How many turns does it take to wind a watch?

Short answer

Roughly 30 to 40 turns of the crown brings a fully run-down manual-wind watch to full wind, though the exact number varies by caliber. You wind a manual by feel, not by count, stopping the moment the resistance goes firm. An automatic has no stop, so count instead: 15 to 20 turns starts it, 30 to 40 fills it.

For a hand-wound watch that has stopped completely, roughly 30 to 40 turns of the crown will reach full wind, and the useful range across common calibers runs from about 20 to 40. For an automatic, 15 to 20 turns will get a stopped watch running with plenty in reserve, and 30 to 40 takes most of them close to full.

Those numbers are guides, not specifications. The honest answer is that a manual watch tells you when to stop, and an automatic never will, so the two need different habits.

Why there is no single number

The count depends on three things the manufacturer chose long before you got there: how long and how thick the mainspring is, how large the barrel is, and the gear ratio between the crown and the barrel arbor. A watch with a 70 hour reserve, such as Seiko's 6R35, holds far more spring than a 38 hour ETA 2824-2, and it will not fill in the same number of turns. Change the winding ratio and the count changes again, with no effect at all on how long the watch runs.

That is why manufacturers publish power reserve in hours and almost never publish a turn count. Hours are what you experience. Turns are an artifact of the gearing.

Winding a manual watch: feel, not arithmetic

Take the watch off. Winding on the wrist levers the stem sideways against the case tube and wears both, and on a screw-down crown it invites cross-threading. Unscrew the crown fully if it screws down.

Then wind at an unhurried, even pace, using small partial turns between thumb and forefinger rather than heroic full rotations. The resistance builds gradually and then changes character: smooth and consistent becomes firm and unmistakably solid. That is the mainspring reaching the end of its travel. Stop there. The daily case is different from the stopped case. A manual watch worn every day is never fully run down in the morning, so it may take only ten or fifteen turns to reach firm resistance. This is why the widely repeated instruction to give a watch exactly 30 turns every morning is nonsense: on a partly wound watch it drives the spring into its stop, and on a long-reserve watch it falls short.

Hand-winding an automatic: count, because there is no stop

An automatic mainspring ends in a slipping bridle that slides once the spring is full, so the crown will keep turning smoothly for as long as your patience lasts. Nothing bad happens, but nothing useful happens either. Use a count instead.

One caliber-specific note: a few older automatics cannot be hand-wound at all. Seiko's long-running 7S26 has no winding path from the crown, so wrist motion is the only way to start it. Citizen's Miyota 8215 does wind by hand, but its seconds hand keeps running while you set the time.

Shaking is not winding

Swinging a watch back and forth in the air does turn the rotor, which is why the habit persists. It is still the wrong thing to do. The rotor is a heavy weight on a small bearing, sized for the gentle accelerations of an arm. Shaking subjects that bearing to impacts and side loads well outside its design case, and a worn rotor bearing announces itself later as a faint gritty rustle when you rock the watch by your ear.

It is also inefficient. A rotor needs a great many rotations to store what 20 crown turns store in fifteen seconds. If the movement hand-winds, use the crown. If it does not, give the watch 30 to 60 seconds of slow, deliberate wrist rotation, the kind of motion you would use to swirl a glass, and then wear it.

A routine that works

  1. Manual watch: wind at roughly the same time each morning, off the wrist, and stop at firm resistance.
  2. Automatic worn daily and actively: no winding needed. Wear it.

Common follow-up questions

Does it matter which way I turn the crown?

Most watches wind in one direction only, usually clockwise as you look at the crown, and freewheel harmlessly the other way. A few calibers wind in both. You do not need to know which: turn in the direction that produces resistance, and ignore the direction that feels loose.

Should I wind at the same time each day?

It helps. Winding every morning keeps a mechanical watch in the stronger, steadier part of its mainspring torque curve, which is where its rate is most consistent. It also means the watch is never sitting near empty, where amplitude falls and timekeeping wanders.

What if my watch has a power reserve indicator?

Then use it, and forget counting entirely. Wind until the hand reaches the top of its scale, and on a manual watch stop there rather than pushing on. The indicator is driven off the barrel, so it is reading the actual state of the spring rather than estimating.

My watch sat in a drawer for a year. Anything different?

Wind it slowly and pay attention. Lubricants stiffen with age, so the first wind of a long-dormant watch is the moment a fatigued mainspring or a worn click is most likely to give way. If it feels gritty, notchy or unusually stiff, stop and have it looked at before running it.
