a strap of your choosing, and the effective lug to lug is set by the first links.

Quality, and the weaknesses worth naming

Three weaknesses are real and consistent. The first is the regulation question above. The second is clasp and bracelet engineering: Tissot clasps are stamped rather than milled on most lines, with no on-the-fly adjustment, and next to a watch costing three times as much the difference is immediately obvious in the hand.

The third is variance. At this volume, individual watches leave the factory across a wider rate spread than a certified movement would. Most Powermatic 80 examples settle within a few seconds a day, some do not, and there is no published tolerance to hold the brand to. That is what an uncertified automatic means in practice.

What it costs to buy, and what it costs to own

New, most Tissot mechanicals sit between roughly $450 and $1,200 before sales tax, with chronographs above that. Secondhand, expect a broad range of roughly 45 to 70 percent of the new price for a recent watch in good condition, with the PRX holding the upper end and dress lines the lower. Those are ranges, not quotes.

Ownership cost is where entry-level Swiss mechanicals bite. A full overhaul with gaskets and pressure testing at a group service center is a three-figure sum that can approach half the price of an entry watch. Budget for it every seven to ten years of regular wear, or when the watch starts losing time or fogging, whichever comes first. How Tissot holds value

Poorly, in the sense that matters. A Tissot bought new and sold three years later will typically return a minority of its purchase price, and the discounting common in the authorized and gray channels means the effective new price is often below list, which compresses resale further. Buying pre-owned removes most of that loss, and Tissot is a good candidate for it because the calibers are group-standard and parts supply is secure. Read what to check first.

Do not buy a Tissot as a store of value. Buy it as a watch you will wear, and treat the depreciation as the cost of wearing it, exactly as the arithmetic of depreciation suggests.

Who it is for, and who should look elsewhere

Tissot suits a first mechanical watch better than almost anything else in Switzerland: real Swiss production, a movement whose reserve you will notice every Monday, a service network, and a price that does not require a decision about your finances. Look elsewhere in three cases. If you want more water resistance and shock engineering for the same money, Certina uses the same Powermatic 80 in tougher cases. If you want a documented brand history and a hand-wound field watch, Hamilton is the group sibling to check. And if you want a chronometer-certified movement with a silicon balance spring and a rate you can hold the brand to, that starts at Longines, one tier up and roughly three times the money.

Common follow-up questions

Can a watchmaker regulate a Powermatic 80?

Yes, but not in the usual way. The caliber carries no regulator index, so a watchmaker cannot move a lever to shift the rate. Adjustment is made at the balance itself and needs the correct tool, which not every independent workshop keeps. Before you buy, ask the workshop you would actually use whether it services this caliber. A group service center will.

Is a Tissot the same watch as a Certina or a Hamilton?

Not the same watch, but often the same engine. Tissot, Certina and Hamilton all sit in the Swatch Group's Middle Range and all draw on the same ETA C07 caliber family. What separates them is the case, the water resistance, the design program and the price, not the mechanics. Choose on the watch, not on the movement name.

Does the PRX come in a quartz version, and does that matter?

It does, and it matters more than most buyers expect. The quartz PRX is thinner, costs roughly half as much and keeps far better time than the automatic. If you want the case, the bracelet and the 1970s geometry rather than a mechanical movement, it is the cheaper and more accurate way to get them. Is a Tissot worth servicing?

Do the arithmetic first. A full overhaul at a group service center can reach a large fraction of what an entry Tissot cost new, which is a mechanical watch problem rather than a Tissot problem.
