How often should a mechanical watch be serviced?

Short answer

Most manufacturers publish an interval between roughly three and ten years, with Rolex quoting about ten and Seiko about three to four. Treat the published figure as an outer limit rather than a schedule. Service when the watch tells you to: a shorter power reserve, a rate you cannot regulate out, a gritty crown, or any moisture at all.

There is no service light on a mechanical watch, which is why the question gets asked so often. The honest answer has two halves: manufacturers publish intervals between roughly three and ten years, and your watch will tell you when it actually needs attention long before the outer end of that range arrives.

Servicing exists because of oil. Steel and synthetic ruby will outlast you. The film of lubricant between them will not. It thins, spreads by capillary action away from the point it was placed, oxidizes on contact with air, and eventually dries to a varnish that increases friction instead of reducing it. All of that happens whether the watch runs or sits in a drawer.

What the manufacturers actually publish

The numbers vary more than most owners expect, and the spread is not really about quality. It reflects different assumptions about lubricants, sealing and how the brand expects the watch to be used.

Read those figures as what they are: technical guidance with a commercial edge, written for average use. Swimming, humidity, a chronograph you run daily, and knocks on a workbench all shorten the real interval. A desk-worn dress watch in a dry climate stretches it.

Symptoms that mean service now

These override any calendar. If you notice one of them, book the watch in rather than waiting for a round number of years.

  • The power reserve has shortened. A watch that used to run 40 hours off the wrist and now stops at 24 is losing energy to friction. This is the earliest symptom most owners can spot without equipment.
  • The rate has drifted and will not regulate out. Rule out magnetism first, because that is free to fix and produces the same complaint.
  • It stops but restarts when you shake it. Amplitude is critically low. Stop wearing it.
  • The crown feels gritty, notchy or stiff. Dry keyless works or debris in the tube, and forcing it takes the stem with it.
  • Condensation under the crystal. Not a service question but an emergency: water in a movement causes rust, and rust does not stop when the watch dries.
  • Rotor noise or rattling. Loose metal inside a movement causes damage every hour it keeps running.

The case for running it until it drifts

Plenty of experienced owners never service on a schedule. Their argument is straightforward: opening a healthy movement introduces risk, costs money, and resets nothing that needed resetting. Every service means new gaskets, a new pressure test and a technician handling parts that were working perfectly.

The counter-argument is the repair bill. A pivot running dry in its jewel no longer floats on a film, it cuts. Hardened steel against ruby, with metal dust acting as an abrasive, wears an oval into a round hole. At that point you are buying a balance staff, a jewel, possibly a wheel, plus the labor to fit them. A service costs a roughly fixed amount; neglect costs an open-ended one.

The workable middle position is a timing check every couple of years. A watchmaker reads amplitude, rate and beat error on a timing machine in a few minutes, often for free, and degraded oil shows up there long before you notice anything on the wrist. What it costs, and how to budget for it

A full service means complete disassembly, staged ultrasonic cleaning, inspection, fresh lubrication at specified points, a new mainspring and gaskets, regulation in multiple positions, a pressure test and several days on the bench. That is why it is expensive relative to the object.

Expect roughly $250 to $500 at a competent independent watchmaker for a simple three-hand automatic, and typically more at a brand service center: around $350 to $600 for a mainstream Swiss brand, and closer to $800 to $1,200 at Omega or Rolex, where turnaround is also often measured in months rather than weeks. Those are US figures before sales tax, and bench rates, parts pricing and local taxes differ from one country to the next, so treat the bands as an order of magnitude. Chronographs, calendars and anything with a complicated automatic module cost more, sometimes substantially. Any figure quoted before the case is opened is provisional.

Common follow-up questions

Does a watch in a drawer need servicing?

Eventually, yes. Oils thin, migrate and oxidize on a clock rather than an odometer, so a watch stored for fifteen years has aged its lubricants even though its pivots have not turned. Have any long-stored watch checked before you put it back into regular wear.

Can I just get it regulated instead of serviced?

Only if the movement is otherwise healthy. Regulation adjusts the effective length of the hairspring, which changes the rate but does nothing about thickened oil or a worn pivot. If a watchmaker has to move the regulator a long way to correct a watch that used to be fine, the underlying cause is usually lubrication, not adjustment.

Is it worth servicing an inexpensive watch?

Often not, and there is no shame in the arithmetic. A full service on a $200 Seiko can cost more than the watch, and shop rates vary by market, so many owners run those movements until they stop and then replace them. Servicing makes financial sense once the watch is worth several times the labor, and it always makes sense for anything with sentimental or collectible value.

How do I find out when my watch was last serviced?

Check the papers, any service invoice, and the inside of the caseback, where some watchmakers scratch a date code. Failing all three, assume it has not been done. A timing check on a proper machine takes minutes, often costs nothing at a local shop, and tells you far more about the state of the oil than a date on paper would.
