IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XX
The verdict
The Mark XX is the best-engineered Mark in decades: 40 mm, 100 m, a soft-iron antimagnetic cage and a 120 hour movement. It is also the least distinctive, it is not chronometer certified, and you will never see the caliber you paid for. Buy it for the case and the lineage, not for the specification per dollar.

The Mark XX is a 40 mm steel pilot's watch with a matte or sunray dial, printed Arabic numerals, a triangle at twelve, a date at three and a solid caseback engraved with a Ju-52. IWC launched it in 2022 with almost no announcement, skipping the Mark XIX entirely, and has since added dial colors, a five-link steel bracelet and titanium special editions. It is the twentieth entry in a line that started as British military equipment and has spent seventy years turning into a civilian watch.

The soft-iron cage, and what it actually buys
Inside the steel case is a second case of soft iron: an inner container, a dial plate and an inner back made of a highly permeable alloy. Magnetic field lines take the easiest path, so they run through the iron rather than through the balance and hairspring inside it. It is old technology, it works, and it is the reason the Mark XI was issued to Royal Air Force navigators in the first place. What it buys is practical immunity to ordinary life. ISO 764, the standard behind the word antimagnetic, only requires a watch to survive about 60 gauss, which is less than many fridge magnets. A soft-iron shell puts you far above that. What it does not buy is a number: IWC publishes no gauss rating for the Mark XX, so anyone quoting one is guessing. What changed from the Mark XVIII
The Mark XVIII ran from 2016 to the Mark XX's arrival and remained on sale alongside it for a time. It was 40 mm and 11 mm tall, rated to 6 bar, with a soft-iron inner case and an outsourced automatic descended from ETA and later Sellita architecture, giving 42 hours.

The gains are real. Two millimeters less lug-to-lug is the difference between a watch that overhangs a 16 cm (6.3 inch) wrist and one that does not, and 120 hours means the watch is still running after a weekend in a drawer. The losses are smaller but genuine: a white date disc on a black dial that many owners consider a step backwards, and a movement that a local watchmaker cannot obtain parts for as easily as they could for a Sellita base. The Mark lineage, in order
The Mark name comes from British military practice, where every item of equipment carried a Mark number. IWC's aviation watches picked it up and kept it.

Read as a sequence, the story is a military instrument slowly becoming a dress-adjacent daily watch. Sizes rose to 41 mm and came back to 40. The one feature that survived every generation intact is the soft-iron cage, which is the only thing on the specification sheet that still descends directly from the 1949 requirement. How it wears
Forty millimeters with no bezel means the dial is almost all of the watch, so the Mark XX reads larger than 40 mm from above. The number that matters is the 49.2 mm lug-to-lug, which is long for the diameter and is what limits the watch on smaller wrists. Below about 16 cm, or 6.3 inches, the lug tips reach the edge. At 10.8 mm it is genuinely slim, and it goes under a cuff more easily than most watches with the same dial presence. The watch size calculator will tell you where you sit.
The EasX-Change system swaps leather for steel without a tool, which is the single most useful thing IWC added, and worth using: the same watch reads as a field watch on leather and as a sports watch on the bracelet.
What is wrong with it
The date window is placed slightly inside the circle described by the numerals, and once you see it you cannot unsee it. The white disc makes it louder than it was on the Mark XVIII. On a design whose entire argument is legible restraint, that is not a small thing.
It is not chronometer certified. At this price a COSC certificate is not a given, but a Longines Spirit at roughly half the money has one, and the Mark XX offers no published rate tolerance in return. Our explanation of what COSC certification means covers what you are not getting.
And there is no no-date option, no smaller case, and no way to see the movement. IWC charges manufacture prices for a caliber you take on trust.
What it costs to own
Figures are indicative, quoted in US dollars before sales tax, and they move. The Mark XX launched in 2022 at around $4,950 on leather; IWC has lifted the list price since, and the US figure now sits at roughly $5,250 on leather and about $6,250 on the five-link steel bracelet. Treat somewhere in the region of $5,250 to $6,500 as the current band, check IWC's own price for your market, and expect a different number outside the United States, where the local list moves with tax, import duty and how the brand distributes there.
Secondhand, Mark XX examples with box and papers commonly trade well below list, often in the region of half to two thirds of it, and the leather-strap references fall furthest because the bracelet is expensive to add later. Servicing is the number people underestimate. A brand service on an in-house caliber from a major maker runs roughly $700 to $1,100 and often more once parts are added, against roughly $250 to $500 for an independent who can get parts, as our breakdown of service costs explains. With a group-supplied caliber, the independent route is not guaranteed to be open to you. Budget one full service and a pressure test or two across ten years and run it through the cost of ownership calculator. The alternatives, and when each is the better answer
The Longines Spirit is the honest value comparison: the same idea, chronometer certified, at roughly half the price, with a thicker case and a less refined finish. If the specification sheet is what you are buying, buy that instead.
A used Mark XVIII is the better answer if you want the same look, a serviceable common caliber and a black date disc, and you can live with 42 hours and 6 bar.
If your reason for wanting a Mark is the antimagnetic engineering rather than the aviation styling, a certified antimagnetic watch with a published gauss figure gives you a number instead of a promise. And if you are choosing between this and a chronograph at similar money, the TAG Heuer Carrera is the usual cross-shop: more watch, more complication, and steeper depreciation.
Common follow-up questions
How much magnetism does the soft-iron cage actually stop?
IWC publishes no gauss figure for the Mark XX, so the honest answer is that the cage raises the threshold well above the ISO 764 minimum of roughly 60 gauss without a stated ceiling. A soft-iron shell works by shunting field lines around the movement rather than through it, and it is very effective against the fields you meet in daily life: bag clasps, speakers, laptop lids, induction hobs. It is not a rating you can quote.
Is the caliber 32111 an in-house movement?
IWC calls it a manufacture caliber. It is made by ValFleurier, the movement operation inside the same group that owns IWC, which is a different claim from a caliber designed and built at Schaffhausen. Whether that counts as in-house depends on where you draw the line, and the line is genuinely blurry across the whole industry. What is not in doubt is that it is a step up from the Sellita base in the Mark XVIII.
Why is there no display caseback?
Because the soft-iron inner case has to be closed. A magnetic shield with a sapphire window in it is not a shield. Every Mark that carries the cage carries a solid back, and IWC engraves it with a Ju-52 aircraft. If you want to see an IWC movement, you have to buy a model that gives up the antimagnetic construction.
Is the Mark XVIII still worth buying used?
For some buyers, yes. It has the black date disc many people prefer, it uses a Sellita-based caliber that any independent watchmaker can service, and it trades well below the Mark XX. You give up 60 hours of power reserve against 120, 60 meters of water resistance against 100, and about 2 mm of lug-to-lug, which is the difference you will actually feel.
