The verdict
Worth buying if you want a watch that is accurate, sealed and effectively maintenance-free, which is what Eco-Drive is for. Citizen is the stronger choice than Seiko below roughly $400 if you do not need a mechanical movement. The costs are mineral crystals at prices where rivals fit sapphire, large case sizes, and weak resale.

Two things about Citizen are unusual, and they are connected. It is one of the very few watch companies that makes its own hairsprings and quartz oscillators rather than buying them. And it is the company that decided, earlier and more completely than anyone else, that the goal was a watch nobody ever has to open.
Who owns Citizen, and what Citizen owns
Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company headquartered in Tokyo, independent and listed, with roots in a watch research institute founded in 1918. What matters more for a buyer is the list of companies underneath it.
Miyota, the group's movement manufacturer in Nagano prefecture, builds mechanical and quartz calibers in enormous volume, both for Citizen and for everyone else. Bulova became a group company in 2008. The Swiss movement maker La Joux-Perret followed in 2012, bringing Arnold and Son with it. Frederique Constant and Alpina joined in 2016. Citizen is therefore not only a Japanese brand: it is a movement supplier with a Swiss arm, and some watches described as Swiss run on machinery the group owns.
What owning Miyota means for everyone else
If you have bought a watch from a small independent brand in the last decade, there is a good chance Citizen made the movement inside it.
The Miyota 8-series is the cheap, tough, widely used automatic: robust, easy to service, and notable for what it lacks, since it does not stop the seconds hand when you pull the crown and its rotor spins freely enough to be audible. The 9-series is the upgrade, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with hacking seconds, hand winding and a slimmer profile. The consequence for Citizen's own watches is pricing power. A company that makes the movement, the case and the crystal can sell a complete watch at a number an assembler cannot reach.
Eco-Drive, and what it actually changes
Eco-Drive is a photovoltaic cell mounted under a dial that has to pass light while still looking like a dial. It charges a rechargeable secondary cell rather than running from a disposable battery. Citizen showed light-powered analog quartz watches in the 1970s and has used the Eco-Drive name since the mid-1990s.
The engineering claim people repeat is that it never needs a battery. The accurate version is more useful. The disposable cell disappears, so the case is not opened every two or three years, and the gaskets and the crown seal are never disturbed by a jeweler working at speed. Citizen has published laboratory results showing an Eco-Drive cell retaining around 80 percent of its storage capacity after 20 years. That is a very long service-free run by any standard.
The accuracy line, and what the numbers mean
Citizen's flagship is The Citizen, the line historically associated with the Chronomaster name in Japan, and its argument is precision rather than decoration.
Ordinary quartz is specified at roughly plus or minus fifteen seconds a month. The Citizen's high-precision Eco-Drive caliber A060 is specified at plus or minus five seconds a year. The caliber 0100, introduced in 2019, is specified at plus or minus one second a year. The number that matters in that last claim is not the one second, it is the word autonomous: the watch is not correcting itself against a radio time signal or a satellite, it is simply keeping time that well, using a thermocompensated oscillator that measures its own temperature and adjusts.

Promaster, and the Diver's marking
Promaster is the tool range: Diver for water, Sky for aviation, Land for the outdoors. The Promaster Diver is the one most people mean, and it has been in production in recognizable form since the late 1980s.
The important detail is the marking rather than the depth. A Promaster diver carries the Diver's designation defined by ISO 6425, which requires condensation testing, salt water resistance, legibility in the dark and a bezel that can only turn one way. A watch labeled only water resistant to 200 meters has not been through any of that. Citizen offers the same case concept in two flavors, a light-powered Eco-Drive version and a mechanical version running a Miyota automatic, and the choice between them is really a choice about whether you want to think about the watch at all.
Where the money goes: titanium and crystals
Citizen has built titanium watches since the 1970s and its Super Titanium is titanium with a surface hardening treatment the company calls Duratect. Citizen states the treated surface is several times harder than stainless steel, which addresses the real weakness of bare titanium: it is light and it marks easily. The crystal is where the money does not go. Citizen fits mineral glass on watches priced where sapphire is the expectation, including much of the Promaster diver range. Read the specification for the individual reference, because the brand fits both and the model name does not tell you which.
Where Citizen is weak
Beyond the crystal, three things come up consistently.
- Case sizes run large. A good deal of the Promaster range sits at 44 mm and above with long lugs, which rules it out for a lot of wrists regardless of how good the watch is.
- The catalog is impenetrable. Reference numbers carry no meaning for a buyer, regional catalogs differ, and two watches that look identical can have different crystals and different calibers.
- Lume is inconsistent. Owners regularly report weaker luminous performance on Citizen dials than on the equivalent Seiko, which is a fair observation across the entry range rather than a published specification.
What it costs to buy, to own, and what comes back
Figures here are indicative US dollars before sales tax, and they move with market and discounting, which on Citizen is often heavy. Outside the US, local tax, import duty and distribution move them again. A standard Eco-Drive sits roughly between $150 and $350. A Promaster diver runs from about $200 to $450, and the BN0150 is the clearest illustration of the spread: it lists at $395 and is commonly sold nearer $225. Super Titanium models sit between about $400 and $900, and The Citizen starts a few thousand dollars up. The caliber 0100 references launched well above that and in limited numbers.
Ownership is the strong suit. There is no battery to change, no winding to worry about and no overhaul schedule, so across a decade the running cost is close to a pressure test and a bracelet or strap. Resale is the weak suit. Light-powered quartz resells poorly, as quartz does across the whole market, and a Citizen bought new should be assumed to lose most of its value immediately. That is a market condition rather than a judgment on the watch, and it is one reason the secondhand Citizen market is a good place to buy and a bad place to sell.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Citizen suits the person who wants the watch to be correct and ready without any involvement: no winding, no setting, no cell changes, no service appointments. It suits travelers and anyone hard on equipment, because the sealed case and the tool range are built for it. It suits a buyer who values a published accuracy figure they can actually check against a phone.
Look elsewhere in three cases. If you want a mechanical watch, Seiko is the better answer at almost every price, and our direct comparison works through it tier by tier. If you want a Japanese automatic specifically, with hacking and hand winding at a lower price than Seiko charges, look at Orient. If what you actually want is something you can abuse and forget for a fraction of the price, Casio answers that better than any Promaster does.
Common follow-up questions
Does an Eco-Drive watch ever need a battery?
Not a disposable one. Light charges a rechargeable secondary cell inside the watch, and Citizen has published laboratory data showing about 80 percent of capacity remaining after 20 years. Eventually that cell degrades and a watchmaker replaces it, which means opening the case, fitting new gaskets and pressure testing. Treat it as one service event in a very long time rather than a routine every two years.
What happens if an Eco-Drive is left in a drawer?
It stops, and that is not a fault. Most calibers hold months of charge in darkness and many add a power-save mode that parks the hands to stretch it further. Bringing it back is a matter of light and patience: a few hours in daylight restarts it, a full charge takes considerably longer. Storing one fully depleted for years is the one thing that genuinely shortens the cell's life.
Is a Miyota movement worse than a Seiko one?
No, they are competing designs at the same price. The Miyota 8-series is inexpensive and durable but does not hack and has a rotor that spins audibly. The 9-series runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, hacks and hand-winds, and is thinner. Seiko's NH35 sits between the two on paper. Which one is in front of you matters more than whose badge is on it.
Why does Citizen still fit mineral crystals?
Cost, and it is the most common complaint about the brand. Mineral glass resists shattering well and scratches far more easily than sapphire, and Citizen fits it on watches that sell for enough that buyers reasonably expect sapphire, including parts of the Promaster diver range. Check the specification rather than the price band, because Citizen fits both across the catalog and does not signal it in the model name.
