What is an automatic watch?
Short answer
An automatic watch is a mechanical watch that winds itself. A weighted rotor pivots as your arm moves, and a small gear train turns that swinging into tension on the mainspring. There is no battery and nothing electronic. Wear it enough and it runs continuously; leave it in a drawer and it stops within a day or two.

An automatic watch is a mechanical watch that winds its own mainspring from the motion of your arm. A semicircular weight called a rotor pivots freely inside the case, and a short train of gears converts its swinging into tension on the spring. That spring is the only power source in the watch. There is no battery, no cell to replace and nothing electronic anywhere in the movement.
Everything else about an automatic is an ordinary mechanical watch. A barrel holds the coiled mainspring, a gear train carries its energy forward, an escapement releases that energy in equal packets, and a balance wheel oscillating several times a second sets the pace. The rotor, and what it actually does
The rotor is deliberately unbalanced. Its mass sits out at the rim, usually in a dense heavy-metal alloy such as tungsten, because the turning effect it can generate rises sharply with distance from the pivot. Gravity holds the weight roughly in place while your arm swings the rest of the watch around it, so relative to the movement the rotor turns.
A swinging weight alternates direction, which is useless for winding on its own. Something has to rectify it. Swiss calibers usually do this with paired reversing wheels containing sprung internal pawls, so whichever way the rotor moves, one wheel drives and the other freewheels. Seiko uses the Magic Lever, a two-clawed rocker driven by an eccentric that pushes with one claw and pulls with the other. Both capture motion in both directions. Older Rolex-style pawl systems wound in one direction only and simply discarded the other half.
How much of your day the system converts into winding depends on how much your arm actually moves, which is why two people can get very different results from the same watch.
Why you cannot overwind an automatic
In a hand-wound watch the outer end of the mainspring is hooked solidly to the barrel wall, so the spring reaches a hard stop at full wind. In an automatic it is not attached at all. The outer end carries a curved strip of spring steel, the slipping bridle, held against the barrel wall by friction. Once the spring is full, the pull exceeds that friction and the bridle slides, releasing the excess.

Power reserve, and what it means in practice
Power reserve is how long a fully wound watch runs before it stops. Most mainstream automatics land somewhere between 38 and 45 hours, which is deliberate: enough to survive a night on the nightstand, not enough to survive a weekend in a drawer. Some newer calibers stretch much further, notably Seiko's 6R35 at a stated 70 hours.

Notice what is not in that table: any accuracy advantage for the rotor. What automatic winding does buy is torque stability. A watch worn daily sits nearer the strong end of its mainspring, and mainspring torque is one of the things that moves rate around. That is a real but modest effect, worth a few seconds a day at most.
Hand-winding, hacking and the small print
Most modern automatics can be wound at the crown and will stop the seconds hand when you pull the crown out to set the time, a feature called hacking. Neither is guaranteed. The long-serving Seiko 7S26 offered neither, so the only way to start one was wrist motion. Citizen's Miyota 8215 winds by hand but does not hack, so the seconds hand keeps sweeping while you set it. The Seiko NH35, which appears in a great many microbrand watches, does both.
Check before you buy if it matters to you. Setting a watch to the second is impossible without hacking, and a movement that cannot be hand-wound is genuinely inconvenient if you rotate through several watches.
Is an automatic right for you?
An automatic suits someone who wears the same watch most days and wants it to keep time without thinking about it. It suits calendar watches particularly well, since a running watch is one you never have to reset. It is the default for dive watches and most sports watches, partly because a crown that gets used less is a crown that stays sealed.
It suits you less well if you rotate through a collection, if you want the thinnest possible watch, or if you want to see the whole movement through the caseback, since the rotor covers half of it. It also carries a running cost: a mechanical service every several years, indicatively $250 to $500 at an independent watchmaker in the US, before sales tax, and $800 to $1,200 or more at a luxury brand's own service center. Common follow-up questions
Does an automatic keep running after I take it off?
Yes, until the stored energy runs out. A watch worn all day and set down at night will usually still be running the next morning, because a full mainspring holds roughly 38 to 45 hours in most calibers. Leave it off for a long weekend and you will come back to a stopped watch.
Do I need a watch winder for an automatic?
Almost never. A winder saves you from resetting a calendar you find annoying, and that is the whole benefit. For a plain time-and-date watch it is a box that adds running hours to a movement you are not wearing. Our answer on whether you need a winder covers the exceptions.
Is an automatic watch waterproof?
That has nothing to do with the winding system. Water resistance comes from the case, gaskets, crystal and crown, and is rated separately. An automatic in a 30 m case is a splash-resistant watch; an automatic in a 200 m dive case is not. See water resistance explained.
How long does an automatic watch last?
Decades, and often much longer, provided it is serviced. The wearing parts are pivots, the mainspring and the lubricants, all of which are replaceable. Watchmakers routinely return 60-year-old automatics to normal running. A quartz module of the same age is more likely to be unobtainable.
