Keyless works

Definition

The mechanism on the dial side of a movement that switches the crown between winding the mainspring, setting the date and setting the hands.

The keyless works is the group of parts, sitting mostly on the dial side of the movement, that decides what the crown does. Pushed in, the crown winds the mainspring. Pulled fully out, the same stem sets the hands. On many watches an intermediate click advances the date or another calendar display. The name is historical: before stem winding became normal in the second half of the 19th century, a pocket watch was wound and set with a separate key, and a watch that needed no key was "keyless".

The design is usually credited to Jean Adrien Philippe, who developed a combined winding and setting mechanism worked from the pendant in 1842 and patented it in 1845, the year he went into partnership with Antoine Norbert de Patek. Before that, the keyhole was a hole in the case for dust and moisture. Sealing a case properly only became possible once the key went away.

What is inside

The stem carries a squared section that drives the winding pinion and a groove that the setting lever sits in. A sliding pinion, also called the clutch or castle wheel, slides along the stem square and is pushed back and forth by a yoke. A detent spring, sometimes called the jumper, holds the whole assembly in each defined position and gives you the click you feel.

Winding runs from the crown through the winding pinion to the crown wheel and then the ratchet wheel on top of the barrel arbor, with a click preventing the spring unwinding backwards. Pull the crown out and the sliding pinion disengages from the winding train and meshes instead with the setting wheels, which drive the hands through the cannon pinion. Many movements add a hacking lever here, a thin spring that touches the balance rim in the fully out position and stops the watch so you can set it to a time signal.

One part explains a common repair. The stem is retained by the setting lever, held by a screw or a spring detent reached from the movement side. Removing the stem means pressing or backing off that detent, never pulling harder; a stem that comes out in your hand usually means it was pulled while that detent was worn or loose.

What each crown position does

Most modern three-hand date movements use a three-position stem. Fully in, the crown winds. One click out is the quickset date, and on a day-date caliber turning the crown one way advances the date and the other way the day. Fully out sets the hands, usually with hacking. A no-date movement has only two positions, and a screw-down crown effectively adds a position before all of them, in which the crown is threaded to the tube and does nothing at all.

The quickset position is the one to treat with respect. Between roughly 9pm and 3am the calendar mechanism is already engaged and loaded, and forcing the quickset then can chip a date wheel tooth. Why it matters

This is the only part of the movement you touch, and you touch it every day. It follows that the keyless works is among the most common repair jobs in a workshop. A crown that spins without winding, a stem that will not stay in position, or a watch that sets in one direction only usually points here: a worn stem square, a broken yoke or detent spring, or a chewed sliding pinion.

None of those are catastrophic and none require a new movement, but they are bench work. A crown and stem replacement is an indicative $120 to $350 in the United States before sales tax, varying with whether the crown is a generic part or a branded screw-down one; treat that as a shape rather than a quote. If the crown is stuck, or will not thread back down, work through a stuck crown and a crown that will not screw down before applying force, because the failures that follow are case repairs.

In practice

Wind at a steady pace and stop at firm resistance rather than forcing another turn. That advice is for a manual watch: an automatic has a slipping bridle in the barrel, so hand-winding one never reaches a hard stop and you cannot overwind it. Push the crown fully home after setting, and on a screw-down crown take up the threads gently, since a cross-threaded stem tube is a case repair rather than a movement one.

Common confusions

Keyless works is not the motion works. The motion works is the small gear stack under the dial that turns the minute hand into an hour hand at a twelve to one ratio. The two sit next to each other and share the cannon pinion, but the motion works runs constantly while the keyless works only does anything when you touch the crown.

It is not the automatic winding module either. Automatic winding lives on the back of the movement under the rotor and feeds the same ratchet wheel. A watch with a dead rotor still hand-winds through a healthy keyless works, and a watch with broken keyless works can still be wound by wearing it.
