Can I wear a mechanical watch every day?
Short answer
Yes. A modern mechanical watch is built to be worn, and daily wear does not shorten its life in any way that should change your decision. What daily wear does is expose it to shocks, magnetic fields, water and sweat, and add a service bill every five to ten years. Four or five habits remove most of that risk.

The question usually comes from somebody who has just spent real money and is now worried about ruining it. The short version is that a modern mechanical watch is a durable object designed to be worn, and treating it as fragile costs you the use of it for no benefit.
The longer version is that daily wear is not free. It exposes the watch to five things: shock, magnetism, water, sweat and time. Four of them can be managed with habits that take no effort. The fifth is a bill you should know about before you buy rather than after.
Shock: what actually breaks
The vulnerable part is the balance staff, a steel axle with pivots thinner than a hair. Shock protection systems let the balance jewel move under impact and return, and essentially every mechanical watch made in the past seventy years has some version of it.
ISO 1413 defines what "shock resistant" means: the watch takes an impact intended to represent a fall of about one meter onto a hard surface, and afterward it must still run within a defined change of rate. Read that carefully. The criterion is that the watch survives a realistic household accident, not that nothing inside it is disturbed, and one meter onto a floor is far less energy than a watch swung against a steel bench or a stone wall. In practice, ordinary life almost never breaks a watch. The events that do are sharp, localized and usually recognizable at the moment they happen: a hammer, a dropped weight, a fall onto tile, a car door. That is the list to design your habits around, not desk work and commuting.
The 100 m rule
If you want a watch you never have to think about around water, buy 100 m or better. That is not because you will ever be 100 meters down. Depth ratings are static pressure tests done in a laboratory on a new watch, and real use adds motion, temperature swings and aging gaskets, so the number needs headroom to mean anything.
The practical scale is short. A 30 m watch handles rain and hand washing. A 50 m watch survives a splash and a careless moment. A 100 m watch swims without drama, and 100 m is also the floor ISO 6425 sets for a certified divers' watch, which tells you the standards bodies regard it as the threshold of serious. Two habits do the rest. Do not shower in it, because hot water and soap attack gaskets faster than pressure ever will. And rinse it in fresh water after the sea, because dried salt in a bracelet and around the crown threads is abrasive and holds moisture against the metal, as our note on salt water explains.
The screw-down crown, and the habit it requires
A screw-down crown threads into the case tube and compresses its gasket against the tube wall. It is the single most effective piece of sealing on a normal watch, and it only works when it is screwed home.
This matters because the crown is the one seal you open regularly. Every time you set the time or wind the watch, you unscrew it, and every time you finish you have to remember to screw it back. A crown left standing proud after setting the date is how most water gets into most watches. The habit is simple: after any interaction with the crown, push and turn until it stops, then check it once. Never operate the crown with wet hands, and never do it in the shower or at the poolside.
Sweat, and the parts that corrode
Sweat is dilute salt water with skin oils in it, and it collects exactly where you cannot see: under the bracelet end links, inside the clasp, in the gap between the case back and the case. Stainless steel resists it well but not indefinitely, and the parts that suffer first are the spring bars, the small screws in a bracelet, and the case back gasket.
The maintenance is trivial and most owners never do it. Every few weeks, take the watch off, wipe the case back and the underside of the bracelet with a damp cloth, dry it, and check the bracelet screws are still tight. On a water-resistant watch with the crown screwed down you can go further and run the bracelet under a tap. A leather strap is the exception: sweat destroys it from the inside, and a strap worn daily in a warm climate is a consumable that lasts months rather than years.
Magnetism in an ordinary day
Magnetized hairspring coils cling together, shortening the effective spring and making the watch gain, sometimes minutes a day. The everyday sources are stronger than they used to be: the magnetic clasps on laptop and tablet covers, phone charging pads and magnetic phone mounts, handbag clasps, speaker drivers and the magnetic tool trays in a workshop.
None of it damages the watch permanently. A watchmaker passes it over a demagnetizer for a few seconds and the fault is gone, usually for nothing or close to it. The habit worth forming is simply not to leave the watch resting on a laptop lid, a speaker or a charging pad overnight. When to take it off
A short list covers nearly all the real risk:
- The gym. Barbells, dumbbells and machine frames deliver exactly the sharp, hard impacts that displace a hairspring, and a bracelet trapped between a bar and a rack is how cases get dented.
- DIY and the garage. Hammering, drilling and impact drivers transmit repeated shock through the wrist, and solvents attack gaskets and strap adhesives.
- Racquet and contact sports. Golf and tennis are worse than they look: the acceleration at the end of a swing is significant, and a wrist that takes a fall takes the watch with it.
- Anything with a magnet or an ultrasonic bath. MRI rooms, magnetizers, large speakers and ultrasonic cleaners are all avoidable in a moment.
- Gardening and beach days. Grit is abrasive, and sand in a bezel or a clasp does slow, invisible damage.
Everything else, including swimming in a 100 m watch with the crown home, is ordinary use. The point of this list is not caution for its own sake. It is that five minutes of taking the watch off avoids most of what a repair bill is made of.
The servicing arithmetic
This is the cost people underestimate. Published intervals run from about three years at one end to about ten at the other, and the honest approach is to service when the watch asks: a shrinking power reserve, a rate that has drifted and will not regulate back, or moisture under the crystal. A watch keeping good time on a full wind does not need work because a brochure says so.
The bill, when it comes, runs roughly $250 to $500 at a competent independent and roughly $350 to $900 at a brand service center for a simple automatic, before sales tax and before shipping. Chronographs run higher, commonly $700 to $1,200, and a complicated in-house caliber higher still. Spread across an interval, that is somewhere between $35 and $100 a year on a simple watch and considerably more on a complicated one. The arithmetic changes the advice at the bottom of the market. A service costing $300 on a watch that cost $350 is not a rational repair, and most owners of inexpensive automatics run them until they stop and replace them. Who should do something else
Wear it daily if you want to, and be aware that daily wear on a bracelet in a warm climate will polish the softer edges of a case in a way you will notice in a few years. That is patina to some owners and damage to others, and it is worth knowing which one you are before the first scratch.
Choose differently in three situations. If your work involves repeated impact, strong magnetic fields or aggressive chemicals, a mechanical watch is the expensive way to learn that. If a several-hundred-dollar repair would be a genuine problem, the running cost is a real argument for quartz, which needs a battery and a gasket rather than a strip-down. And if you would spend the year worrying about scratching it, buy the watch you will actually wear and keep the other one for occasions. A watch in a drawer still ages, and it does not tell you the time.
Common follow-up questions
Does wearing it every day wear the movement out faster than rotating several watches?
Slightly, and less than people assume. Running the movement adds mechanical wear at the pivots, but the dominant cause of a service becoming necessary is lubricant degradation, and oils age with time rather than with running. A collection of six watches worn in rotation does not get six times the service interval. It gets six watches all aging at once.
Is it worth buying a second, cheaper watch for rough days?
It is one of the few genuinely rational purchases in this hobby. A quartz or a resin-cased digital costs a fraction of a service bill and removes the whole question of whether to wear the good watch to the gym, the garage or the beach. It also gives you something to wear while the mechanical one is away for six to ten weeks.
Should I take it off at night?
Your choice, with two small points. Sleeping in a watch is the most common way to knock it against a headboard or a wall, and an automatic left off overnight may not have enough reserve to run until morning if your days are sedentary. Neither is a reason to change what you do. If the watch stops, wind it and set it.
Is a mechanical watch a bad choice for a physical job?
For most trades it is a compromise rather than a mistake, but for a few it is genuinely the wrong tool. Repeated impact through the wrist, chemical exposure, hospital MRI environments and heavy magnetic equipment all argue for something cheap and replaceable. A mechanical watch will survive a lot, and it will still be the more expensive thing to break.
