Citizen Promaster Diver (BN0150 and BN0151)
The verdict
A genuine ISO-grade diver's watch that never needs a battery change and keeps time to about fifteen seconds a month. It is bought for function, not finesse: the case is a broad 44 mm, the crystal is mineral rather than sapphire, and the finishing is basic. If you want a slim watch, a sapphire crystal or a mechanical movement, buy something else.

The Promaster Diver is Citizen's cheapest serious dive watch and one of the few at its price that is built to a diving standard rather than a diving style. It is a 44 mm stainless steel case with a one-way bezel, a plain black or blue dial, a date at four o'clock and a polyurethane strap. Under the dial sits a solar panel. There is no winding, no battery door and no service schedule for the power source. You wear it, daylight falls on it, and it runs.
Two reference families cover the same watch in different colors: BN0150 is black, BN0151 blue. Same case, same caliber, same rating, so everything below applies to either. Citizen has sold the design since the mid 2010s with only minor strap and bracelet changes, so a used one from several years ago is functionally the watch on sale now.

What Eco-Drive actually is
The marketing line is that the watch never needs a battery. That is true and it is also slightly misleading, because there is certainly a cell in there. What Eco-Drive means in engineering terms is a two-stage system. A photovoltaic cell sits directly beneath the dial and converts any light falling on it into current. That current charges a rechargeable secondary cell, which Citizen specifies in its manual as a manganese dioxide lithium cell. The quartz movement draws from that cell, not from the panel. Light tops up a reservoir; the reservoir runs the watch.
This changes what happens when the light stops. A pure solar watch would die in a dark room; this one runs about six months from a full charge with the dial never seeing daylight. Citizen's published table for the E168 is unusually specific: two minutes of direct sunlight buys a day of running, eighteen minutes restarts a dead watch, and twelve hours in full sun charges it completely. Under indoor lighting at 500 lux, four hours buys a day, which is why a watch worn under a long sleeve can drift down rather than up.
An overcharge prevention function means a sunny windowsill will not cook the cell, though the manual warns separately about heat above about 60 degrees Celsius. The DIVER'S marking, and what it buys
Most watches with a rotating bezel and a big depth number are dive-styled, not divers'. The distinction is set by ISO 6425, and the thing to look for is the wording DIVER'S followed by a depth, which the standard reserves for watches that meet it. This Promaster carries that marking. Citizen's own support site treats it as the deciding test, routing owners of "models with DIVER'S shown on the dial or case back" to a separate divers' instruction manual rather than the general one.
What the standard adds over an ordinary pressure rating is not depth. It is a set of fitness requirements: a protected elapsed-time bezel that cannot rotate accidentally, readability of the time and of the running seconds at 25 centimeters in total darkness, salt water resistance, magnetic and shock resistance, and testing of every individual watch rather than a sample. One honest caveat. Marking practice varies by market and by production run, so check the dial of the watch actually in front of you rather than trusting a model name. The marking is the claim; the model name is not.
How it wears
Forty-four millimeters wears smaller than the number, but not small. The saving grace is a lug to lug figure of roughly 48 to 49 mm, short for a case this wide, and lugs that turn down sharply. From about 17 cm of wrist, roughly 6.7 inches, it sits properly; between 16 and 17 cm (6.3 to 6.7 inches) it is wearable but visibly large; below 16 cm, under about 6.3 inches, it overhangs. At about 12 mm the case is genuinely slim for a 200 m diver, and it goes under a shirt cuff without a fight. The supplied polyurethane strap is thin, slightly stiff out of the box and long enough to clear a 5 mm wetsuit sleeve; it is the first thing many owners replace. At 20 mm the lug width is the most common size there is, so strap options are unlimited. Bracelet versions add weight without changing the case.
What it is good at
Three things, and they are the right three for a tool watch. It is accurate without attention, at a rated fifteen seconds a month against the several seconds a day you would accept from a mechanical watch of any price. It is sealed, because nothing has to open it. And it is cheap enough to take into salt water without doing arithmetic first, which is the point of owning a dive watch rather than admiring one.
The lume is good rather than exceptional: bright on entry, legible through a typical recreational dive, faded well before morning, which our guide to lume explains. The bezel is a firm 60-click unidirectional ratchet, easy to grip with gloves.
What is wrong with it
The crystal is mineral, not sapphire. On a watch designed to be knocked against boat ladders, that is the compromise you will see first, and it is the single change most owners wish Citizen would make. Our comparison of sapphire, mineral and acrylic sets out how much harder sapphire actually is.
Beyond that: the finishing is functional, with a brushed case and a printed aluminum bezel insert that chips if you hit it hard, and the date sits at four o'clock, which some people find unbalanced. Check whether your particular reference has a screw-down crown, because the family is not consistent. And 44 mm rules the watch out for a large share of wrists, with no smaller version of the same design to fall back on.
The one genuine unknown is the secondary cell. Citizen does not publish a replacement interval, and the practical record of the Eco-Drive line, on sale since the 1990s, is that these cells commonly run well past a decade. They are still consumables, and when one fails it is a service center job. Citizen's parts stocking policy is generally seven years from the end of production, which is the figure that actually constrains a very old Eco-Drive rather than the cell itself.
What it costs to buy, and to own
Treat every figure here as indicative and moving. Citizen lists the BN0150-28E at around $395 in the US, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state, and before the discounting that is routine on this brand. Authorized dealers and the larger online retailers frequently sell it well below list, and it is common to find it around $225, occasionally lower in a sale. List prices in other countries are set separately and move with local tax, import duty and distribution, so check the figure where you actually intend to buy rather than converting from this one.
Used, expect roughly $120 to $180 for a clean example, less if the crystal is scratched or the strap is perished. A widely produced quartz diver does not appreciate, and value retention is not the reason to buy it.
Ten-year running cost is where the Eco-Drive argument lands. There is no battery to change, so the only recurring item is Citizen's recommended water resistance inspection and gasket replacement every two to three years, which typically runs a modest workshop fee rather than a service bill. Budget for perhaps three or four seal checks across a decade, plus one strap. The alternatives, and when each is the better answer
If you want a mechanical dive watch at a similar level of intent, the Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300 gives you sapphire, a ceramic bezel, 300 m and a Swiss automatic, at roughly four times the money and with a service bill every three or four years. It is the better watch; it is not the better value.
If you want a mechanical diver at a similar price and a similar level of intent, the Seiko Prospex Turtle is the obvious comparison: cheaper to buy, worse at keeping time, better at holding value. Buy it if you want a dive-standard watch that keeps accurate time with no maintenance ritual, your wrist is 17 cm, about 6.7 inches, or larger, and you would rather spend the money on the diving than on the watch. Buy something else if you want sapphire, if you want a mechanical movement to look at, or if a 44 mm case will not sit flat on you.
Common follow-up questions
Will an Eco-Drive ever need a battery change?
Not in the sense a quartz watch does. The cell inside is rechargeable and is charged by the solar panel under the dial, so it is never swapped on a schedule. It can still degrade after enough years of charge and discharge cycles, and at that point it is replaced by a service center as a repair, not as routine maintenance. Plan for a possible cell replacement somewhere beyond the first decade, not before it.
Can I actually dive with it?
Yes, within the limits Citizen sets. The instruction manual for this watch describes it as a scuba diver's watch usable with air tanks, and explicitly excludes helium-enriched atmospheres and saturation diving. It also tells you to check before every dive that the crown is pushed home, the bezel turns, the strap is secure and the seconds hand is moving normally rather than in two-second steps.
What happens if I leave it in a drawer for a year?
It stops. A full charge lasts about six months, and before it stops the seconds hand starts jumping in two-second intervals as a warning, with roughly four days left at that point. Recovery is simple: put the dial in daylight. About eighteen minutes of direct sun restarts a fully discharged watch, and twelve hours brings it back to full. You then reset the time and date.
Is the mineral crystal a real problem?
It is the most visible cost-saving on the watch. Mineral glass scratches at a much lower hardness than sapphire, so a Promaster that has been worn hard for a few years usually shows fine surface marks that a sapphire watch would not have. It is also cheaper to replace when it does get damaged. Whether that trade is acceptable depends on how much the watch will be knocked about.
