Bezel

Definition

The ring surrounding the crystal on the front of a watch case, which may be purely structural or carry a scale that rotates to measure elapsed time.

A bezel is the ring that sits on the front of the case and holds the crystal in place. On many watches it does nothing else. On others it is a working instrument: a rotating bezel carries a printed, engraved or inlaid scale that the wearer turns to make a measurement, which is the cheapest way to add a useful function to a watch without adding a single wheel to the movement.

Mechanically it is a separate part that snaps into a groove machined around the top of the case, screws onto it, or is held by a sprung retaining wire. A fixed bezel is little more than a clamping ring with a gasket underneath. A rotating bezel is a small assembly: the ring, an insert or coin-edged outer surface, a click spring or a spring-loaded ball riding in teeth, and the wire that keeps it captive. None of it touches the movement, which is why a rotating scale is far cheaper to add than a hand.

The main types

A count-up diver's bezel is marked 0 to 60 minutes. You align the zero marker with the minute hand at the start of a dive and read elapsed time directly off the scale. A countdown bezel is the mirror image, numbered 60 down to 0, and suits a parking meter or a regatta start better than a dive.

A 24-hour bezel pairs with a GMT hand so that a second or third time zone can be tracked; our GMT and world time guide works through the settings. A tachymeter bezel converts elapsed seconds into units per hour when used with a chronograph, and the tachymeter calculator shows the arithmetic behind the scale. A slide rule bezel carries two logarithmic scales that multiply and divide, the flying computer of the Breitling Navitimer since 1952. A pulsometer is graduated for a stated number of pulse beats, usually 15 or 30, so a clinician counts that many and reads the rate off directly. Internal bezels do the same jobs from under the crystal, turned by a second crown, which keeps grit out at the cost of an extra step.

How a rotating bezel works

Indexing comes from a click spring pressing into a ring of teeth cut in the underside of the bezel or in the case. Most dive bezels index in 120 clicks, one every half minute, or 60 clicks, one a minute. Unidirectional bezels use sawtooth rather than symmetrical teeth, so the spring rides over them one way and jams against a vertical face the other.

Nothing about that mechanism is sealed. The gaskets that keep water out sit under the crystal and around the case, not under the bezel, so a bezel full of sand does not make a watch leak. It does make it grind. Rinsing the watch in fresh water and working the bezel through a full turn while it is wet is the whole of the required maintenance.

Why unidirectional matters

ISO 6425, the international standard for diver's watches, requires that a device used to preselect a period of time can only rotate counterclockwise, or is otherwise protected against accidental rotation and mishandling. It also asks for graduations at least every five minutes and a luminous mark at the zero, readable in the dark at 25 cm; our guide to ISO 6425 covers the rest of the test regime. The logic is one-way safety: if the bezel is knocked while submerged it can only make the elapsed time appear longer than it really is, prompting the diver to surface early rather than late. A bidirectional bezel is fine for time zones and entirely wrong for a dive timer.

Bezel materials

Anodized aluminum inserts are light, cheap and easy to print, and they fade and scratch. Collectors pay a premium for exactly that fading on older watches. Ceramic, normally a zirconium oxide compound, reached mainstream use when Rolex introduced its Cerachrom insert in 2005. It holds its color under years of sunlight and shrugs off the scratches that mark aluminum, but it is brittle, so an edge strike can chip it, and a chipped insert is replaced rather than repaired. Steel and titanium bezels are engraved and lacquer-filled. Vintage buyers will also meet Bakelite, used briefly on 1950s Rolex GMT-Masters and withdrawn because it cracked. What good looks like

Judge a rotating bezel by three things. The click action should be firm and evenly spaced through a full turn, with no dead spot and no back-play, meaning it should not rock backwards between clicks. The lume pip should sit exactly over the 12 marker with the bezel at zero, and the printed scale should line up with the dial's minute track all the way round. And the ring should not lift or wobble under thumb pressure.

Misalignment is a common and legitimate complaint, since a bezel that reads half a minute out defeats its own purpose, and it is often correctable: many bezels can be lifted and re-seated one tooth over. A bezel that has gone loose, gritty or free-spinning is a separate matter, covered in a bezel that is loose or will not turn.

What a bezel is not

The chapter ring or rehaut, the sloped inner ring under the crystal that carries the minute track, is not the bezel: it does not rotate and it belongs to the dial side. In listings, "bezel size" almost always means case diameter measured across the bezel, not a separate specification. And a rotating bezel is not a water resistance feature; the rating comes from the case, crystal and gaskets described in the water resistance guide.
