Definition
A decorative striped finish, also called Geneva stripes, applied to movement bridges, plates and rotors as a series of parallel or circular bands.

Cotes de Geneve is a decorative finish consisting of a series of parallel bands brushed across the surface of a movement component. Each band catches the light differently, so the surface appears to ripple as the watch is tilted. It is applied to bridges, mainplates, oscillating weights and sometimes to the inner surfaces of a case back. In English it is usually called Geneva stripes or Geneva waves.
How it is applied
The stripes are cut with a rotating abrasive tool, often a boxwood, resin or abrasive-loaded head, drawn across the surface in overlapping passes. The part sits on a jig that indexes it a fixed distance between passes, so the spacing, the overlap and the direction are set by the workshop, which is why the effect varies so much between manufacturers. Straight stripes are the most common, but circular versions radiating from a center are used on rotors, and there are wide, narrow and interrupted variants.
Two things about the process explain most of what you see. The pattern is a surface graining only a few microns deep, not a cut, and it is normally applied before the part is plated with nickel or rhodium, so the plating follows the texture rather than filling it. And on a mainstream movement the whole operation takes seconds per bridge. Hand-guided versions exist and are rare, and they are not the ones behind the case back of an ordinary watch.
Applying it well is a matter of consistency: the bands must be evenly spaced and identical in width, and the pattern must run continuously across separate parts so that the lines meet where two bridges abut.
The variants
Straight banding across a bridge is the default. Circular banding, concentric rings worked from a center, is used on rotors and on some barrel bridges. The German trade has its own version, Glashutte ribbing, traditionally wider and laid at a set diagonal across a three-quarter plate; it is a regional convention rather than a different technique, and you will see it on movements from the Saxon makers, including Nomos.
None of these should be confused with the other patterns that share a movement. Perlage is a field of overlapping circular spots made with a rotating peg. Snailing, or circular graining, is concentric rings cut into wheels such as the ratchet and crown wheels. Guilloche is a pattern actually cut into metal on a rose engine, with real depth, and belongs to dials and cases rather than bridges.
What good looks like
Through an exhibition case back, look at the edges rather than the middle. The bands should be the same width and pitch across the whole plate, they should run out cleanly at the border rather than fading or doubling, and where two bridges sit side by side the lines should continue across the gap without a step. The pattern should stop crisply where it meets a bevel or a countersink, with no smearing into jewel holes or screw seats.
Poor work shows as chatter, meaning a band that wavers or repeats, as visible overlap marks where a pass was made twice, and as stripes that die out before reaching an edge. Because the finish is only microns deep, there is no repair: a scratch cannot be polished out of a striped bridge without removing the stripes, and restriping a single part to match its neighbors is difficult enough that a marked bridge behind a display back is effectively permanent. It is also why movements are handled with finger cots, since a fingerprint slowly etches plated brass.
Common misconceptions
The name is geographic in origin only. There is no rule that ties Cotes de Geneve to Geneva, and no relationship to the separate Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal), which dates from an 1886 Genevan law, is administered by Timelab in Geneva, has published criteria and, since a 2011 revision, certifies the complete watch rather than the movement alone. Striped bridges are found on movements made anywhere at any price.
It is also purely cosmetic. The pattern is applied to visible upper surfaces, not to working surfaces, and it does not affect timekeeping, durability or lubrication. Because it can be applied quickly by machine, it is one of the cheapest ways to make a plain movement look considered, which is why it appears so often behind exhibition case backs on modestly priced watches, and why marketing copy that presents it as craft is the kind of claim worth decoding. Judge finishing by the harder work instead: the crispness of bevelled edges, above all at interior angles, the treatment of screw heads and slots, and whether hidden surfaces have been finished at all.
