Citizen Eco-Drive

The verdict

A solar cell under the dial charges a rechargeable lithium cell, which runs a quartz movement holding about plus or minus 15 seconds a month. Fully charged, most calibers run about six months in total darkness. There is no battery to change every few years, but there is a cell that eventually needs a service center, and the light it wants is daylight, not lamplight.

Eco-Drive is not a movement in the sense that the rest of this section uses the word. It is a power system that Citizen fits across dozens of different calibers, from a two hand dress watch to a satellite-synchronized chronograph. Underneath it, the thing actually measuring time is an ordinary quartz oscillator. What Eco-Drive changes is where the electricity comes from.

That distinction matters when you compare it to anything. An Eco-Drive watch is not competing with a Swiss automatic on movement architecture. It is competing on what an owner has to do, and on what it costs over twenty years.

How the power path works

There are three parts, in series.

  1. A photovoltaic cell sits under the dial. The dial is made to pass light through to it, which is why Eco-Drive dials often have a slightly different texture and why very dense or very dark dials tend to charge more slowly.
  2. The cell charges a rechargeable secondary cell. Citizen's own specification sheets name it a manganese dioxide lithium cell, one piece. This is a rechargeable component, not a disposable battery, and the movement includes an overcharging prevention function that stops charging when the cell is full.
  3. The secondary cell runs a quartz movement. Everything downstream is conventional: an oscillator, a divider circuit, a stepper motor, hands.

Nothing in that chain is exotic. What Citizen has done well is the integration, and the fact that it has kept the same system running across the whole range since the late 1970s, so parts, expertise and service routes exist everywhere.

How much light it actually needs

This is where marketing and physics part company. Citizen publishes charging tables in every Eco-Drive manual, and they are refreshingly blunt: fluorescent and interior lighting do not have enough illumination to charge the cell efficiently.

The shape of that table is the important part, and it holds across the range even though the exact numbers differ by caliber. Light intensity falls off a cliff indoors, and charging time rises accordingly. Three minutes of sun does what two and a half hours of office lighting does.

Citizen also sets limits on the other side. Do not charge above about 60 degrees Celsius, and keep at least 50 centimeters from an incandescent or halogen lamp, because heat, not light, is what damages the dial and the cell.

Running in the dark, and power save

A fully charged Eco-Drive keeps running with no light at all. Citizen's tables give about six months for most calibers, and about a year for some. That is the number people mean when they say a solar watch has a power reserve.

Before it stops, it warns you. The seconds hand starts moving once every two seconds instead of once a second, which is unmistakable once you have seen it. Citizen gives about four days from the start of that warning until the watch stops entirely. On models without a seconds hand the minute hand jumps once a minute instead.

Many calibers also carry a power save function, which is a different thing. When the photovoltaic cell has generated no power for a set period, the hands stop to save current while the movement keeps counting time internally. Expose the dial to light and the hands run forward to the correct time on their own. A watch in power save is not a stopped watch, and this is the single most misunderstood Eco-Drive behavior.

Accuracy, and the movement underneath

Citizen publishes an average monthly accuracy of plus or minus 15 seconds when the watch is worn at normal temperatures, which it defines as 5 to 35 degrees Celsius. That works out to roughly half a second a day.

Two honest points about that figure. It is a typical quartz specification rather than a good one: high accuracy quartz movements are held to a few seconds a year, and radio or satellite synchronized watches sidestep the question entirely by resetting themselves. And it is unrelated to Eco-Drive. The solar cell does not make the quartz more accurate; it only removes the battery. Against anything mechanical, the gap is not a contest. The cell, and what it costs later

Citizen's marketing says Eco-Drive eliminates the need to change the battery, and its manuals say no periodical battery replacement is needed. Both are true and both are narrower claims than they sound.

A rechargeable lithium cell is not eternal. It loses capacity with age and charge cycles, and the way you will notice is that the watch no longer runs six months in a drawer, then no longer runs two weeks. That is a service part replacement, not a battery change: Citizen's advice is that any work inside the case goes to a service center, and on a diver or any watch with serious water resistance that is not optional, because the case has to be pressure tested afterwards. Citizen does not publish an expected service life for the cell in its global support material, and we are not going to invent one. What Citizen does publish is more useful: an inspection recommendation every two or three years, a gasket replacement interval of two or three years, and a warning that a watch may become unrepairable once parts run out at the end of a model's production run. The gaskets, not the cell, are what will actually bring your Eco-Drive into a workshop first.

Against a five year battery quartz

This is the comparison that matters, and it is closer than the marketing suggests.

Eco-Drive wins on the thing that actually goes wrong, which is a forgotten watch with a dead battery leaking inside the case. It wins on convenience for anyone who goes outside. The conventional quartz wins on repair access, because every high street can change a battery and very few can order a Citizen secondary cell, and it wins on cost if the watch is cheap enough that a service center visit is not worth the fare.

Known weaknesses

  • Indoor charging is genuinely slow. Citizen's own numbers say so. A desk worker with long sleeves can flatten one over a winter.
  • The cell is not a high street part. When it goes, the watch goes back to Citizen or a Citizen-authorized workshop, wherever you are.
  • Old models can become unrepairable. Citizen states this plainly for any of its watches once parts stop being made.
  • The dial has to transmit light, which constrains what a designer can do with it and is why a very few Eco-Drive dials look slightly different from their non-solar equivalents.

Which watches use it, and who should buy one

Eco-Drive runs under most of Citizen's catalogue, from thin dress watches to the Promaster Diver, which is the model that makes the strongest case for the technology: a 200 meter diver whose case never has to be opened for a battery is a better sealed object than one that does. Buy an Eco-Drive if you want a watch that keeps good time, needs nothing from you, and will not be ruined by two years in a drawer. Buy it especially for a diver or a travel watch. Do not buy one expecting the accuracy of a thermocompensated quartz, expecting a local shop to service it, or expecting light-powered to mean maintenance-free: the gaskets age on the same schedule as everyone else's. If you are choosing between this and something mechanical, the honest framing is that they answer different questions. A Miyota 8215 from the same parent company will lose a minute a week and needs winding, a Sellita SW300-1 costs several times as much and needs servicing, and a Powermatic 80 buys you eighty hours off the wrist rather than six months. Common follow-up questions

Will my Eco-Drive charge under office lighting?

Slowly, and Citizen says so itself. Its charging tables put ordinary interior lighting at about 500 lux, where a typical caliber needs around two and a half hours of exposure to bank one day of running, and hundreds of hours to fill an empty cell. Direct sunlight at 100,000 lux does the same day of running in about three minutes. Office light will keep a worn watch going. It will not rescue a flat one.

Does the rechargeable cell ever need replacing?

Eventually, yes, and Citizen does not publish a service life figure for it in its global support material. What it does say is that the cell is rechargeable rather than periodically replaced, and that any work inside the case should go to a service center. Treat it as a service part with a life measured in many years, not as a consumer battery, and expect the first symptom to be a shorter run in the dark rather than a sudden stop.

What happens if I leave it in a drawer for a year?

It stops, and nothing is harmed. Put it in light and it starts again, though on models without the quick start function it can take a while to move at all. Citizen's advice is to store the watch where light reaches the dial rather than in a dark box, and on models with a power save function the hands will park themselves and the movement will keep counting time internally until light returns.

Is Eco-Drive more accurate than a mechanical watch?

By a very large margin. Plus or minus 15 seconds a month is roughly plus or minus half a second a day. A good mechanical automatic is doing well at five seconds a day, and a certified chronometer is allowed minus four to plus six. The comparison is not close and never has been. What a mechanical watch offers is something other than accuracy.
