Can I swim with a 50m water resistant watch?

Short answer

Occasionally, and carefully, if the watch is in good order. A 50 m rating comes from a static 5 bar test on a new watch, and swimming adds dynamic pressure the test never applies. Gentle lap swimming is usually survivable; diving in, water slides and daily pool use are not. If you swim often, 100 m is the honest minimum.

You can, occasionally and carefully, if the watch is young or recently tested. You should not make a habit of it. A 50 meter marking means the case held 5 bar of static pressure in a chamber, at room temperature, on the day it was made. Swimming is not static, the watch is no longer new, and the gap between those two facts is where 50 m watches get flooded.

The practical line most watchmakers draw is this: 50 m covers accidental immersion with confidence, and deliberate swimming with a caveat. If swimming is something you do weekly rather than once a summer, buy the watch a rating of 100 m or more instead of buying it a repair.

What the 50 m marking actually certifies

Under ISO 22810, a manufacturer that wants to mark a watch 5 bar puts it through a set of tests: immersion in shallow water, overpressure in air and water at the claimed rating, a condensation check, a temperature change cycle, and a sideways force applied to the crown and pushers while the watch is submerged. Pass all of them and the dial may carry the figure.

Two features of that regime matter to you. First, the manufacturer chooses the rating and then demonstrates it; no outside body assigns the number. Second, ISO 22810 permits sample testing, so the specific watch on your wrist may never have been in a pressure chamber at all. Why swimming asks more than 5 bar

Static pressure at swimming depth is trivial. A meter of water is about a tenth of a bar. The load that actually reaches your case comes from movement.

Sweep an arm through water at speed and the water piling up in front of your wrist is momentarily at a much higher pressure than the depth alone implies. Dive off a board or jump in feet first and the impact spike is higher still, concentrated on whatever face of the case hits the surface. Water slides, wave impacts and a hard freestyle catch all do a version of the same thing. None of it is measured by the test that produced the number on your dial.

Add the second variable, age. Gaskets harden, take a compression set, and lose the springiness that made them seal, whether the watch is worn or not. A five year old 50 m watch that has been in showers and sunscreen is not the watch that passed the test.

What 50 m allows, activity by activity

The checks that decide it

If you are going to swim in a 50 m watch, four things determine whether it goes well.

  • The crown. Pressed fully in, every time. If the watch has a screw-down crown, screw it fully home. A crown sitting in the setting position turns a 50 m watch into an open case.
  • The age of the gaskets. Rubber seals are consumables. If the case has never been opened and the watch is more than five years old, assume the seals are past their best.
  • Whether the case has been opened. A battery change, a caseback engraving or a bracelet swap can all disturb the seals. Any case opening means the rating is unverified until it is retested.
  • A recent pressure test. A dry test on a bench takes a few minutes and typically runs roughly $25 to $60, though what a shop charges varies by market. It is the only way to know the current state, rather than the state the dial claims.

What to do if you want to swim without worrying

Get the watch pressure tested, and repeat that about once a year for as long as it keeps swimming. Have fresh gaskets fitted whenever the caseback comes off. Rinse in cool fresh water after every pool or ocean session, because chlorine and salt both work on rubber and steel. Dry the watch properly, especially under a bracelet.

And be honest about the use case. A 50 m watch is a good dress or everyday watch that will shrug off weather and accidents. Common follow-up questions

Is 50 m enough for snorkeling?

No. Snorkeling means repeated surface dives, hard entries and salt water, and it often means several hours of exposure. That is a 100 m job at minimum, and 200 m if you do it regularly. The duck dive itself is the problem: the pressure spike as you push down is larger than the depth suggests.

Does a 50 m watch usually have a screw-down crown?

Usually not. Screw-down crowns start appearing around the 100 m mark and are close to universal at 200 m. A 50 m watch normally relies on a push crown sealed by a single O-ring around the tube, which is the weakest link in the case and the reason the rating stops where it does.

Can I wear a 50 m watch in the rain or while washing dishes?

Yes. Rain, handwashing, a spilled drink and a run in a downpour are all comfortably inside a 50 m rating, and inside a 30 m rating too. Hot dishwater is the one to think about, because sustained heat and detergent do more to a gasket than pressure does.

My 50 m watch already survived a swim. Is it fine?

It is fine until it is not. Seals fail probabilistically as they age, so a successful swim tells you the watch held that day, not that it has margin left. If you plan to keep swimming in it, book a pressure test and let the bench answer the question properly.
