Can a watch be regulated to run more accurately?

Short answer

Yes. Almost any mechanical watch can be regulated, usually in minutes, by adjusting the effective length of the hairspring or the inertia of a free-sprung balance. It typically costs roughly $60 to $150 as a standalone job. Regulation moves the whole rate up or down; it cannot fix low amplitude, a wide positional spread, or a worn movement.

Yes, and it is one of the cheapest interventions in watchmaking. Regulation changes how fast the balance oscillates, which changes the rate of the watch. On most movements it takes a watchmaker minutes of actual work, and a standalone job typically costs roughly $60 to $150 depending on the shop and whether the caseback is a simple screw-down.

The important part is knowing what regulation is for. It moves an entire rate up or down. It cannot make an inconsistent watch consistent, and paying to regulate a movement whose real problem is friction simply hides the symptom for a while.

What regulation actually changes

The balance swings against the hairspring, and the spring's effective length sets the frequency. Shorten it and the balance oscillates faster, so the watch gains. Lengthen it and the watch loses.

On a traditional movement, a small regulator arm pivots on the balance cock and carries two curb pins that straddle the outer coil of the hairspring. Sliding the arm toward the plus or minus mark changes the length of spring free to breathe, and with it the rate. Better movements add a fine adjustment: a cam, an eccentric screw or a swan-neck spring, all of which make small, repeatable moves possible instead of a hopeful nudge.

Nothing is added or removed. The energy in the mainspring, the friction in the train and the state of the oil are all exactly as they were.

Free-sprung balances

Higher-grade movements often use a free-sprung balance, with no regulator arm at all. The hairspring runs at a fixed working length, and the rate is set instead by moving small weights or screws on the balance rim, which changes the balance's moment of inertia. Moving mass inward speeds the watch up; moving it outward slows it down.

The advantage is stability: with no curb pins there is nothing to shift under shock, and the hairspring is not being pinched. The cost is adjustability. Free-sprung regulation requires the right tool, symmetrical adjustment of opposing weights to keep the balance in poise, and a timing machine to see what is happening. It is bench work, not owner work.

The general rule: rate problems are regulation, energy problems are servicing. Amplitude is what separates them, which is why a timing machine reading is worth having before you authorize anything. What it costs, and when it is free

Standalone regulation at an independent watchmaker typically runs roughly $60 to $150. Some shops do it for less if the watch is already open on the bench for something else, and it is normally included in the price of a full service, which is more like $250 to $500 for a common Swiss automatic and $800 to $1,200 or more for an in-house or luxury caliber. These are US dollar figures quoted before sales tax, which varies by state. Bench rates vary widely between cities and countries, so ask for a quote rather than assuming these numbers.

If the watch is under manufacturer warranty and running outside its published tolerance, this should cost you nothing. Send it to the brand rather than a local watchmaker, because opening the caseback elsewhere is the standard way to lose the warranty.

Doing it yourself

Many movements with a regulator arm can be adjusted by an owner, and people do it successfully. Be clear about the risks first. The hairspring is a few hundredths of a millimeter thick and permanently ruined by a bend or a fingerprint. A slipped tool marks the balance cock. Opening a caseback without the right opener damages the gasket and the water resistance with it, and a case that has not been pressure tested afterward is no longer a swimming watch.

If you go ahead: work at full wind, move the arm in the smallest increments the regulator allows, and re-measure over 24 hours rather than judging from a timing machine snapshot. Do not attempt beat error correction, which usually means removing the balance and rotating the collet, unless you have the tools and the practice. And do not try to regulate a free-sprung balance at all.

How to ask for the job

Say what you measured, over how long, and how you wear the watch. Ask for the rate to be set close to zero in the positions you actually use, for beat error above about 0.5 ms to be corrected if the movement allows it, and for the positional spread to be reported back to you. If amplitude is low, ask whether regulation is worth doing at all before a service. A watchmaker who answers those questions specifically is the one to leave the watch with.

Common follow-up questions

Can a quartz watch be regulated?

Some can. Certain quartz movements include a trimmer capacitor or an electronic inhibition adjustment that a watchmaker can tune, and many modern ones cannot be adjusted at all. In practice it is rarely worth doing: a quartz watch that is genuinely out by more than its rating usually has a fault rather than a setting that needs nudging.

Will regulating my watch void the warranty?

Work by an unauthorized watchmaker can void a manufacturer warranty, and opening the caseback is normally the trigger. If the watch is under warranty and running outside its published tolerance, send it to the brand or the authorized dealer instead. Regulation is usually covered free during the warranty period.

How long does a regulation take?

The adjustment itself is minutes. Doing it responsibly is not: a watchmaker should measure in several positions, adjust, then let the watch settle and re-measure, which is why many shops keep it for a few days. If somebody hands it back in ten minutes, they have set one position and hoped.

How often does a watch need regulating?

Not on a schedule. A well-adjusted movement should hold its rate for years, and drifting rates are a symptom rather than routine maintenance. Regulation is normally done once after purchase, if the factory setting does not suit how you wear the watch, and again as part of each full service.
