The bezel is loose, or it will not turn
Short answer
A bezel that turns freely with no clicks has usually lost its click spring: the case and the ring are both fine. A bezel that will not turn is normally jammed with sand, dried salt or soap, and rinsing under fresh water while working it fixes that more often than not. On a dive watch the first fault is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.

Under a rotating bezel there are only a handful of parts: the ring itself, an insert carrying the markings, a click spring or a set of ball bearings that gives the indexing, and a tension wire that holds the whole assembly onto the case. None of them are expensive. All of them are small, and two of them are exposed to whatever your wrist has been through.
That short parts list is good news. It means the two symptoms owners report, "it spins freely" and "it will not move", almost always have simple, different causes, and one of them you can fix yourself in two minutes at a tap.
What the bezel is actually doing
On a dive watch the bezel is a timer. You align the marked zero point with the minute hand when you go in, and the minute hand then reads elapsed time directly off the bezel scale. There is no mechanism connecting it to the movement. The whole function lives in your ability to set it and in its refusal to move afterwards.
The indexing comes from a click spring: a flat or wire spring that rides in a ring of teeth on the underside of the bezel, dropping into each tooth as you turn. Most modern dive bezels have 120 teeth, giving a click every half minute. Some use 60, one per minute. A smaller number of designs, particularly on higher-end watches, replace the spring with a captive ring of ball bearings for a smoother action.
The bezel is retained by a tension wire, sometimes called a bezel spring, sitting in a groove around the case. It snaps on. That is why a bezel can be removed and refitted without ever opening the screw-down crown or the caseback, and why a knocked bezel sometimes simply pops off intact rather than breaking anything.
Why unidirectional matters, and why both ways is a fault
A dive bezel turns counter-clockwise only. That is deliberate and it is a safety design. If the bezel is knocked while you are underwater, a counter-clockwise rotation moves the zero mark backwards relative to the hand, so the watch reports more elapsed time than has actually passed. You surface early. The error is always in the safe direction.
A bidirectional bezel can be knocked the other way and under-report your time. On a watch used purely as a countdown timer for a parking meter, that is an annoyance. On a watch a person is using to manage a decompression schedule or a gas supply, it is not.
It turns freely, with no clicks
The click spring has broken, fatigued, or worked its way out of position. In descending order of likelihood:
- The spring has lost tension. Years of cycling flatten a thin spring. The bezel still turns and still stops roughly where you put it, but the clicks are mushy and it drifts on the wrist.
- The spring has broken or fallen out. Usually after a knock, or after somebody removed the bezel and refitted it without seating the spring. Symptom: completely free rotation, no detents at all.
- The tension wire has weakened. The bezel now lifts slightly as well as spinning, and you can see or feel a gap between the ring and the case.
- Ball bearings have escaped. On ball-bearing designs, a hard impact can displace bearings, giving an action that is free in some sectors and notchy in others.
What all four have in common: the case is not damaged. The insert is not damaged. A watchmaker orders a spring against the case reference and fits it in a single visit. Owners who assume a loose bezel means a broken case, and quietly write the watch off, are usually wrong.
It will not turn at all
This is nearly always contamination, and nearly always fixable at a tap.
Sand is the usual culprit. Beach sand is mostly quartz, which sits at about 7 on the Mohs scale, harder than the stainless steel of the case. It does not simply block the bezel, it laps the sliding surfaces while you force it. Salt is worse in a different way: it dissolves in seawater, wicks into the gap under the ring, and then crystallizes as the watch dries, wedging the bezel solid. Dried soap, sunscreen and hand cream all do the same thing more slowly.
The fix, in order:
- Hold the watch under cool, clean running fresh water with the crown screwed down. Not hot water, which stresses gaskets.
- Work the bezel gently back and forth under the running water. Do not force it past the point of resistance. You are flushing, not levering.
- Repeat for a minute or two. Salt takes time to redissolve.
- Dry it thoroughly and try again. If it now clicks, you are done.
- If it is still solid, an ultrasonic clean of the exterior, or a bezel removal and clean at a bench, is the next step.

What not to do
- Do not spray penetrating oil, WD-40 or lubricant under the bezel. It will reach the crystal gasket and the case gasket, and petroleum distillates degrade the rubber compounds those gaskets are made from. You trade a stiff bezel for a leaking case.
- Do not lever the bezel off at a single point. A ceramic insert cracks under point loading and cannot be repaired, only replaced. Aluminum inserts dent. The case flank marks.
- Do not force a stiff bezel with pliers or a strap wrench. Whatever is underneath is abrasive, and you are grinding it in.
- Do not use compressed air aimed at the gap. It drives grit and moisture inward rather than out.
What it costs at the bench
Bezel work is one of the cheaper things that can go wrong with a watch, because the caseback usually stays closed and the movement is never touched.

Figures are indicative US figures for 2026, quoted before sales tax, and they move with local labor rates and parts availability; outside the US, expect local tax and any import duty on parts on top. On a watch from a brand that restricts parts supply, the independent route may not exist at all and the cost is whatever the service center quotes. Ask for a water resistance test afterwards if the bezel was removed. Lifting the bezel does not open the case, but it does disturb the area around the crystal gasket, and a test is cheap when the watch is already on the bench.
Stopping it happening again
Rinse the watch in fresh water after the sea, after a chlorinated pool and after a sandy day, and turn the bezel while you do it. That single habit prevents most bezel failures that are not simply the spring reaching the end of its life.
Have the click spring replaced at every full service rather than waiting for it to fail. It is a consumable and it costs very little when the watch is already apart, exactly like the gaskets discussed in servicing and care.
If you are choosing a watch and the bezel matters to you, handle it before buying. Count the clicks, check there is no back-play between detents, and confirm it moves in one direction only. Common follow-up questions
My dive watch bezel now turns both ways. Is that a problem?
Yes, if you actually dive with it. A unidirectional bezel is a safety device: knocked accidentally, it can only rotate in the direction that makes your elapsed time read longer than it really is, so you surface early rather than late. A bezel that has started turning clockwise as well has lost the pawl or spring that blocks that direction, and it can now under-report your time underwater. Have it repaired before the next dive.
Can I take the bezel off myself to clean under it?
You can, but the failure mode is expensive. The bezel snaps over a tension wire and comes off with a thin case knife worked evenly around the edge. Lever from one point and you bend the ring, mark the case flank, or crack a ceramic insert. A rinse under running fresh water while turning the bezel gets most of the grit out with none of that risk, so try that several times before reaching for a tool.
The bezel clicks but the pip no longer lines up with twelve.
The bezel has been refitted one tooth out, or the insert has shifted in the ring. Neither affects timing accuracy in any way, because you set the bezel against the minute hand, not against the dial. It is a cosmetic fault. Correcting it means removing and re-seating the bezel, which is cheap if the watch is already open for something else and rarely worth a dedicated visit on its own.
Is a stiff bezel better than a loose one?
A bezel should turn with firm, even resistance and a definite click at every step. Too loose and it moves in a jacket sleeve. Too stiff usually means contamination rather than good engineering, and forcing a stiff bezel grinds trapped grit into the case flank. If it went from smooth to stiff, something is under it. If it has always been stiff, that is how the watch was built.
