The verdict

Grand Seiko makes its own mechanical, quartz and Spring Drive movements in two Japanese studios and finishes its cases to a standard very few Swiss brands match at the price. It is worth buying if you want that finishing and can accept steep depreciation. It is a poor choice if resale matters or if you need a wide service network.

Grand Seiko started in 1960 as Seiko's attempt to beat the Swiss at their own accuracy competitions, spent decades as a line sold mostly in Japan, and became a brand in its own right in 2017. What it makes now is unusual: three completely different timekeeping technologies, all developed and built inside one group, in two studios several hundred kilometers apart.

How Grand Seiko became its own brand

Until 2017 a Grand Seiko was a Seiko: the Seiko logo sat at twelve o'clock and the Grand Seiko name below it. In March of that year the company announced the split, moved the Grand Seiko signature to twelve and dropped Seiko from new dials. The stated reason was positioning. Outside Japan the Seiko name is associated with watches costing a fraction as much, and that association was doing the expensive line no favors. What did not change is ownership. Both brands sit under the same Japanese group, and the movements are made by the same two group subsidiaries as before. Treat the separation as a marketing and distribution decision that gave Grand Seiko its own boutiques, its own price ladder and its own service arrangements. It did not create a new manufacturer.

Two studios, and what each one builds

The split runs along a fault line that goes back to Seiko's two rival factories.

The Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, in Iwate prefecture in northern Japan and operated by Morioka Seiko Instruments, builds every 9S mechanical caliber. The building opened in 2020 and the work there is largely hand assembly and adjustment. The Shinshu Watch Studio, in Shiojiri in Nagano prefecture and part of Seiko Epson, builds the 9F quartz and the 9R Spring Drive calibers, and also houses the Micro Artist Studio that handles the brand's most complicated pieces.

That division matters when you buy. A Spring Drive and a hi-beat mechanical are not two variants of one house style; they come from different engineering traditions inside the same company, and they feel different on the wrist.

Three movement families: 9S, 9F and 9R

Very few companies maintain three unrelated timekeeping technologies. Grand Seiko does, and each solves a different problem.

9S mechanical. A conventional lever escapement, in standard beat and in a 36,000 vibrations per hour hi-beat form. The 9SA5 generation introduced a dual-impulse escapement and a longer power reserve of around 80 hours. This is the family for buyers who want a mechanical watch on its own terms.

9F quartz. Not a commodity quartz movement. Specified at plus or minus 10 seconds a year, with specially regulated versions at plus or minus 5, and built with a twin pulse control motor that drives a heavier second hand, a backlash auto-adjust mechanism to stop the hand shivering, and an instantaneous date change. It is serviceable and it is meant to last decades, which is not the usual quartz proposition. Our guide to quartz against mechanical explains why that distinction exists.

9R Spring Drive. The interesting one. A wound mainspring supplies all the power, as in any mechanical watch, but instead of an escapement it drives a glide wheel that spins continuously. A generator on that wheel powers a quartz oscillator and an integrated circuit, which apply an electromagnetic brake to hold the wheel at exactly the right speed. There is no ticking and no battery, and the seconds hand glides. Caliber 9R65 is specified at plus or minus 1 second a day, and the later 9RA5 at plus or minus 10 seconds a month.

The Grand Seiko Standard against COSC

Grand Seiko does not send mechanical movements to COSC. It runs its own inspection instead, and publishes the criteria.

Accuracy bands. Certification buys a narrower window, not a different kind of timekeeping. Any mechanical watch is beaten by a $30 quartz.

The sixth position is 12 o'clock up, which is roughly how a watch sits on a bedside table overnight, and the extra rigor is real. Two honest qualifications. Grand Seiko grades its own work, as Rolex does, so nobody outside audits the result; our page on what COSC certification means explains what an independent certificate buys. And the figure Grand Seiko quotes for a watch in actual wear is a separate, looser one, typically minus 1 to plus 10 seconds a day, because it accounts for the cased watch rather than the bare movement. A watch that meets the stricter standard is not a chronometer in the certified sense, because it never went to the certifying body.

Zaratsu polishing, and where the money goes

Most polished watch cases are finished on a soft cloth wheel, which conforms to the surface. That produces a bright shine and, inevitably, slightly rounded edges and a faintly wavy plane. Zaratsu works differently: the case is held face-on against a rotating tin lap, by hand, at a controlled angle. The result is a mirror surface flat enough to reflect a straight line without distortion, meeting the adjacent brushed surface at a crisp edge.

The rest of the budget goes to dials, which are stamped or cast to reproduce textures drawn from the landscape around the two studios, and to hands cut and diamond-polished with distinct facets. The collections, and what they cost

Indicative US retail below, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state. These figures move with market and discounting, and outside the US the local list also moves with tax, import duty and distribution.

Known weaknesses, and the cost of ownership

The weaknesses are specific. Case thickness on Spring Drive models is higher than the diameter suggests, because the movement is not thin. The service network outside Japan is thin compared to any large Swiss brand, so turnaround can be long and a Spring Drive cannot be serviced by a general watchmaker at all. Water resistance on the dress and heritage models is often modest, and the polished surfaces that make the watch beautiful show hairlines readily. Warranty terms differ by market, so read the card that came with the watch rather than a forum: the manufacturer warranty is the contract wherever you live, and whatever statutory consumer rights sit on top of it depend on the country you bought in.

Grand Seiko's service guidance for mechanical and Spring Drive calibers points to a shorter interval than the Swiss norm, commonly cited in the three to four year band, and the manual for your caliber is the figure to trust. Overhaul costs vary widely by market and by movement family, with Spring Drive above mechanical: in the US, reckon on roughly $500 to $800 for a 9S mechanical and $700 to $1,000 for a Spring Drive, before parts. Those are indicative ranges rather than a quote, and sending a watch to another country for service adds shipping and possibly duty.

Depreciation, and who should look elsewhere

This is the part the enthusiasm usually skips. Grand Seiko depreciates hard. A recent regular-production reference commonly resells somewhere in the range of 30 to 45 percent below list, and it happens quickly. The reasons are structural rather than a comment on the watch: the brand is young outside Japan, production is not restricted, and the buyer pool is smaller than for the Swiss names. Read that both ways. If you are buying new, price in the loss and buy the watch because you want to wear it for twenty years. If you are buying used, the same fact is the strongest argument in the brand's favor, and our pre-owned buying guide covers what to check.

Grand Seiko is for a buyer who looks closely at objects, who is unmoved by badges, and who is buying once. Look elsewhere if you expect to sell within a few years, or if you live somewhere the service network is absent. Omega offers comparable manufacturing depth with externally certified accuracy and a far wider service network. Tudor is the more sensible choice if the watch is going to be worn hard and knocked about. Rolex is the one that holds its money, and it will make you wait for the privilege.

Common follow-up questions

Is Grand Seiko really separate from Seiko?

Commercially yes, corporately no. Since 2017 it has its own dial signature, its own boutiques and its own distribution, and the Seiko name no longer appears on new Grand Seiko dials. But the same Japanese group owns both, and the movements are made by the same two group subsidiaries that made them before. The separation was a positioning decision, not a divestment, and it does not change who builds the watch.

Is Spring Drive a quartz watch or a mechanical one?

Both, in a specific way. All the energy comes from a wound mainspring, exactly as in a mechanical watch, and there is no battery. What the mainspring drives is a glide wheel that spins continuously rather than an escapement that ticks. A tiny generator powers a quartz oscillator and an integrated circuit, which brake the glide wheel electromagnetically to hold it at the correct speed. That is why the seconds hand sweeps without steps.

Is the Grand Seiko Standard stricter than COSC?

On its stated criteria, yes: a narrower window, six positions instead of five, three temperatures including 38 degrees, and 17 days instead of 15. Two caveats. Grand Seiko administers the test itself, as Rolex does, so no outside body audits it. And the figure quoted for a watch in actual wear is a separate, looser number, typically minus 1 to plus 10 seconds a day, because it accounts for the case, the crown and how the watch is worn.

Why do Grand Seikos lose so much value?

Because the secondhand market prices names, not craftsmanship, and Grand Seiko has been a standalone brand for less than a decade outside Japan. Production is not artificially scarce, boutique discounting exists in some markets, and the buyer pool is smaller than for the Swiss equivalents. A recent example commonly resells somewhere in the range of 30 to 45 percent below list. That is a market condition, and it is also the reason pre-owned Grand Seiko is good value.
