Three supplied calibers power a large share of the mechanical watches sold under about $2,000: the Seiko NH35, the Citizen Miyota 9015 and the Sellita SW200-1. They do the same job and they all hack and hand wind. The interesting differences are not about timekeeping, they are about thickness, noise, and what happens the day the watch stops.

In short: the NH35 is the cheapest reliable way to put an automatic in a case, the 9015 buys a faster balance and a slimmer movement, and the SW200-1 buys a Swiss parts and service ecosystem that already exists. The price gaps are wider than the performance gaps.

Three movements, three market positions

The NH35 comes from Seiko Instruments, the arm of the Seiko group that sells movements to other companies, and is the outward-facing sibling of the caliber family Seiko fits to its own affordable automatics. It was designed to be built in enormous numbers with a minimum of hand attention, and everything about it follows from that: a modest beat rate, generous tolerances, simple construction, and a price low enough that a brand can treat the movement as a consumable.

The Miyota 9015 comes from Citizen's movement division and arrived at the end of the 2000s as a step up from the older 8215, aimed at brands that wanted a faster balance and a thinner watch without paying Swiss prices. It is noticeably slimmer than either of the other two, achieved partly by the winding system that also makes it the noisiest of the three.

The Sellita SW200-1 is a Swiss answer to a Swiss supply problem. Sellita spent decades assembling movements under contract for the Swatch Group company ETA, and when ETA began winding down deliveries to outside customers, Sellita brought out its own calibers built to the same architecture and dimensions as the long-established ETA 2824-2, so a brand could change supplier without redesigning its watches. That compatibility is the entire commercial logic of the movement, and the practical reason to choose one.

Beat rate. It sets how smooth the seconds hand looks, how well the watch shrugs off a knock, and how quickly the oil in the escapement is used up.

Beat rate: what 3 Hz and 4 Hz actually buy

The NH35 runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour: six beats a second, or 3 Hz. The 9015 and the SW200-1 both run at 28,800 vph, eight beats a second, or 4 Hz. People notice this first, usually because the faster seconds hand sweeps more smoothly.

The engineering reason to run faster has nothing to do with smoothness. A balance swinging more often carries more angular momentum relative to any disturbance that reaches it, so knocks and changes of position throw it off proportionally less and it settles back faster, and small irregularities are averaged over more cycles per hour. That is why 4 Hz became the standard for movements intended to be adjusted tightly.

The cost is energy and wear. Every beat is one impulse through the escapement and one more cycle of contact between hardened steel parts, so at 4 Hz a movement consumes more energy per hour and wears its escapement faster than the same design at 3 Hz. Holding the same running time then needs a bigger mainspring barrel, and barrel space is exactly what a thin movement does not have. That is the trade behind the reserve figures. None of it is decisive for an owner: a 3 Hz movement is not meaningfully less durable, and a 4 Hz movement is not automatically more accurate, only more adjustable, which is a different claim.

Reading the accuracy specs honestly

The published figures are factory acceptance windows, not promises about your watch. The NH35 is stated at minus 20 to plus 40 seconds a day, a 60 second band; the 9015 at minus 10 to plus 30, a 40 second band. Sellita sells the SW200-1 in several grades whose tolerances tighten as you move up the range, with a top grade submitted for chronometer certification, so the figure depends on what the brand ordered rather than on the caliber name.

Two things follow. A wide acceptance band does not mean poor performance, only that the factory will pass anything inside it: plenty of NH35 watches run within ten seconds a day out of the box. And the whole spread between these calibers is smaller than what a bench regulation can move. Having a watchmaker demagnetize, adjust and time a movement typically costs less than the price difference between an NH35 watch and a Sellita one, and does more for your rate. The grades matter for another reason: they are how a brand signals what it paid for. A chronometer-certified Sellita has been through the independent test described in accuracy and chronometer standards. A watch whose specification says only "Swiss automatic movement" has told you nothing about regulation.

Winding, power reserve and the noise question

All three wind by hand and all three hack, meaning the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown so you can set the watch to a time signal. A decade ago that combination was a differentiator at these prices; it is now the baseline, and a budget automatic that lacks either is using an older caliber.

The rotors differ, and this is the most audible difference between the three. Seiko uses a pawl-winding system, a lever and two claws that convert rotor movement in both directions into winding: efficient, simple and quiet. Sellita follows the ETA layout, using reversing wheels for bidirectional winding, also quiet. The Miyota 9015 winds in one direction only, so in the other the rotor spins freely with little to resist it. Owners regularly describe an audible whirr on a quick wrist movement, and some feel the mass shifting. It is the design rather than a fault, and whether it bothers you is personal: noticeable in a quiet office, inaudible outdoors.

Roughly forty hours of reserve on any of these three means a watch taken off on Friday evening is stopped by Sunday morning, which is why automatic watches stop overnight is such a common question.

Parts, service and the repair reality

This is where the three genuinely diverge, and spec sheets never show it.

For the two Japanese calibers, the standard repair is replacement. A bare NH35 typically costs roughly $30 to $60 and a 9015 roughly $90 to $160, while a full service by an independent watchmaker runs about $250 to $500 in labor alone. When one stops, a watchmaker fits the dial and hands to a new movement, recases it and pressure tests. Individual components are barely stocked anywhere, because there is no market for them.

For the Sellita, both routes exist. Because the SW200-1 follows the 2824 architecture, independent watchmakers have worked on the layout for fifty years, own the tools and can get components through the channels serving the Swiss aftermarket. A bare movement typically runs roughly $175 to $400 depending on grade, and a full service costs about what any other Swiss automatic costs. All of these figures are indicative US dollars before sales tax, and they are rough in any case: parts pricing, tax and labor rates differ by country and move over time. That is what makes a Sellita watch a safer bet in 2045, since supply of any particular budget caliber depends on its maker continuing to produce it.

Which watches use them, and how to decide

The NH35 and its close relatives sit under a very large share of the independent and microbrand dive, field and everyday automatics sold anywhere, alongside Seiko's own affordable lines using the equivalent internal designation. The 9015 appears a tier up, where a brand wants a slimmer or faster-beating caliber. The SW200-1 sits under a wide range of Swiss watches, including established names: Oris, for example, uses it as the base for its caliber 733. Deciding is mostly a matter of what you are optimizing. For the most watch for the money, take the NH35 and spend the difference on sapphire, a solid bracelet and a properly finished case. For a slim watch, take the 9015 and accept the rotor. For something you intend to have serviced repeatedly over decades, take the Sellita, because you are buying the repair network as much as the movement.

The mistake people make

The common error is buying the movement instead of the watch. Two watches at the same price, one with an NH35 and one with a Sellita, are not otherwise identical. The Swiss caliber costs the brand real money, and that money comes out of somewhere: a thinner bracelet, a stamped clasp, a mineral crystal, a less carefully finished case. Forums argue about calibers because calibers have model numbers and case finishing does not, not because calibers matter more.

The second error is treating the accuracy specification as a prediction. It is an acceptance window measured under factory conditions, and it says nothing about how your watch will behave on your wrist with your habits. Wear it for a week, measure it as described in testing accuracy at home, then decide whether it needs anything. Usually it does not.

Common follow-up questions

Is the Miyota 8215 the same thing as the 9015?

No, and the confusion costs people money. The 8215 is the older and cheaper Miyota: it runs at 21,600 vph, it does not hack, and its seconds hand stutters slightly at each beat because of how the gear train is arranged. The 9015 is the later, thinner, faster-beating caliber that both hacks and hand winds. A listing that says only "Miyota automatic" is usually an 8215.

Can a watchmaker regulate any of these?

Yes. All three have a conventional regulator, and adjusting the rate is routine bench work, typically in the range of roughly $60 to $150 depending on whether the movement is also demagnetized and timed in several positions, though bench rates differ by country and figures move. A regulated NH35 will usually out-time an unregulated Swiss movement, which is why spec sheets are a poor guide to what you will see on your wrist.

Does a Swiss movement mean the watch is Swiss Made?

Not on its own. The Swiss Made marking depends on where the manufacturing costs of the whole watch fall and where the technical development happened, not simply on the origin of the caliber. A watch built abroad around a Sellita movement generally cannot carry the mark, though it may be allowed to state that it contains a Swiss movement.

Why do so many microbrands use the NH35?

Because it removes the two biggest risks in a small production run. It is available in quantity without a long lead time, and it is cheap enough that a warranty claim can be settled by swapping the movement rather than sending the watch to a watchmaker. That predictability is worth more to a small brand than any spec sheet advantage.
