The verdict

A 25 jewel automatic chronograph, 30.00 mm across and 7.90 mm high, running at 28,800 vph with a 30 minute and 12 hour counter, day and date. It switches with a cam rather than a column wheel, which makes it cheap to build and easy to service. It is thick, its rotor wobbles, and it works.

The caliber is officially the ETA 7750. Everybody calls it the Valjoux 7750, because Valjoux designed it before the company was absorbed into ETA, and the old name stuck so hard that ETA's own product page still reads "7750 Valjoux". It is the automatic chronograph that most Swiss chronographs are built on, and by a wide margin the one a watchmaker is most likely to have taken apart before.

It is 13 and a quarter lignes, 30.00 mm across, and 7.90 mm high. Those two numbers explain most of what a 7750 watch feels like on the wrist before you get anywhere near the mechanism.

Where it came from

The design is credited to Valjoux engineer Edmond Capt and dates from the early 1970s. It was one of the first watch movements laid out with computer assistance, which shows in how systematically it is organized: a main plate, a chronograph plate and a calendar plate, each doing one job. Its first production run was cut short by the quartz crisis, and it came back in the 1980s, by which time Valjoux had become part of ETA. Almost every Swiss mechanical chronograph sold since then is either a 7750, a 7750 derivative, or a movement designed in reaction to it.

As with the 2824-2 and the 2892-A2, ETA's own product page for the 7750 now carries the suffix "unavailable", meaning it is no longer offered to brands outside the Swatch Group.

Cam versus column wheel

Every chronograph needs a switch. Press the pusher and something has to start the chronograph train, engage the coupling and release the brake, in that order, reliably, thousands of times. There are two established ways of doing it.

A column wheel is a small toothed wheel with vertical pillars. Levers ride on it, dropping between the pillars or riding up onto them as the wheel indexes round one step per press. It distributes the switching load smoothly, which is why column wheel chronographs have a lighter, crisper pusher feel.

The 7750 uses the other method. ETA's own product page describes it as a "chronograph mechanism with cams, 2 push buttons", and the spare parts list confirms it: part 29 is the chronograph cam, part 28 is the cam jumper. Press the pusher and a lever rotates a shaped cam; the profile of that cam moves the other levers into position. It is a simpler, sturdier arrangement with fewer delicate parts, and, crucially, its adjustments are made with eccentric screws that a watchmaker can turn without dismantling anything.

The coupling is worth naming too, because people assume it is a horizontal clutch. It is not. Part 39 is an oscillating pinion, a pinion mounted so that it tilts into and out of mesh with the chronograph wheel. It is an old idea, and it engages more directly than the sliding gear of a classic horizontal clutch.

The rotor, and the wobble

Pick up a 7750 watch, shake your wrist, and you feel the rotor move in a way that most three-hand automatics do not. There is a reason. The automatic work has a single reversing wheel, which means the movement winds in one direction of rotor rotation only. In the other direction the rotor turns with almost nothing resisting it, so its mass swings freely and you feel it as a shudder or a wobble, sometimes with an audible sound.

Compare that with the 2824-2, whose parts list carries a reversing wheel and an auxiliary reversing wheel, giving it bidirectional winding and a quieter, more damped feel. Neither is a defect. The 7750's arrangement is simple and reliable, and on a movement this size there is plenty of rotor mass to wind the barrel even at half duty. But it is the single most commented-on physical characteristic of the caliber, and it is not something a service will remove.

The thickness it imposes

7.90 mm of movement is the floor of a 7750 watch, not its height. On top of that sits a dial, hands with clearance, a crystal, a caseback, gaskets and whatever the case designer needs for a bezel. In practice a 7750 chronograph is normally somewhere around 14 to 16 mm thick. The 30.00 mm movement diameter also sets a floor on case size, so 7750 watches are rarely under about 40 mm across and are usually 42 mm or more.

That is the honest constraint to weigh before buying one. A 7750 chronograph will sit high on the wrist and catch on cuffs. If a thin chronograph is the goal, a modular chronograph on a 2892-A2 base is thinner, at the cost of less margin in the movement. Accuracy and grades

ETA sells its mechanical calibers in four executions, Standard, Elabore, Top and Chronometre, differing in hairspring alloy, balance material, pallet stones, mainspring and shock protection. ETA does not publish a daily rate tolerance per grade in any document available to the public. The figures usually quoted, plus or minus 12 seconds a day in two positions for Standard, plus or minus 7 in three for Elabore and plus or minus 4 in five for Top, come from Sellita's published table for the same grade names, not from ETA. A Chronometre grade chronograph is submitted to COSC against ISO 3159, which requires a mean daily rate between minus 4 and plus 6 seconds; see accuracy and chronometer standards.

One thing is specific to chronographs: the rate you measure with the chronograph stopped is not the rate you get with it running. Engaging the chronograph loads the same barrel, amplitude falls and the rate shifts. If you time your watch, do it with the chronograph off, and read timing your own watch before drawing conclusions from a single reading. Servicing, parts and cost

This is where the 7750 wins outright, and it follows directly from how many were made. Because it has been produced in enormous numbers for forty years, it is on the syllabus at every watchmaking school, its spare parts list is public, and independents own the tooling. There is no chronograph in the world a general watchmaker is more likely to be able to fix.

Expect a full chronograph service to cost meaningfully more than a three-hand automatic: indicatively $600 to $1,200 at a competent independent, and $1,200 to $2,600 at a brand service center, with complicated or modular variants higher. Those are indicative US figures before sales tax, they vary with the shop's labor rate and with parts availability, and a watch sent to another country for service picks up shipping and local tax on top; what a watch service costs and servicing and care set out the ranges and the intervals. Replacement is not the economical option here the way it is on a cheap three-hander: a 7750 is worth repairing.

Known weaknesses

The thickness and the rotor behavior are the two you will notice daily, and neither is fixable. Beyond those: the pushers are stiffer than a column wheel's, and on a poorly adjusted example the start can feel notchy. The chronograph seconds hand can show a small jump on starting, a normal characteristic of the coupling rather than a fault. The day and date change slowly across a period either side of midnight, so both quicksets must be kept away from that window, which is exactly the situation described in when it is unsafe to change the date.

The adjustments that keep the chronograph crisp, the eccentrics governing the coupling depth and the minute counter jumper, drift over time and after a poor service. A 7750 that stutters, mis-jumps its minute counter or has a wandering chronograph seconds hand is almost always out of adjustment rather than broken.

The alternatives, and who it is for

Sellita's SW500 family is built to the same architecture and is the obvious current substitute, on the same logic that makes the SW200-1 a substitute for the 2824-2. Modular chronographs on a 2892-A2 or Sellita SW300-1 base are thinner but carry more service risk in the module. In-house chronographs from the large groups usually offer a vertical clutch, a column wheel or a longer reserve, at a price and with parts restrictions worth checking before you buy; see in-house versus third-party movements.

Buy a 7750 chronograph if you want a mechanical chronograph you will actually use and keep, and if a thick watch does not bother you. Avoid it if you have small wrists, want something that slides under a shirt cuff, or care most about the feel of the pushers. If you already own one, the highest-value thing you can do is stop leaving the chronograph running.

Common follow-up questions

Is a column wheel chronograph better than the 7750?

Better to operate, not better to own. A column wheel gives a lighter, crisper pusher because it distributes the switching load differently. A cam does the same job with fewer, sturdier parts and adjusts on eccentrics, so it is cheaper to build and quicker to service. If you want the feel, pay for it knowingly. If you want a chronograph that runs for decades on ordinary maintenance, the cam is not a compromise.

Why does the rotor wobble and click?

Because the 7750 winds in one direction only. Its automatic work has a single reversing wheel, so rotation the other way does no winding and the rotor turns with almost nothing resisting it. Combined with a heavy rotor on a large movement, that produces the sensation owners describe as a wobble or a shudder on a quick wrist movement. It is the design, not a fault.

Should I leave the chronograph running?

No, as a habit. Everything the chronograph drives is extra load on the same barrel, so amplitude and power reserve drop while it runs, and the coupling parts wear. Running it for a few hours does no harm. Running it permanently for years shortens the interval to the next service and costs you rate in the meantime.

Can any watchmaker service a 7750?

Almost any competent one, which is the caliber's biggest practical advantage. It is on the syllabus at watchmaking schools, the adjustments are made with accessible eccentrics rather than by refitting parts, and the spare parts list has been public for decades. Expect a chronograph service to cost considerably more than a three-hand automatic, because there are far more parts to clean, oil and set.
