The verdict
Worth buying if you want a legible, well-built instrument watch with a five to seven day power reserve and a documented military lineage. The engineering is real and the pilot's watches are among the most usable designs at the price. Two honest caveats: the in-house claim is thinner on some calibers than the marketing implies, and resale is unremarkable.

IWC is the odd one out among Swiss manufactures: founded by an American, sited in German-speaking Schaffhausen rather than the French-speaking watch valleys, and built from the start around machine production. That origin still shows in the watches, which are engineering-led and unfussy.
Who owns IWC, and where the watches are made
Florentine Ariosto Jones, previously at E. Howard Watch and Clock in Boston, founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen in 1868. IWC's own account of the choice is practical: modern factory premises, a hydropower plant on the Rhine to drive the machines, and existing local horological skill. The riverside factory was finished in 1875 and IWC still uses it.
Ownership is Richemont. IWC came as part of Les Manufactures Horlogères, bought from Mannesmann in a deal announced in July 2000 and completed on 8 December 2000. LMH held all of IWC, 60 percent of Jaeger-LeCoultre and 90 percent of A. Lange & Söhne, so all three entered the group together.
Production is split across two Schaffhausen sites. The Manufakturzentrum, opened in August 2018, is a 13,500 square meter plant making around 1,500 movement components for the 52, 82, 59 and 69 caliber families, assembling movements, and manufacturing cases in steel, titanium, platinum, gold and bronze. The 1875 building on the Rhine does final assembly: dials and hands, casing up, quality and pressure testing.
The pilot's watch lineage
This is IWC's strongest claim, and it is documented rather than invented. The Special Pilot's Watch of 1936 already had a rotating bezel for marking takeoff times and an antimagnetic escapement. In 1940 came the Big Pilot's Watch, caliber 52 T.S.C., built to the German air force observation watch specification: 55 mm across and 16.5 mm thick, with an oversized conical crown you could work wearing gloves, a soft-iron inner cage, and roughly a thousand made.
The Mark 11 of 1948 is the important one: Watch, Wrist, Navigational, Mark 11, supplied to the British Air Ministry under stores reference 6B/346 and issued to the RAF and Fleet Air Arm from late 1949. Inside was the hand-wound caliber 89 at 18,000 vibrations per hour with hacking seconds, regulated in five positions and tested from minus 5 to plus 46 degrees Celsius over 44 days. Jaeger-LeCoultre built to the same specification until 1953; the Mark 11 served until 1981.
The civilian Mark series descends from it, and the numbering is untidy: Mark XII in 1993, then XV, XVI, XVII and XVIII, then straight to the Mark XX in 2022. There is no XIII, XIV or XIX.
The soft-iron inner case, and what it does
The Mark 11 carried a soft-iron dial roughly a millimeter thick, a soft-iron movement holder ring and a soft-iron inner back. Together they enclose the movement in a shell of highly permeable metal, and because soft iron conducts magnetic flux far better than the movement's steel, an external field runs around the movement instead of through it. The magnetism guide covers why that matters: a magnetized hairspring whose coils cling together makes a watch run fast, sometimes by minutes a day.
Read IWC's published figures against the standard. ISO 764 tests a watch in a field of 4,800 A/m, roughly 60 gauss, and requires it to keep running afterwards with rate deviation no worse than 30 seconds a day. IWC rated the 2002 Big Pilot at 32,000 A/m, roughly 400 gauss, and the 1989 Ingenieur reference 3508 at 500,000 A/m, roughly 6,300 gauss, among the highest figures ever published for a wristwatch. Most current IWC pilot's watches carry a cage with no stated number attached.
The Portugieser, and what the archive says
The told story is that in the late 1930s Portuguese merchants asked IWC for a wristwatch with marine chronometer accuracy, and since only a pocket watch movement could deliver it, IWC fitted the 17-ligne hand-wound caliber 74 into a large plain case. IWC's own timeline supports the outline: a 1939 order from Portuguese importers for large wristwatches with pocket watch precision.
The delivery archives complicate the details. The first of these watches shipped on 22 February 1939 to a wholesaler in Odessa, and more went to Lviv that June. The earliest documented Portuguese delivery is 1942. The watch had no name at the time; Portugieser was applied only in 1993. The interesting fact survives all of it: a wristwatch that large in 1939 was extraordinary, and the reason was the movement inside.
The move away from bought-in bases
For decades the Mark series ran on supplied bases: the Mark XV and XVI used calibers built on the ETA 2892-A2, later production moved to Sellita SW300 type architecture, and the chronographs long used the Valjoux 7750. None of that was hidden and none of it was a weakness; those are excellent movements any watchmaker can service. The families that replaced them are the real argument for the brand today, and the headline is the power reserve.
The 52000 family draws on two barrels for a full 168 hours, seven days, at 28,800 vibrations per hour, wound by IWC's Pellaton pawl system in which the pawls and automatic wheel are zirconium oxide ceramic to resist wear, with a free-sprung balance and Breguet overcoil hairspring. The 69000 family, from 2016, is an integrated column-wheel chronograph with 33 jewels and a 46-hour reserve. The 82000 family, including the 82100 in the Big Pilot 43, uses Pellaton winding for 60 hours.

The Mark XX is the entry point and the most watch for the money here: 100 meters, a five-day reserve, a screw-in crown, a soft-iron cage and a tool-free strap change. The Portugieser is the dress line and, at 30 meters of water resistance on the chronograph, the one to keep dry.
The weaknesses worth naming
- The in-house story is uneven. Some families are made in Schaffhausen and some are not, and the product page does not say which. Ask about the specific caliber rather than trusting the word manufacture.
- Cases run large. Big Pilot heritage means big watches, and a 43 mm case still overhangs a slim wrist. Check the lug-to-lug measurement, not the diameter, with the size calculator.
- Portugieser water resistance is modest. Thirty meters on a chronograph at this price is a real limitation, whatever the marine chronometer heritage suggests.
- The accuracy claim cannot be checked. Most of the range is not chronometer certified and IWC publishes no rate tolerances of its own, so there is nothing external to verify.
Warranty, servicing and the cost of ownership
The warranty is two years as standard. Registering with My IWC, announced in November 2019, extends it by up to six further years to a maximum of eight. Two conditions matter: it requires opting in to marketing communications, and it extends duration only, leaving the original exclusions in place. Registration can be done retroactively while the watch is still inside its original two years. The manufacturer warranty is the contract that travels with the watch wherever you are; statutory consumer rights sit on top of it and differ by country, so a reader outside the US should check what their own law adds.
IWC publishes no recommended service interval, so use the general rule instead: service on symptoms, and otherwise before roughly a decade has passed.
IWC does not publish a service tariff either. A 2023 tariff reproduced by third parties gives useful shape once converted: roughly $500 to $650 for a three-hand mechanical watch, $750 to $1,050 for chronographs depending on complexity, $1,600 to $1,900 for a perpetual calendar chronograph and about $3,000 upward for a grande complication, with a metal bracelet adding around $100. That is mid-market, and it contradicts the assumption that IWC servicing is punishing. Two caveats: those are converted 2023 figures rather than a current published tariff, and a baseline overhaul excludes parts, crystal, case refinishing and corrosion work, which is where estimates grow. Work carries a 24-month guarantee, and the cost of ownership calculator will model it over a holding period.
Resale, and who it is for
IWC trades below retail on the secondary market, like almost every Swiss brand outside the two or three names with waiting lists. We are not publishing a percentage: the marketplace indices behind those numbers are built from selected model baskets, use retail prices many buyers never pay, and come from businesses with a commercial interest in the answer. The direction is clear, the precision is not. The pattern in how watches depreciate applies, and the practical implication is that the pre-owned market is where IWC is most attractive to a buyer, precisely because it is unrewarding to a seller.
IWC suits somebody who wants a legible instrument watch, a long power reserve, and a military lineage that survives being checked. The Mark XX does more for its price than most watches in its band. Buy at a real transaction price, keep the box and papers, and plan to keep it.
Look elsewhere in three cases. If movement finishing is what you are paying for, Jaeger-LeCoultre gives more of it at comparable money. If you want the instrument-watch virtues without the price, Sinn does magnetic and thermal engineering more aggressively for less. And if you want an integrated chronograph rather than a modular one, Zenith is worth comparing, with the same depreciation caveat.
Common follow-up questions
Does the soft-iron inner case really protect against magnetism?
Yes, and by a well-understood mechanism. Soft iron has far higher magnetic permeability than the steel inside the movement, so an external field is conducted around the movement rather than through it. The cost is that the caseback must be solid metal, since a sapphire window leaves a hole in the shield. That is why the Mark XX has a closed back and the Big Pilot 43, with its display back, has no inner cage.
Are IWC's movements genuinely in-house?
Some are, and the picture is more mixed than the marketing suggests. IWC's own manufacturing center states that it makes components for the 52, 82, 59 and 69 caliber families, which is a clear in-house claim. The 32000 family used in the Mark XX is not on that list, and has been reported as coming from ValFleurier, Richemont's group movement maker. Older Mark references openly used ETA 2892-A2 and Sellita SW300 type bases.
How much does an IWC service cost?
IWC does not publish a price list for service. The best available shape comes from a 2023 tariff reproduced by third parties, which converts to roughly $500 to $650 for a three-hand mechanical watch, $750 to $1,050 for chronographs depending on type, and well over $1,500 for perpetual calendars and grande complications, with metal bracelets adding around $100. That is a mid-market figure rather than an alarming one. Parts, crystal and case refinishing are quoted on top.
Is the Portugieser origin story true?
Partly. IWC's own timeline records a 1939 order from Portuguese importers for large wristwatches with pocket watch precision. IWC's delivery archives, though, show the earliest examples shipped to Odessa in February 1939 and to Lviv that June, with the first documented Portuguese delivery only in 1942. The watch was unnamed at the time; the Portugieser name was applied in 1993. The core of the story stands, the details are later narrative.
