The automatic will not hand wind

Short answer

Check the caliber before anything else. A number of automatic movements have no hand winding capability at all, and turning the crown on one of those does nothing by design. If your caliber should hand wind and does not, the fault is in the keyless works, and that is a bench job rather than a home fix.

Start with the question nobody asks first: does this watch hand wind at all?

Hand winding on an automatic is not free. It requires a winding pinion, a sliding pinion, and the geometry to drive the barrel from the crown as well as from the rotor. Leaving it out saves parts, saves assembly time and saves cost, and a number of very widely sold movements do exactly that. If you own one, nothing is wrong with your watch and there is nothing to repair.

Movements that cannot be hand wound

Named honestly, because this is the answer most people arrive here needing.

The best known are Seiko's 7S26 and 7S36. These went into an enormous number of watches, including much of the Seiko 5 line and the Seiko SKX007, and they provide neither hand winding nor hacking seconds. Turning the crown on a 7S26 accomplishes nothing at all. It is not a defect and it was never advertised otherwise.

Their successors changed this. The 4R35 and 4R36, and the equivalent NH35 and NH36 sold to other brands through Seiko Instruments, added both hand winding and hacking. This is why two Seikos that look alike can behave differently: check which caliber is in yours before concluding anything. Older Orient in-house calibers in the 46-series had neither function; the later F6-series added both, which is the difference between the first and second generations of several of their popular divers.

One thing to be careful about: hacking and hand winding are separate features and they do not always arrive together. The Miyota 8215 hand winds but does not hack. So "my seconds hand does not stop when I pull the crown" tells you nothing about whether the watch hand winds. Test them independently.

If yours is one of these, the starting procedure is to swing it. Rock the watch flat in your palm for 30 to 60 seconds, then set the time and wear it. That is the method the owner's manual gives, and it works.

What winding should feel like when it works

Half the reports of a broken winder are a misreading of normal behavior.

An automatic mainspring is fitted with a slipping bridle: a length at the outer end that grips the barrel wall by friction rather than being hooked to it. When the spring reaches full wind, the bridle slips, releasing tension. That is what prevents the rotor from overwinding the spring during a normal day, and it is discussed further in can you overwind an automatic.

The consequence for hand winding is that you never reach a hard stop. A manual watch stops firmly and unmistakably. An automatic keeps turning indefinitely, with a change in feel as the bridle starts slipping. Owners who expect the manual behavior conclude the winding is not connected. It is.

What working hand winding actually feels like:

  • Definite resistance against your fingers, more than the free-spinning feel of a disconnected crown.
  • A fine ratcheting sound or feel as the click passes over the ratchet wheel teeth.
  • On a stopped watch, the balance starting within 10 to 20 turns.
  • A gradual increase in resistance, then a plateau rather than a stop.

A genuine winding failure

The keyless works is the small group of parts under the dial that decides what the crown does at each position: the winding pinion, the sliding pinion that acts as a clutch, the yoke, and the setting lever. It is the mechanism that turns one crown into a winder, a date setter and a time setter, and when it misbehaves the symptom is almost always "the crown does something other than what it should".

The reversing wheels are a separate story, and the distinction is the useful part. They only ever affect automatic winding, because their job is to convert rotor motion in either direction into one-way winding of the barrel. Contaminated or dried lubricant in the reversers is a well-known cause of a watch that hand winds perfectly and refuses to wind itself on the wrist. What you can check yourself

  1. Push the crown fully in. On a screw-down crown, unscrew it completely first, then confirm it is at its innermost click position. Winding in a setting position does nothing and can cause damage.
  2. Confirm the caliber. If it is a 7S26, 7S36 or an older Orient 46-series, stop. There is no fault.
  3. Listen. Hold the watch to your ear and wind slowly. The ratcheting click is audible on most movements and its absence is meaningful.
  4. Check the crown for wobble. Side-to-side movement suggests a crown or stem problem rather than a movement problem, which is covered in a crown that is stuck.
  5. Try the swing test. If the watch starts and runs when swung, the barrel, train and escapement are fine and the problem is isolated to the crown side.

That last step is genuinely diagnostic and it costs nothing. It cleanly separates a winding problem from a running problem.

What it costs at the bench

All of these require the movement to come out of the case and, for the keyless works, the dial and hands to come off. That is why the labor dominates the parts cost, and why a watchmaker will often recommend folding the repair into a full service.

  • Crown or stem replacement: roughly $120 to $350 fitted, with a pressure test.
  • Keyless works repair or parts replacement: roughly $200 to $450 where the parts are available.
  • Reverser wheels or automatic module service: roughly $150 to $350.
  • Mainspring and barrel replacement: usually done inside a service.
  • Full service on a common Swiss or Japanese three-hander: roughly $250 to $500 at an independent, $350 to $600 at a mainstream brand service center and more again above that.

Figures are indicative US dollars for 2026, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state, and they move substantially by country and by whether the brand supplies parts to independent watchmakers. Our service cost page explains that second variable, which matters more than the first.

There is a real threshold here. On an inexpensive watch built around an NH35 or a Miyota 8215, a complete replacement movement often costs less than a keyless works repair, and a competent watchmaker will tell you so. That is not a criticism of the movement; it is what mass production does to the economics of repair, and it is the same calculation that decides whether any mass-produced movement is repaired or swapped.

What to do next

If your caliber does not hand wind, nothing needs doing. Swing the watch to start it, wear it regularly, and understand that the power reserve is filled by your arm rather than your fingers. If your caliber does hand wind and does not, stop winding it now. The failure modes above get worse with every attempt, and a keyless works that is misaligned is repairable while one whose teeth have been rounded off may not be. Take it to a watchmaker, describe the exact feel at the crown rather than saying it will not wind, and ask whether a service is due anyway. If it is, this repair is close to free.

Common follow-up questions

How do I start a watch that cannot be hand wound?

Swing it. Hold the watch flat in your palm and rock it side to side in a smooth arc for 30 to 60 seconds, or gently swing your wrist. That drives the rotor and puts enough power in the barrel to start the balance. Then set the time and wear it. On a movement without hand winding, this is the intended starting procedure and it appears in the owner's manual as such.

The crown turns and turns and never stops. Is it broken?

Almost certainly not, and this is the most common false alarm. An automatic mainspring is fitted with a slipping bridle that lets it slide against the barrel wall once fully wound, which is what stops a rotor from overwinding it. So an automatic never gives you the firm stop a manual watch does. If you feel resistance and hear a ratcheting click as you turn, it is winding correctly.

It hand winds fine but stops overnight when I do not wear it. What is that?

That points at the automatic winding system rather than the keyless works. The usual cause is contaminated or dried lubricant in the reversing wheels, which stops the rotor transferring energy to the barrel efficiently, so the watch never reaches full wind from wear alone. Can hand winding damage an automatic?

Normal hand winding cannot overwind it, because of the slipping bridle. What does cause damage is forcing the crown when it is not turning freely, and winding while the crown is not fully pushed home, which loads the setting mechanism instead of the winding train. Wind smoothly, in short strokes, with the crown pushed all the way in and screwed down afterwards if the watch has a screw-down crown.
