The verdict
Worth buying, and unusually so at the bottom of the range, because the movement, the hairspring and the case come from the same company rather than from a parts catalog. Buy it for mechanical watches between roughly $250 and $1,500. The costs are wide published rate tolerances and visible assembly variance at the cheapest tiers, which you should inspect for rather than hope about.

Almost every watch brand is an assembler. It designs a watch, buys a movement, buys a case, buys a crystal, and puts its name on the dial. Seiko is one of a very short list of companies that does not work that way, and the consequences run through the whole catalog.
Who owns Seiko and where the watches are made
Seiko Group Corporation, listed in Tokyo, is the parent. It took that name in October 2022, when Seiko Holdings Corporation was renamed. Seiko Watch Corporation is the operating company that designs, manufactures and sells the watches.
The structure moved recently in a way that matters. In 2020 Seiko Instruments transferred its watch business to Seiko Watch Corporation, including Morioka Seiko Instruments and its Shizukuishi studio in Iwate prefecture, where the high-end mechanical calibers are assembled. Seiko Instruments still supplies components to the watch operation, including quartz crystal oscillators and micro batteries.
One thing regularly gets confused. Seiko Epson is a separately listed company descended from the same Hattori businesses, and it is the company that owns Orient. Epson makes movements, and it is not the company that sells Seiko-branded watches. Volume assembly for Seiko runs from plants in Japan and in Seiko-owned facilities elsewhere in Asia. Seiko does not publish a model-by-model plant breakdown, so treat any specific claim about where a given reference was screwed together with caution.
The parts Seiko makes that other brands buy
The hairspring is the hardest component in a mechanical watch to produce consistently, which is why most of the industry buys them from a handful of specialist suppliers. Seiko developed its own spring alloys and makes its own. It also makes its own mainsprings, escapement parts, quartz oscillators, luminous compound, cases, dials and hands.
What that buys the reader is not romance, it is price. A company that owns the movement, the case and the crystal can put a genuinely complete watch on the shelf at a number an assembler cannot match, because there is no supplier margin stacked at each step. It is also why a Seiko caliber turns up in so many other brands' watches, and why the phrase in-house movement means something more on a Seiko than it does on most marketing pages.
The caliber ladder: 4R, 6R and 8L
Three families cover almost everything mechanical that Seiko sells, and they are easy to tell apart once you know what each one gives up.
The 4R35 and 4R36 are the entry calibers, 23 and 24 jewels respectively, at 21,600 vibrations per hour, roughly 41 hours of reserve, with both hacking seconds and hand winding, which the older 7S26 they replaced had neither of. Sold to other brands they are called NH35 and NH36, which is why they appear under dozens of names. The 6R35 sits above, with about 70 hours of reserve. The 8L35 is the top of the non-Grand Seiko range: 26 jewels, around 50 hours, assembled at Shizukuishi, and closely related to the Grand Seiko 9S movement without its decoration and regulation.
The published rate figures are the honest part and the uncomfortable part. Seiko states plus 45 to minus 35 seconds a day for the 4R, plus 25 to minus 15 for the 6R, and plus 15 to minus 10 for the 8L35. The 4R figure comes from Seiko's instruction manuals, which quote it worn on the wrist across 5 to 35 degrees Celsius; Seiko's bare caliber booklet lists beat rate, reserve and jewels but no tolerance at all. Time Module, which sells the same design to other brands as the NH35A, publishes minus 20 to plus 40 seconds a day in three positions on the bench, which is the same movement measured a different way. These are static factory acceptance bands measured in a temperature range, not predictions of what your watch will do on your wrist. Most individual watches run far better than the band, because the band has to cover the worst unit that leaves the line.
They are still the widest published tolerances of any large manufacturer at those price points, and buyers who compare them against a Swiss chronometer rating feel that. What the quartz era did, and what it left behind
On 25 December 1969 Seiko put the Astron on sale in Tokyo, the first commercially sold quartz wristwatch, at a price its own museum compares to a car. Within about fifteen years quartz had reset the price of accurate timekeeping to near zero and hollowed out the Swiss mechanical industry.
Seiko's position in that story is more interesting than the usual telling. It kept building mechanical watches straight through the period when much of the industry abandoned them, which is the reason a 4R exists to be bought now for a couple of hundred dollars. It also kept pushing quartz upward rather than only downward: the 9F high-accuracy calibers and the Spring Drive system, which draws all its energy from a mainspring but regulates it with a quartz oscillator instead of an escapement, both sit in the Grand Seiko catalog today.
The range, family by family
Seiko's naming is a genuine obstacle, with families that overlap, references that differ by region and a catalog that changes without announcements. The broad shape is stable, though.

The two entry points most people actually choose between are the Seiko 5 Sports and the Prospex Turtle, and the difference between them is not styling.
The SKX, and what took its place
The SKX007 and its siblings ran the 7S26: no hacking, no hand winding, and a rate band nobody would publish today. What it did have was 200 meters of water resistance, a screw-down crown, and the Diver's marking that ISO 6425 allows only after condensation, salt water and bezel operation tests. Seiko withdrew it from the catalog around 2019 without publishing a reason.
Where Seiko is weak, and it is specific
Three weaknesses come up repeatedly, and all three are real.
- Assembly variance at the bottom. Chapter rings rotated a degree or two off the dial markers, bezels that do not sit exactly at zero, hands that miss twelve. Widely reported across the entry range, never published as a tolerance, and permanent once you own it.
- Wide published rate bands. Plus 45 to minus 35 seconds a day is an honest number, and it is also a number a buyer coming from quartz will find hard to accept. Read it as a worst case rather than an expectation, but read it.
- Crystal specification. Seiko fits Hardlex, its own mineral glass, well up the range, where competitors fit sapphire. Hardlex resists shattering well and scratches far more easily.
What it costs to buy, to own, and what comes back
Prices below are indicative US figures, quoted before sales tax, and they move with market and discounting, which on Seiko is often substantial away from boutiques. Outside the US, local retail also moves with tax, import duty and distribution. Secondhand, entry mechanical Seikos typically trade at half of list or less, mid-range Prospex holds a little better, and a handful of discontinued references including the SKX trade above what they cost new, which is a collector effect rather than a rule. Treat those as collector prices on withdrawn references, not as a reason to buy any Seiko as a store of value.
Ownership cost is where Seiko's structure shows again. Owner's manuals suggest an overhaul every three to four years, which is conservative; many owners run considerably longer and have the gaskets and pressure test done instead. On a 4R the arithmetic is stark, because a complete replacement movement costs less than a watchmaker's overhaul, so replacement is the sensible repair. On 6R and above, an overhaul is worth buying. Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Seiko suits a first mechanical watch better than almost anything else, because the price of entry is low and the thing you are buying is a real manufacture movement rather than a fashion case with a generic caliber inside. It suits divers who want the ISO marking without Swiss pricing. It suits anyone who intends to modify a watch, because parts for the 4R and 7S cases circulate more freely than for any other brand.
Look elsewhere in three cases. If you want accuracy and want to stop thinking about the watch entirely, Citizen is aimed exactly at you, and our head-to-head sets out where each one wins. If you want the same kind of Japanese automatic for less money, with hacking and hand winding as standard, Orient is the closer comparison than most people expect. If you want a watch you will never service and can hit against a door frame without flinching, that is Casio, and it is not a compromise so much as a different question.
Common follow-up questions
Is a Seiko 5 Sports a dive watch?
No, and Seiko does not describe it as one. The current Seiko 5 Sports is rated to 100 meters, has a push-in crown rather than a screw-down crown, and does not carry the Diver's marking that ISO 6425 requires. It is fine for swimming and showering. If you want a watch built and marked for diving, the Prospex line is where Seiko puts it, at roughly double the price.
Why is my new Seiko's chapter ring not aligned?
Because inspection is labor and labor is most of the cost of a cheap mechanical watch. Misaligned chapter rings, bezels a fraction off zero and hands that do not meet at twelve are widely reported on Seiko's entry models. Seiko does not publish assembly tolerances, so treat it as a known pattern rather than a specification. It is cosmetic, it is permanent, and it is a reason to buy where you can see the watch first.
Is the NH35 the same as the 4R35?
Architecturally yes. The NH series is how Seiko's movement business sells these calibers to other watch brands, and the 4R series is the same design used inside Seiko's own watches. Finish and regulation practice can differ between an NH movement bought by a microbrand and a 4R fitted in Seiko's own factory, but the parts, the beat rate and the service procedure are the same.
Should I service an inexpensive Seiko automatic?
Usually not in the traditional sense. A full overhaul of a 4R caliber often costs more than a complete replacement movement, so the rational repair on an entry-level watch is to fit a new movement and reseal the case. That changes above the 6R tier, where the movement is worth the watchmaker's hours, and changes completely for 8L and Grand Seiko calibers, which should go to a specialist.
