Perlage is a decorative movement finish made up of overlapping circular spots, each produced by pressing a rotating abrasive peg against the metal and then stepping it along in a regular grid. The result is a matte surface covered in a scale-like pattern of small overlapping discs, catching the light differently at every angle. It is applied to mainplates, to the undersides of bridges, to the inside of a barrel and to the parts of a movement most owners never see. The English name is circular graining; American benches often call it spotting, and the German trade calls it Perlschliff.

How it is applied

The tool is a peg of boxwood, hardwood, plastic or bonded abrasive, turning in a bench spindle or a machine head and charged with abrasive. It is lowered onto the surface, held for a moment, lifted, and the work is indexed a fixed distance before the next spot. Do that across a plate in rows and you get the pattern.

The proportions are what make it read as regular. Spots are usually around a millimeter across, smaller on crowded plates and larger on wide open ones, and each spot overlaps its neighbors by something like a third to a half of its diameter, in both directions. The graining itself is only a few microns deep, and like Cotes de Geneve it is normally applied before nickel or rhodium plating, so the plating follows the texture. On an industrial plate the whole operation is a matter of seconds on a jig.

Why it is there

The practical justification is that perlage covers the marks left by machining, giving a uniform surface on a plate that came off a milling cutter looking rather less appealing. It is also often said that the broken surface helps to hold stray particles away from the running parts, though this is a traditional claim rather than a measured effect and should not be leaned on too hard.

The honest answer is that perlage is chiefly aesthetic. It signals that a plate has been decorated after machining rather than left as made, and it is applied even to surfaces that will be hidden under a dial because the trade decided long ago that a movement is finished all over or not at all.

Where you meet it

Mostly where you cannot see it. The classic location is the mainplate under the dial, then the undersides of bridges, the inner face of the automatic bridge and the inside of the barrel. Some cases carry it on the inner surface of the back and on the movement ring.

That means an exhibition case back usually shows you striping rather than perlage, and you meet perlage properly in three situations: when a watchmaker has the movement apart on the bench, in the photographs a good seller takes during a service, and on movements whose plates face outward by design. Knowing what a normally grained plate looks like is also how you spot a plate that has been polished, refinished or swapped, which matters when judging how a movement was put together rather than how it was advertised.

What good looks like

Look for spots of even diameter with consistent overlap, rows that follow the edges of the plate rather than running off it, and a pattern that continues cleanly right up to jewel holes and screw seats without smearing or stray scratches. Where perlage meets a chamfer or a countersink, the transition should be crisp.

Bad work is easy to name once you know the failure modes: spots of visibly different sizes, a row that drifts out of line, doubled marks where the peg dwelled or bounced, a smeared halo around a jewel hole, and rows that run over an edge and stop halfway. Because the finish is shallow, damage is not polished out. A slipped screwdriver leaves a scratch that can only be disguised by regraining the whole surface, which is a real operation on a bench spindle but one that rarely matches the original spacing exactly.

Hand-applied perlage, done on a peg wood or abrasive tip in a bench spindle, tends to show tiny variations in spot placement. Machine perlage on a modern plate is perfectly regular. Neither is a reliable indicator of price, and the difference is hard to call from a photograph.

Common misconceptions

Perlage is not a mark of luxury on its own. Industrial movements produced in very large numbers carry it, because it is quick to apply and cheap. What separates the grades is where it is applied, how carefully it is bounded, and what other finishing surrounds it, above all bevelled edges and polished screw heads, which cost labor that perlage does not.

It is also not the same thing as the circular graining applied to wheels. Snailing, the concentric rings on a ratchet or crown wheel, is a single set of rings turned about the wheel's own center, not a field of overlapping spots.
