Can you overwind an automatic watch?
Short answer
No. The mainspring in an automatic is not anchored to the barrel wall. Its outer end is a slipping bridle that slides once the spring is full, so any extra winding simply slips away. Manual-wind watches are the ones you can force: they stop dead at full wind, and pushing past that stop is what breaks parts.

No, you cannot overwind an automatic watch. Not by wearing it, not by winding the crown, and not by leaving it on a winder for a month. The design makes it impossible: the mainspring simply cannot take more tension than it is built to hold, because its outer end is free to slip once it is full.
The warning about overwinding is real, but it belongs to hand-wound watches, and even there it is usually misunderstood. Here is what is actually going on inside the barrel, and what genuinely does break.
The slipping bridle, and why full wind is a soft ceiling
In a hand-wound watch, the outer end of the mainspring is hooked solidly to the inside wall of the barrel. Wind it and the spring tightens until it physically cannot tighten further. That is the firm stop you feel through the crown, and it is a genuine mechanical limit.
An automatic barrel is built differently. The mainspring is not attached to the wall at all. Its outer end carries a separate curved strip of spring steel, the slipping bridle, pressed outward against the barrel wall by its own springiness. Friction between bridle and wall holds the assembly in place while the spring winds. When the spring reaches full tension, its pull exceeds that friction, the bridle slides around the wall, and a little tension escapes. A specialist braking grease on the barrel wall makes the slipping behave consistently rather than grabbing and releasing at random.
The system has to work this way. A rotor swings whenever you move, with no idea whether the spring is full, so an automatic without a slipping attachment would destroy itself in a day.
Manual-wind watches: the stop you can actually break
Here the risk is real, though it takes more force than most people imagine. Wind a hand-wound watch to firm resistance and keep turning, and the load has to go somewhere. Depending on the watch and how tired its parts are, it goes into one of these:

What people usually mean when they say a watch is overwound
Ninety percent of the time, a watch presented as overwound is a fully wound watch that will not run. The owner winds it, feels tension, sees nothing happen, and concludes that winding was the cause. Almost always it is not. The common reasons a wound watch stays stopped are ordinary service problems:
- Dried or migrated lubricants, especially at the escapement and balance pivots, raising friction until the movement cannot start itself.
- A shock event that displaced or damaged a balance staff pivot, or knocked the hairspring out of shape.
- Dirt and wear in the train after a decade or more without service.
- A broken mainspring, which is the one case where the winding itself has failed, and which usually announces itself by the crown spinning without resistance.
The test is simple. Wind the crown 20 or 30 turns, then rock the watch gently through 90 degrees a few times. A healthy movement with a wound spring starts from that nudge. Hand-winding an automatic: how far is far enough
Most modern automatics can be hand-wound, and doing it is good practice if you sit at a desk all day. Since you will never feel a stop, count instead of feeling. Roughly 15 to 20 crown turns will start a stopped watch and put it well into its reserve; 30 to 40 takes most calibers close to full. Beyond that you are simply dragging the bridle around the barrel wall, which is harmless but pointless. The numbers are broken down in how many turns it takes to wind a watch.
Two calibers to know about: the older Seiko 7S26 cannot be hand-wound at all, so wrist motion is the only option, and Citizen's Miyota 8215 winds by hand but does not stop the seconds hand for setting.

- Automatic: wind it as much as you like. The bridle handles the excess.
- Manual: wind to firm resistance, then stop. Never force past it.
- A wound watch that will not run has a fault, not too much wind.
- Winders cannot overwind either, but that is not a reason to run one.
Common follow-up questions
Can a watch winder overwind my automatic?
No. The bridle slips just as it does on the wrist. The real objection to running a winder constantly is different: it adds running hours, and therefore wear and lubricant aging, to a watch you are not wearing. Run one only for a calendar watch you would rather not reset, at the movement's stated turns per day.
Why does my automatic never feel like it reaches the end?
Because it has no end to reach. Once the spring is full the bridle slides against the barrel wall, and what you feel through the crown is that slipping rather than a stop. It can feel slightly notchy or springy. Around 30 to 40 turns is a sensible ceiling; beyond that you are just spinning the bridle.
Can you overwind a vintage watch?
A vintage hand-wound watch, yes, and it is easier than with a modern one. Fatigued mainsprings, worn ratchet teeth and tired click springs all lower the force needed to cause damage. Wind vintage slowly, off the wrist, and stop early rather than late.
Is a broken mainspring an expensive repair?
The part is cheap, often under twenty dollars for a common caliber. The labor is not, because replacing it means opening the barrel, and any competent watchmaker will service the movement while it is apart rather than reassemble a dirty watch around a new spring. Budget for a service, not a part swap.
