Tissot vs Hamilton
The verdict
Buy the Hamilton if you want a legible, restrained design with a history you can check, and a case that fits a small wrist. Buy the Tissot if you want an integrated bracelet, a sports case and higher water resistance. The movements are close relatives from the same ETA family, so this is a decision about design, sizing and case engineering rather than about mechanics.

Hamilton
An American archive built in Switzerland, the same ETA architecture under H numbers, and a field watch that does not pretend to be anything else.
These two are owned by the same company, buy movements from the same supplier, sit in the same published segment of that portfolio, and sell at almost the same money. Comparing them on mechanics gets you nowhere, because the mechanics are shared. What differs is the design brief, the sizing and the case engineering.
What each brand actually is
Tissot is the Swatch Group's volume mechanical brand. It has been in Le Locle since 1853, it sells six figures of units a year, and its job is to put a Swiss made automatic on a wrist at the lowest price the group is willing to defend. It does not develop movements from a blank sheet: it draws on ETA, designs the watch, then assembles, tests and distributes it.
Hamilton is the same tier with a different story. Founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892, it made railroad-grade and military watches there, ended American manufacture in 1969 and moved to Switzerland. It is now a Swiss company in Bienne inside the same group. The archive is real and institutionally documented, which is unusual at this price, and it is not a description of where the watch is made today.
The group publishes its own segmentation in its annual reports, and both sit in the Middle Range with Certina and Mido. That is the group's own statement of what each is allowed to be: shared calibers, sourced cases, Swiss assembly, and a price nobody has to defend.

Prices are indicative US figures, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state, and they move. What you pay varies with how heavily the brand is discounted where you live, and outside the US with local tax, import duty and distribution.
The movements, and what eighty hours costs
Both brands reached the same 80 hour figure by the same route, because it is the same engineering. The balance was slowed from 28,800 to 21,600 vibrations per hour, and the barrel and mainspring were reworked to store more energy. A slower balance draws less from the barrel per unit of time, so the same stored energy runs longer. The result is a power reserve of about three days against roughly a day and a half for the calibers this family replaced.
What it costs is theoretical accuracy. A faster balance is less disturbed by shocks and by changes in position. At this price the difference is invisible next to the variance between individual watches leaving the line.
The split that matters is that Hamilton still sells a hand-wound caliber and Tissot effectively does not. The H-50 has no rotor and no date, which is why the Khaki Field Mechanical is 9.5 mm thick and cheap.
Wins on movement choice: Hamilton, because it offers both an automatic and a hand-wound version of the same architecture. On the automatic itself the two are the same watch mechanically, and neither wins.
The regulator question
This applies to both and rarely gets mentioned in a shop.
The Powermatic 80 has no conventional regulator index. On a traditional caliber a watchmaker moves a small lever that changes the working length of the hairspring, and the rate shifts. That lever is not there. The movement is adjusted at the factory on a jig, and parts of the escapement are molded rather than machined, so later adjustment is made at the balance itself and needs a specific tool.
Wins on regulation: neither. Both inherit the same constraint from the same supplier, and an owner who wants a watch held to two seconds a day should be looking a tier up rather than choosing between these two.
The PRX against the Khaki Field and the Jazzmaster
Here is the actual decision. The mechanics are shared, so buy the design.
The PRX revives a 1978 Tissot case: a thin tonneau with an integrated bracelet that flows out of the case instead of attaching through lugs. Executing that well is expensive, because the case and the first links have to be machined to match. It is a sports watch in the 1970s sense: flat, wide, brushed on top, rated to 100 meters, with a sapphire crystal.
The Khaki Field is the opposite argument. A matte case, a high-contrast dial with Arabic numerals at every hour and an inner 24 hour track, sharp lumed hands, nothing else. It comes from Hamilton's own military work rather than a mood board, and the field watch conventions it follows were written for legibility in bad conditions. The Jazzmaster is the dress-sport family, generally around 40 mm, with applied indices, more polishing and the H-40 day-date.
The integrated bracelet is the one hard constraint here. You cannot fit an ordinary strap to a PRX: the gap between the case flanks is 12 mm on the 40 mm and 11 mm on the 35 mm rather than a standard lug width. If you like changing straps, that decides it.
Wins on versatility: Hamilton, on conventional 20 mm lugs. Wins on case and bracelet engineering for the money: Tissot, clearly, in the PRX line and nowhere else in its range.
Sizing and fit
Hamilton offers more genuinely small cases than almost any other Swiss brand, which is worth knowing if you have been told that the standard sizes do not suit you. The Khaki Field Mechanical is published at 38 mm diameter, 9.5 mm thick and 47 mm lug to lug, and Hamilton publishing all three figures is itself unusual. Khaki Field automatics run larger, and the aviation family larger again.
Tissot's answer is narrower. The PRX comes in 35 mm and 40 mm, and the integrated bracelet sets the effective span rather than the lugs, so the first links matter as much as the case. A wide flat case on a thin wrist reads larger than its diameter suggests. Measure before ordering with the size calculator.

Price, discounting and resale
New, Tissot mechanicals sit roughly between $475 and $1,100 and Hamilton mechanicals roughly between $600 and $1,300, with chronographs and larger aviation cases above both. Those overlap so heavily that price is not a deciding factor. Discounting matters more, and it is heavy for both brands in many markets. Figures are indicative US list before sales tax, and they move with market and discounting, and with local tax and duty outside the US.
Secondhand, recent examples of either typically return roughly 45 to 70 percent of the new price. Small Khaki Field references and the PRX sit at the firm end, larger automatics and dress lines at the soft end. Those are ranges, not quotes.
Read that as a wash rather than a contest. Both lose you a similar amount, and what decides your actual loss is what you paid after discount rather than what the list price said, as our guide to value and depreciation sets out. Wins on resale: neither, meaningfully. Treat both as watches you are buying to wear.
Who should buy which
Buy the Hamilton if your wrist is under about 17 cm (6.7 inches), if you change straps, if you want a hand-wound watch, or if a documented history is part of why you want a watch at all.
Buy the Tissot if you want one watch that works on a bracelet with a sports case, if you want 100 meters rather than 50, or if the integrated bracelet look is what you are actually after. The PRX is the reason to consider Tissot and the rest of the range is ordinary by comparison.
Buy neither if you want a certified rate and a silicon balance spring: that begins at Longines, one tier up in the same group and roughly two to three times the money. If you want higher water resistance at this price, Certina uses the same Powermatic 80 in tougher cases.
What this comparison does not settle
It does not settle which brand is better made, because at this level the variance between individual watches is larger than the difference between the brands. Inspect the actual watch: hands at twelve, chapter ring against the markers, dial printing under a loupe. Choose the good example rather than accepting whichever one shipped.
It also does not settle the movement question, because both brands answer to the same supplier. The real comparison at this price is against the Japanese workhorses rather than between two ETA derivatives, and our page on the three common workhorse calibers covers that.
Common follow-up questions
Are the Powermatic 80 and the H-10 the same movement?
Not identical, but they are close relatives. Both descend from ETA's C07 work on the 2824-2 architecture, both run at 21,600 vibrations per hour and both are stated at about 80 hours of reserve. ETA builds each to the ordering brand's specification, so finishing, rotor decoration and adjustment differ. Treat them as the same engineering with different name plates, because that is what they are.
Can a watchmaker regulate either of them?
Ask the workshop before you buy. The extended-reserve ETA calibers used across the group's Middle Range brands are set at the factory and have no conventional regulator index, so adjustment is made at the balance and needs a specific tool that not every independent stocks. It is not an accuracy problem, it is a correctability problem, and it applies to both brands equally.
Which one holds value better?
Neither holds value well, and the gap between them is smaller than the arguments about it. Recent examples of both typically trade secondhand in a range of roughly 45 to 70 percent of new. Small Khaki Field cases and the PRX sit at the firm end of that range. Both are heavily discounted new in many markets, which is what really sets what you lose.
Is one of them better made?
No, and they share the same weaknesses. Clasps and bracelets on both are stamped rather than milled, with no on-the-fly adjustment on most references, and neither carries hand finishing on the movement. Tissot spends more of its budget on case and bracelet tooling in the PRX line. Hamilton spends more on dial design. Inspect the specific watch rather than the brand.
