The verdict
Buy the Speedmaster Professional if you want one chronograph to keep. It is certified, documented, repairable and loses less. The Carrera wins in one situation: you want an automatic chronograph with a long power reserve and a 100 meter case, you do not want to wind a watch daily, and you accept that a large part of the price will not come back.

A range rather than a watch: an automatic in-house chronograph at the top, supplied Swiss calibers below it, usually 100 meters.
The Speedmaster and the Carrera sit on the same shelf in the same shops and answer the same brief: a steel Swiss chronograph with a real history behind it. Below the surface they follow different philosophies, and the gap that decides most purchases is not on the specification sheet.
What each one actually is
The Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is one watch with two crystal options. Omega publishes 42 mm diameter, 47.50 mm lug to lug and 20 mm lug width, with the Hesalite version at 13.54 mm thick and the sapphire version at 13.18 mm. It runs caliber 3861, a hand-wound chronograph with a Co-Axial escapement, a silicon balance spring, 26 jewels and 50 hours of reserve. Water resistance is 5 bar.
The Carrera is not one watch. It is a collection covering three-hand automatics, chronographs on TAG Heuer's own integrated caliber, and chronographs on supplied Swiss ebauches, across a spread of case sizes. Comparing "a Carrera" with a Speedmaster is a category error until you have the reference number and the caliber name in front of you. That is how most large collections work, but it means the first step is reading the specification rather than the dial.

The movement question
The Heuer 02 is the more modern chronograph mechanism, and it is not close. A column wheel routes the start, stop and reset commands through a rotating pillar rather than a stamped cam, giving a lighter and more even pusher action. A vertical clutch engages the chronograph by clamping two friction discs face to face rather than pushing one wheel sideways into another, so the seconds hand starts without the small jump a lateral clutch produces. The 3861 keeps the cam and lateral clutch layout the Speedmaster inherited from the Lemania caliber it descends from, which is a deliberate decision to preserve the watch rather than a failure to modernize. What Omega added instead is a Co-Axial escapement, a silicon balance spring and, crucially, an outside certificate: METAS tests the finished watch against eight criteria including function in a 15,000 gauss field, and publishes a record per watch. Below the Heuer 02 sit Carreras on supplied Swiss calibers, most often the Sellita SW200-1 family for three-hand references and 7750-derived movements for older chronographs. These are well-understood movements with a service network that already exists everywhere. The problem is not quality, it is that a buyer comparing prices needs to know which one is in the case, and the marketing rarely leads with it. Wins on mechanism: the Heuer 02. Wins on certification and on knowing what you bought: the Speedmaster, because there is only one caliber and an outside body has measured it.
Hand winding, and what it costs you
This is the difference owners feel every day, and it decides more of these purchases than any spec line.
A hand-wound movement has no rotor and no reversing gear, which removes a layer of mechanism and a set of parts that wear. It is also why a Speedmaster stops if you do not wind it: 50 hours means a watch wound Friday morning is dead by Sunday. Owners wind it each morning, roughly 25 to 40 turns until the crown resists firmly, and it becomes a habit within two weeks or an irritation within a month.
If you own one watch, that habit is pleasant. If you rotate five, it is admin. The Carrera removes the problem entirely, and a Heuer 02 with about 80 hours of reserve survives a full weekend off the wrist, which no Speedmaster does. Wins on convenience: the Carrera, unambiguously. Whether convenience is what you want from a mechanical watch is a separate question, and it is the honest form of the preference.
Case size and thickness
The Speedmaster is a known quantity: 42 mm wide and 47.50 mm lug tip to lug tip, which is moderate for a chronograph, over a case that is 13 to 13.5 mm thick depending on crystal. The Hesalite version is the thicker of the two because its dome is taller, which surprises people who assume sapphire adds height.
Carrera dimensions move with the reference. The collection has run from roughly 39 mm to 44 mm, and the chronographs on the integrated caliber sit at the thicker end, because an automatic chronograph stacks a winding system on top of a chronograph mechanism. Check the published thickness for the individual reference.
Water resistance goes the other way. 5 bar on the Speedmaster is low for the money and has been for decades: it covers rain and hand washing, not swimming, and the pushers must never be operated in water. Most Carreras are 10 bar, a real advantage for a watch you wear without thinking.
Wins on wearability for most wrists: the Carrera, if you pick a smaller reference. Wins on knowing what you are getting: the Speedmaster.
Servicing and running cost
A chronograph costs more to overhaul than a time-and-date watch: more parts to strip, clean, lubricate and adjust, and the chronograph work has to be timed and tested separately.
An Omega service center overhaul on a Speedmaster is commonly in the region of $795 to $1,100 in the United States, quoted before sales tax, against an interval usually quoted in the five to eight year band. A TAG Heuer chronograph on the in-house caliber tends to be less at the brand, and a 7750-derived Carrera is the cheapest of the three, because an independent watchmaker can do the whole job with parts anyone can buy, often for $700 to $1,000. Wins on running cost: a supplied-caliber Carrera. Wins on service network breadth: the same watch again. The Speedmaster loses this dimension and it is not close.
Depreciation, and what you get back
Here the ordering reverses hard.
The Speedmaster Professional is one of a small number of Swiss watches with a stable secondhand market, sustained by a documented history and by a design that has barely changed since 1957. Recent examples with box and papers commonly trade at a moderate discount to list rather than a severe one.
Carrera chronographs behave like most Swiss watches at their price, which is to say they fall substantially in the first few years and then flatten. That is normal and it is not a judgment on the watch. It does mean two things. Buying a Carrera new is an expensive way to acquire one, and buying a three to five year old example is a very efficient one, because somebody else has already absorbed the loss. Wins on depreciation: the Speedmaster, by a wide margin at retail. Wins on total cost if bought used: the Carrera, because its loss has already been taken by somebody else.
Who should buy which
Buy the Speedmaster if this is the chronograph you intend to keep, if you want an outside certificate rather than a brand's own assurance, if you own few enough watches that winding one each morning is a pleasure, and if you can live with a watch you must not swim in.
Buy a Heuer 02 Carrera if you want the better chronograph mechanism, a weekend-proof power reserve, 100 meters of water resistance and an automatic. Buy it secondhand at three to five years old unless the warranty matters more to you than the money.
Buy a supplied-caliber Carrera if you want the design at a lower price and intend to service it locally for decades. Do not pay a manufacture price for it, and read the caliber line before comparing it with anything.
What this comparison does not settle
It does not settle the chronograph question in general, because both are expensive answers to it. A Seiko or a Hamilton does the same job for a fraction, and a quartz chronograph does it more accurately than either.
It also does not settle which Carrera. Two references sharing the name can differ in movement, size, thickness, certification and resale behavior. Any comparison at collection level, including this one, is a starting point: the decisive document is the specification page for the exact reference.
Common follow-up questions
Is the Heuer 02 a better movement than the 3861?
On construction, the Heuer 02 has the more modern chronograph architecture: a column wheel and a vertical clutch, which give a cleaner pusher feel and no stutter when the seconds hand starts. It also winds itself and runs about 80 hours. On certification and rate, the 3861 is ahead, because it is tested by an outside federal body to 0 to plus 5 seconds a day and the Heuer 02 generally is not tested at all. They are better at different things.
Is a Sellita-based Carrera a worse watch?
Not worse, cheaper to build. A Sellita SW200-1 is a proven caliber that any competent watchmaker can service with off-the-shelf parts, which is an advantage over a proprietary movement. What you should not do is pay in-house prices for it. Check which caliber a given Carrera reference actually carries before comparing it with anything, because the collection spans several very different movements.
How often do I have to wind a Speedmaster?
Daily, if you want it running when you pick it up. Fifty hours of reserve means a watch wound on Friday morning is stopped by Sunday. Most owners wind it each morning, roughly 25 to 40 turns of the crown until firm resistance stops you, and set it against a time signal. If you rotate several watches, this is the single most common reason people give for selling a hand-wound chronograph.
Which is better for a first mechanical chronograph?
The Carrera, on price and convenience, if you can find one secondhand where the depreciation has already happened. A three to five year old example often costs about half of list, which removes the worst of the loss. The Speedmaster is the better buy at full retail because the loss is smaller to begin with, but it is a slower, more demanding watch to live with.
