The verdict

The Alpinist is a 39.5 mm steel automatic with an internal compass bezel, cathedral hands, sapphire and a 20 bar water resistance marking, running Seiko's 6R35 with an approximately 70 hour reserve. It is very good at being a rugged watch that still looks dressed. Buy something else if you need certified accuracy, a thin case, or a genuine ISO 6425 diver.

The Alpinist is Seiko's mountain watch, descended from the 1959 Laurel Alpinist that the company describes as its first sports watch. The modern version is a steel automatic with an unusual combination: a compass scale printed on a ring under the crystal, turned by a second crown, and a dial dressed with cathedral hands and applied gold-colored numerals. It reads as a field watch from a distance and as something more decorative up close.

This page describes the generation launched in 2020, and specifically the SPB121J1 and SPB123J1, both of which came on calfskin. The SPB121 has a green dial on a brown strap; the SPB123 has a cream dial on an olive strap. Everything mechanical is shared between them. That generation has since been replaced in Seiko's catalog, so this is a page about a watch you will mostly find used, and about the older SARB017 that people still search for by name.

The compass ring, and how it is actually used

The inner ring carries a 360 degree scale and the eight compass points. It is not a magnetic compass and it does not point anywhere by itself. It is a holder for a sun-and-hour-hand calculation, and Seiko sets out the method in the manual for this caliber family.

  1. Hold the watch flat, dial level.
  2. In the northern hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun. Then turn the ring with the crown at 2 o'clock so that S sits halfway along the arc between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock marker.
  3. In the southern hemisphere, point the 12 o'clock marker at the sun instead, and set N to that same midpoint.
  4. The other marks on the ring now indicate their directions.

What the ring is genuinely good for is more mundane: it is a scale you can park against a reference point, to mark a bearing back to a trailhead or the minute you put something on to cook.

How it wears

The numbers that matter are 39.5 mm across, 46.4 mm from lug tip to lug tip and 13.2 mm thick. The lug to lug figure is the forgiving one. Forty-six and a half millimeters is short for a case of this diameter, so the Alpinist sits inside a 16 cm (6.3 in) wrist comfortably and does not overhang a 15 cm (5.9 in) one.

The thickness is where the compromises show. At 13.2 mm on a 39.5 mm case the proportions are chunky, and the crystal and the compass ring both take their share of that height. The second crown at 2 o'clock is the other thing to try before buying. It sits where the back of your hand meets your wrist, and on some people it presses.

The 6R35, and living with it

The 6R35 is Seiko's mid-range automatic, and the specification that changed the Alpinist is the reserve. Seiko publishes approximately 70 hours from a full wind against the more than approximately 50 hours it publishes for the older 6R15. In practice that is the difference between a watch that is dead on Monday morning and one that is still running. Our page on the 6R35 covers the caliber in detail.

It hand winds and it hacks. Seiko's instructions confirm both: turn the crown clockwise in the normal position to wind, and the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to the second click. Set the date at the first click, and not between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., because the change mechanism is engaged in that window.

On accuracy, Seiko publishes +25 to -15 seconds per day and describes it as a factory adjustment, not a certification. That is a 40 second wide band. Many examples do far better and some sit near the edge of it, and neither outcome is a fault. The SARB017, and why people still look for it

The SARB017 was the Japan-market Alpinist that the SPB generation replaced. Seiko's international site no longer carries a specification page for it, so treat any figure you read about it as unverified against the manufacturer. What is not in dispute is the direction of the changes.

The size is the crux. The SARB017 is a 38 mm watch and its replacement is not, and for a large group of buyers that single fact outweighs the 20 extra hours of reserve. Add a stopped supply and a name that keeps circulating, and the result is a discontinued watch trading above its old retail price. What is wrong with it

The magnifier over the date divides people, and it is not optional. It sits on a symmetric dial and breaks it. The anti-reflective coating is on the inner surface of the crystal only, so the outer face throws reflections a two-sided coating would not. At 13.2 mm the case is thick for its diameter. The rate specification is wide and uncertified, which is the honest reason this watch costs a third of what a certified Swiss automatic costs.

The compass ring is a genuine function but a conditional one, and it adds height, a second crown and a second seal to the case. The lume is on the hands and indexes only. And the stock calfskin strap is the first thing most owners replace.

What it costs

All figures are indicative US dollars, quoted before sales tax, and they move with market, distribution and the used market. Buying outside the United States, the local price moves with tax, import duty and distribution. For reference, Seiko's current Alpinist references are listed on its United States site at $900 to $995 for the three-hand models and $1,150 for the GMT versions, which is where the family sits new today. The SPB121 and SPB123 listed at about $800 while they were current.

Used SPB121 and SPB123 examples in good condition commonly trade somewhere around $500 to $750, with full set examples at the top of that. A used SARB017 in honest condition commonly asks more than that, roughly $700 to $1,100 depending on condition and whether it comes with its box, which is well above what it sold for new. Both bands move, and neither is a valuation.

Over ten years, the running cost is one or possibly two overhauls plus a strap or two. Put your own numbers into the cost of ownership calculator before deciding that a used Alpinist is cheaper than a new one, because the service due date travels with the watch.

The alternatives

If you want the 6R35 and the 70 hour reserve without the compass ring or the magnifier, the rest of the Prospex Land family gives you the same movement in plainer cases. If you want more water resistance and a real timing bezel, the Prospex Turtle is the Seiko that actually meets the dive standard. If it is the field watch look you are after and you want something thinner and cheaper, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical is hand wound, flatter and far easier to live with under a cuff.

Buy an Alpinist if you want one watch that can go up a hill and into an office, and you like the dial enough to forgive the cyclops. Buy the SARB017 only if 38 mm is the point, and go in knowing you are paying a scarcity premium for an older movement. Buy something else if you need a certified rate, a slim case, or a watch you can take scuba diving.

Common follow-up questions

Is the Alpinist compass any use, or is it decoration?

It works, within limits. Seiko's instructions are explicit: in the northern hemisphere you level the dial, point the hour hand at the sun, and set S on the ring halfway between the hour hand and the 12 marker. In the southern hemisphere you point the 12 marker at the sun and set N to the same midpoint. Seiko also warns that near the tropics the method can fail at certain times of year. It needs sun and gives you a rough bearing, not a heading.

Can I swim or dive with a 20 bar Alpinist?

Swimming, yes. Seiko's own manual describes a 10 or 20 bar marking as suitable for diving not using an air cylinder, which means snorkeling and free diving rather than scuba. The Alpinist has a screw-down crown and a screwed case back, but it is not marked DIVER'S and does not meet ISO 6425, so it lacks the timing bezel and the extra testing a real dive watch carries. Have the seals checked every few years.

Why does a discontinued SARB017 cost more than it did new?

Because supply stopped and demand did not. The SARB017 was a Japan-market reference at a modest price, it was widely recommended, and when it left the catalog the only source became the used market. Its 38 mm case is also smaller than the 39.5 mm replacement, which suits a large group of buyers. That combination reliably pushes a discontinued watch above its old list price, and it has.

How accurate should mine be?

Seiko publishes +25 to -15 seconds per day for the 6R35, measured worn on the wrist between 5 and 35 degrees Celsius (41 to 95 Fahrenheit). That is a wide band and it is a factory adjustment rather than a chronometer certification. In practice many examples settle in single figures, but there is no promise of that. Measure yours over a week in the positions you actually use, not overnight on a bedside table.
